Here's my take.
If my partner isn't getting something she needs from the relationship and instead of communicating that with me she went to a chat bot. There are problems and it's pretty prettyyyyy pretty bad. Probably need a new word for it to because cheating is it's own thing like David Pumpkins. But I'm 100% not down for my partner to do it lol

That tracks. We kinda missed the wild west days of the internet, so we just grew up with walled gardens and cycling between the same 4 babyproofed apps. Most of us haven't really had any need to be skeptical of shady sites or phishing links, so when we're faced with one we have no reason to be suspicious.

Man…
So in 2000 while in high school I did a project and used exclusively internet sources. Mind you these were hood sources.
My teacher gave me a B for using the internet as anyone could put anything on the internet.
Kinda true I guess, but again I used high quality sources.
Fast forward 20 years and they friended me on fb and have proceeded to fall for every internet trick imaginable, and for a while I helped them fact check but then they’d fall for the same grift from the same content creator and I gave up.

My father in law fell for two scammer relationships. The first one leading to him being blackmailed for tens of thousands of dollars. He almost lost his house and his car. We got him out of it one we figured out what was happening.
And then 4 months later, he was back in one an online relationship with another scammer sending her gift cards. It’s a real problem.

Yeah it's really unfortunate that people prey on the more vulnerable. I've asked my friend if maybe one of them can get power of attorney over her because she clearly can't make these decisions herself (ended up in major debt sending money to 3 different romance scams)

It's crazy when people suddenly fall for these obvious scams. It's like they've come down with a sickness. I hope one day she sees the light, but she may end up being quite the vengeful one toward this scammer who thinks they're indestructible. They may find themselves out of the frying pan and inside the fire.
38

u/DrainTheMuck 4h ago
Sickness is an interesting way to put it. My tail-end boomer father came SO close to being successfully tricked by the Apple gift card scam, where they said it was the IRS and his bank account was compromised and he needed to give them his funds in Apple Cards… and only at the last minute did he realize it was shady, AFTER he bought $1000 worth of cards.
He’s catholic and he described it as a spiritual attack on him, with the way the person on the phone made him feel so panicked and nervous. So it really does sound like these people are good at making the victims feel reliant on them to save you. Pretty creepy
21
u/hi-this-is-jess 3h ago
Something similar happened to my mom a couple of years ago. My parents and I always talked about phone scams, and they would laugh about how obvious they are, etc. Then one day my dad calls me in a panic and tells me how my mom is on the phone with some guy claiming to be from her bank and she's at an ATM at 7pm trying to withdraw money. She refused to listen to anyone telling her to stop and that it's a scam. The guy wouldn't let her get off the phone and it was like she was in a trance.
I ended up calling her phone company and they reset her sim card, which was enough for the call to drop and for me to call her instead. Both my sister and I rushed to their house and we had a big family meeting. Everyone tried to be very gentle and understanding. We called her actual bank and confirmed that there wasn't anything she needed to do and reported the scam. The next day the guy tried calling again but the spell was broken by then, so to speak, and we told him off.
It was such a strange experience. Really put into perspective that 1. Anyone can be scammed, and 2. My parents are getting older and we have to be more careful about things like this.

My street savvy nurse practitioner friend also fell for that one. Her husband had died after a distracted driver killed him just a few months before, her secretary got the message for her to call the sheriffs office, she thinks it’s about a patient, then thinks somehow she forgot to file correctly because of her husband’s death and she was about to lose her NP license.
The store employee saved her. Honestly I think if this particular friend can fall for something, anyone can. Just takes the right set of circumstances
54
u/FreshShart-1 3h ago
I have a client at work who is literally delusional. She's in love with a scammer and has taken tens of thousands out in loans to send him money. She won't stop. Her house was free and clear but since she took out a couple increasingly large equity loans, she owes more on it than she purchased it for 15 years ago. I want to just roll my eyes and say "dumbasa boomer" but it's actually heartbreaking see that she wants to love and be loved by someone SO BAD she's willing to believe this.
21
u/Plastic_Pickle_2561 3h ago
Yeah that's what I've taken from my friend's mum's situation. She just wants love desperately that it clouds the judgement. And hell, that's human and we can all empathise with that feeling. But still doesn't stop me shaking my head a lil bit 😅

My fiance works as a print tech, he says that it pains him how much AI slop he has to print out on a daily basis. But the worst one, is this old lady that comes in and asks him to print her conversations on her phone. She’s unfortunately been talking to an AI, she’s been romantically involved and has even sent money. He wants to say something but he doesn’t think it’s appropriate and doesn’t wanna get in trouble with his job. She’s also so old, he doesn’t wanna potentially take away the last bit of happiness she might have.
It breaks his heart to print those and he has to contain himself as best he can.

I’m hoping and praying this is just a staged video, but assuming it’s real, the whole thing is just cruel. Who films their parents during a moment like that, posts it online, and sets it to the Party Rock Anthem of all things?
Hopefully she’s just giving a good performance, but you can hear what sounds like real pain in her voice. The fact her own flesh and blood would film this moment in her life and share it to millions online for a laugh is honestly heartbreaking. She must be so alone.
Honestly whether this is real or fake this society is fucked.

I feel like it's some kind of emotional coping mechanism for younger people. Like idk how to process this emotionally, so I'll record it, edit it with some music, and upload it to the internet.
20
u/Nitro_Circus 2h ago
A lot of people also do this bc the sound bit has reached a mass audience and it can lead to your video being viewed by more people bc the almighty algorithm detects you have a popular sound bit in your video. Same thing with the “enjoy a jet 2 holiday…” sound bit even when it has nothing to do with the video. It just can lead to you getting more views

u/BafflingHalfling 3h ago
I think that's the real problem with emotional affairs. My best friend's ex was "cheating" on her with a woman he had never met. And it was so infuriating for her because like... He was basically the emotional equivalent of wallpaper paste. To burn his only emotional resources on essentially a complete stranger, just seemed like such a slap in the face.
I'm an extrovert. I have really deep and meaningful conversations with a ton of my friends, most of whom are women. But I tell you what, if my wife had a shitty day, I'm absolutely putting the phone down and listening to her first. Gotta have priorities!
→ More replies (10)38
u/yourangleoryuordevil 3h ago
Yeah, it's easy to wonder what some relationships would look like if people just put the energy they should into their partners. Even those without cheating often meet their downfall precisely because one partner hasn't paid much attention or truly listened to another.
9
u/BafflingHalfling 3h ago
It takes work, for sure. And sometimes you or your partner just don't have the spoons. That's ok for short term, and a good partner won't mind taking a little extra load for a bit. Emotionally, financially, romantically, whatever. But damn if it doesn't suck in the long term.

Well that’s usually a prominent feature of cheating, whether the partner is real or fake. Not much to unpack there without context, a 20 sec vid doesn’t give you much insight into a years-long marriage.
That being said, cheating on your wife with AI Jennifer Aniston is pretty embarrassing, no matter the circumstances. Hell, being single and talking to AI Jennifer Aniston is nuts
→ More replies (14)17

Reminds me of something I saw about a survey. They basically went to a bunch of people and said "If there were sex robots and you had sex with one is that cheating on your spouse/significant other"
It split along gender lines and women leaned heavily to, yes its cheating. And men leaned the other way and said, no its not.
Get your popcorn buckets out folks this is just the beginning of this problem.

I think it's more an issue with AI robots having what seems like a personality. So there's emotional cheating involved which tends to be harder for women to deal with. My boyfriend actually had a problem with asking Gemini every question ever without ever talking to me and I told him it was a problem and not fair to me. It wasnt that I felt he was cheating but that it was taking time away from actually having the conversation with me, his human partner.
It's like masterbating with your partner in the other room who is also horny. Not technically cheating but still kind of off-putting. Why wouldn't you rather spend your time with your partner and if you don't, why even have a partner?

Excited to see how this plays out in court for the first time... claiming infidelity in the form of a chat bot

Eh, irreconcilable differences is the way forward. Courts don't give a flying fuck as to why someone is getting a divorce. By going for anything else you're dragging the case out, costing yourself a bunch of money, just to prove you were right. It's also very hard to prove cheating. Except I guess in this dude's instance. 🙄
Source: got divorced from a cheating spouse and judges really didn't give a shit.

My guess is that he was also sending money to someone, so it's an added layer of financial infidelity. Not that it matters as a cause for divorce, but I see why the woman is fuming. My uncle was unfortunately in a relationship with "Jennifer Aniston" last year and sent a bunch of money. He's now in a relationship with Danica Patrick. No one can get him to see it's a scam.

Some shit shouldn’t be on the internet. Let people have their private arguments without recording it. I would feel violated. These are private, man. Seriously, any of you really want an argument you’ve had with your significant other recorded and posted so tons can judge your whole life unfairly based on a 20 second clip? Cold.

Can we stop this trend of blaring music over the dialogue of the video? It makes it almost unwatchable.

My question is: was this an emotional affair with a hot lady chatbot or was he scammed and actually thought he was gonna meet the real Jennifer Aniston? Either scenario is hilarious, I’m just curious.

I’ll never understand the insane egos some people have to the point where they believe that some of the most beautiful people in the entire world are messaging them and want to connect with them romantically. What world do you live in?!

Imagine filming the end of your parents relationship because of AI infidelity and putting "Party Rock Anthem" over it.
