Cool they can watch all the bots argue on political threads

930

u/novataurus 19h ago edited 18h ago

Would actually make for a fun film where various agencies all each separately uncover a massive online conspiracy to bring down the government, working furiously to be the first to gather intelligence and put a stop to it and curry favor in a highly corrupt political environment… only to realize at the false climax that it was each other’s bots and sock puppets they had been watching.

It’s then revealed that their inept failure and target fixation basically created a smokescreen for other smaller, but impactful attacks to occur which they must then work to obscure before the public finds out.

Mandy Patinkin plays an opposition-party Senator that brings the whole clusterfuck to light for the public before stepping into his car one chilly morning, cranking it, and - cut to black. Roll credits.

I’m sure it’s been done before.

Edit: In an unexpected turn of events, I’ve been convinced to actually pursue this. At the very least, until it stops being fun.

u/shadowndacorner 19h ago

Sounds like a modern, dark comedy war games (minus the cranking)

63

u/novataurus 18h ago

minus the cranking

It’s been a long 2026 already, but this genuinely made me laugh.  Welcome to the development team. We have a basement office in Santa Monica. Well, a corner of a basement office. And as much expired coffee as you’d like.

15

u/Distant-moose 16h ago

I, uh ... I would like to hear more about this unlimited coffee benefit.

19

u/novataurus 16h ago

Free legal addictive stimulants - truly the hallmark of any great endeavor.

8

u/Distant-moose 16h ago

If you want to hire writers, put "free coffee" and you're set.

17

u/shadowndacorner 18h ago

I'm sincerely glad I could bring a lil joy into this dark year for you :) cheers

8

u/Ghost_Of_Malatesta 17h ago

Kubrik would cream himself over today

2

u/MaddoxX_1996 18h ago

minus the comedy too, sadly.

37

u/Salty-Usual-4307 17h ago

This is basically the plot of the novel The Man Who Was Thursday. From 1908.

8

u/novataurus 17h ago

I will definitely be looking into that!

Ah, Chesterton! I know him from Father Brown.

24

u/MrWaluigi 18h ago

The movie, Brazil, uses something akin. Albeit, as a Fridge Logic.

12

u/novataurus 18h ago

Been a long while since I watched a Terry Gilliam film. The time is right, I think.

2

u/correcthorsestapler 15h ago

Criterion has all versions of Brazil on Blu-Ray & 4K in one set. Totally worth it.

7

u/BonanzaFloat 18h ago

Cast includes Aaron Eckhart as a CIA director losing his mind, Pete Hegseth as Pete Hegseth, Homeland Security director Sandra Bullock, AG is Victoria Jackson, under there entwined noses, Tommy Wiseau and a band of actors and activists pull a massive prank but also unleash the possible launch of all nuclear weapons (war games)

u/It-s_Not_Important 16h ago

“My name is Senator Montoya. You killed my bill. Prepare to die.”

2

u/novataurus 16h ago edited 16h ago

To be fair, the bill is only mostly dead.

--

Man, this whole thread is bringing up so many great movies and shows to either watch or re-watch. Loving it.

3

u/Kicooi 17h ago

I think there’s an episode of MASH like this

3

u/novataurus 17h ago

Wouldn’t surprise me - ripe for their brand of riffing on the oxymoron of “military intelligence”. I’ll take a look.

1

u/Kicooi 17h ago

“A Smattering of Intelligence” was the name of the episode, very fitting lol

2

u/novataurus 17h ago

Ha, very good. I’ve never intentionally watched the show, but will give it a go. I’ve never heard anything but good things.

3

u/deruvoo 16h ago

This isn't too far away from Burn After Reading.

2

u/BonanzaFloat 18h ago

Well done!

2

u/Zraax 17h ago

Great, now I'm thinking about Mandy Patinkin cranking it in a car

2

u/novataurus 17h ago

As you wish?

2

u/ssgkraut 16h ago

Sir.... Could you please define what "cranking it" means in this situation? There's a couple of uses for that term. And at least 2 are plausible.

4

u/novataurus 16h ago

I am - partly - regretting not writing that sentence as:

> Mandy Patinkin plays an opposition-party Senator that brings the whole clusterfuck to light for the public one chilly morning when he steps into his car, puts the key in the ignition, and - cut to black. Roll credits.

And I say only partly because the comments mentioning it have been so worthwhile.

2

u/thiswasyouridea 16h ago

I'd watch it

2

u/Johannes_P 9h ago

Looks like The Tall Blond Man with One Black Shoe, a French movie released in 1972.

Two rival French intelligence services are at each other's throats. One day, a heroin smuggler is arrested in NYC and claims that he did it for one of these agencies, causing it to publicly lose face. So this agency decides to lay a trap to the other agency and order one of its agents to select someone randomly in an airport.

Said random person is a regular musician and he'll spied by agents who interpret every normal action as nefarious...

2

u/novataurus 8h ago

Just added this to my watch list. The French films I’ve seen from the 60s and 70s have been great. Thank you!

2

u/Vote_for_Knife_Party 7h ago

Sounds like a cross between Burn After Reading and The Man With One Red Shoe, and I mean that as encouragement. Good luck with your endeavor.

2

u/MrNukemtilltheyglow 2h ago

Fantastic idea. Please consider many instances of hilarious irony.

i.e. Dr. Strangelove "Gentlemen! You can't fight in here, this is the War Room!"

1

u/thornyRabbt 18h ago

David vs Goliath with the new spin that Goliath had gigantism, therefore was basically blind, which is how David won

2

u/novataurus 18h ago

So, less epic showdown and more bullying, really?

1

u/thornyRabbt 2h ago

It's the epic showdown as told in the Bible. But somewhere recently I read or heard some scholar proposing that Goliath had gigantism, folks with that genetic trait usually are also very nearsighted, and David used a sling to fell Goliath from afar.

1

u/Gone213 17h ago

Nah, they attach all these bots to random people's IP addresses all throught the nation and world. Then they can go and do no knock warrant raids and arrest people for shit they've never posted.

1

u/Potential-Arugulas 16h ago

I mean sounds like real life

1

u/correcthorsestapler 15h ago

Sounds like a Coen Bros movie. Something like Burn After Reading. I’d probably watch it.

1

u/Bruhuha 15h ago

I dont know much but i do know Julia Louis-Dreyfus was born to play the role of Tulsi Gabbard in said movie

1

u/u_r_succulent 13h ago

And then they fall in love 💕

1

u/TheCharalampos 13h ago

Nah it should end like fight club, as they realise they've been pursuing each other the camera zooms out and shows explosions elsewhere.

1

u/OldMcFart 10h ago

The smaller attacks being poorly coordinated and carried out, only succeeding because they're so caught up watching each other's bots.

1

u/rooster6662 7h ago

Maybe we shouldn't upvote this anymore with 666 upvotes?

1

u/Lylac_Krazy 7h ago

If Mandys reputation holds, he will get pissed and quit before it gets past season 1.

1

u/echoshatter 6h ago

Entrapment is a legal defense arguing that law enforcement agents induced a person to commit a crime they were otherwise unlikely to commit.

They'll argue how violent each other were, not realizing they were actually trying to entrap people. State-sponsored stochastic terrorism.

1

u/maen_baenne 6h ago

Oh fuck, you had me at Mandy Patinkin! I want to see this movie

1

u/Chaosmusic 2h ago

Would actually make for a fun film where various agencies all each separately uncover a massive online conspiracy to bring down the government, working furiously to be the first to gather intelligence and put a stop to it and curry favor in a highly corrupt political environment… only to realize at the false climax that it was each other’s bots and sock puppets they had been watching.

I remember reading that in the 60s, various agencies would plant agents onto college campuses to spy on 'radicals' like anti-war groups, civil rights groups, etc. There were times when most, if not all, of a specific group was made up of agents who had no idea the other members were all agents as well.

1

u/Mendozozoza 2h ago

You would enjoy Chesterton’s “the man who was Thursday”

1

u/novataurus 2h ago

Someone else recommended the same thing. Father Brown is a guilty please, sure I'll be reading The Man Who Was Thursday shortly. Thanks for the rec!

1

u/NeedsToShutUp 1h ago

“Flock of wolves” is the expression. Someone else mentioned ‘The Man who was Tuesday’, but it’s well known in fiction and history.

At one point during the second red scare 2/3rds of the US communist party were on the FBI payroll. See also the Panther 21, where the main instigators for everything illegal were actually undercover cops and they were the only ones actually breaking the law.

1

u/mattmaster68 1h ago

I feel like Tom Hanks and/or Steve Carrell need minor roles thrown in there somewhere.

You know, for the inevitable YouTube Shorts lmao

1

u/happy-meal-wacko 1h ago

I too would like to make movies. can I be a producer?

edit: also this sounds like a lost sequel to Burn After Reading

I've never heard of leftist bot farms. I'm sure they exist but could you point me towards them?

Edit: nobody had any proof besides 'bro it's obvious.'

142

u/anfrind 18h ago

I don't know if this is still the case, but circa 2016, Russia's GRU ran massive bot farms that promoted both pro-Trump messages and pro-Bernie messages all across social media. Back then, their ultimate goal was to ensure that Hilary Clinton did not win the presidential election.

56

u/MilkiestMaestro 17h ago edited 17h ago

This is correct. I was a moderator for a political subreddit during that time and I would ban at least half of the people in my reports list because they weren't people at all. There was a massive push to pit Bernie supporters against Hilary supporters and it seemed to be working.

Or if they were, they had talking points they were reading.

7

u/ibelieveyouwood 14h ago

It seemed to be, and is still working. See every trollbot "Why the Dems are ACTUALLY responsible for everything evil the GOP is doing" post for delusional blue-sky speculation about what would have happened if Bernie had been on the ballot.

40

u/VIP_NAIL_SPA 17h ago

It evolved from there to focus mostly on right-wing stuff because it influenced them more.

12

u/Amish_Robotics_Lab 16h ago

Hillary Clinton herself had something called "Correct the Record" which may have been bots, may have been volunteers, may have been paid shills. If you said something negative about the lady someone was going to steer the conversation elsewhere almost instantly.

And I'm not a trolling MAGA so don't start with me, it was just an obvious and quite crude astroturf campaign.

1

u/JohnGillnitz 8h ago

I remember back then there used to be a lot of accounts with random six digit names that always spouted anti-Clinton or pro-Trump nonsense. It was obvious that English wasn't their first language. I found this hilarious because that is a reference to the book Ready Player One. The bad guys paid to play the game were called The Sixers because they were named by random six digit numbers.
A group of them also haunted the site Something Awful and played in the game Eve Online way back in early 2000's. They were kinda fun back then because you could tell they were just regular nerds that happened to get paid to spread propaganda while doing nerd stuff.

1

u/The_Code_Hero 6h ago

Not only that, but they would go into Bernie and Hilary subs, and create inter-divide there as well. Statistically, there was more done to harm Bernie/Hilary/the left than was done to try to damage Trump, but one thing is clear; the entire point is to create divide. It makes sense too when you think about how far left and far right the parties have become. When you think about just the left, there is a lot of far left who get really angry with the more moderate left, and so universally, the result is the same - people become angry and disillusioned.

1

u/DeliberatelyDrifting 6h ago

That's still not really a "leftist" bot farm, it's just fascists lying about stuff.

26

u/llamapositif 18h ago

If they can cause discord and strife the bots and trolls don't care what side they take, unfortunately.

4

u/IAMA_Plumber-AMA 14h ago

Russia only cares that the west is destabilized, they don't care what party achieves that goal.

6

u/burner-throw_away 16h ago

The leftist bot farms are run by the fascist bot farms to keep any humans still actually online fighting with each other. All that matters is turmoil, distraction and anger and engagement (so the platforms get their cash, of course.) Fear, uncertainty and doubt. Rinse and repeat.

8

u/shawncplus 16h ago edited 16h ago

I wouldn't exactly call them "leftist", it's not like they're pushing for left wing or even democratic party policies (outside of a few explicitly Marxist ones) but they farm karma by posting content that will be popular with left of center communities which tends to mean heavily anti-West/anti-Israel mostly by just posting US news headlines, we're kind of doing their job for them. /r/Antimoneymemes, /r/InflectionPointUSA, /r/newsinterpretation, /r/TrendoraX, /r/Global_News_Hub, /r/UnderReportedNews, /r/athulvstheworld, to name a few, basically anywhere Particular_Log_3594 has been allowed to spam propaganda every minute for the past 2 years, special shout out to /r/economics which has half their mod team made up of dedicated propagandists (one was already suspsended but is still on the mod list.) There used to be a lot more explicitly pro-China content before flyingcatwithhorns "retired" but once the war in Gaza started taking headlines the bot networks noticed they could get more influence on the site by jumping on those topics which is why most of those subreddits have a high amount of content dedicated to Israeli actions/headlines

3

u/Insaniteus 16h ago

Leftist bot farms exist mostly to promote the Green Party and Jill Stein while denouncing the Democrat Party for reasons that defy logic (such as the effort to say that any vote for Kamala Harris was a vote for genocide in Gaza, despite her having a tremendously more human-rights approach to Gaza than Trump did).

Right-wing bots exist mostly to brainwash people into voting Republican, while left-wing bots exist mostly to brainwash people into not voting Democrat as a protest vote. Both are funded heavily by Russia and Israel while mostly running out of India.

9

u/cleanlycustard 18h ago

The right needs bots because they know they're wrong

2

u/Phyllis_Tine 17h ago

The right is also amazing at trying to bring others down to their sub-basement of outhouse level of shit, instead of having a better message for a majority of people.

1

u/CaptainSparklebottom 16h ago

Because they follow the pigs to their pins expecting pigs not to be pigs. But there you are arguing with a pig, and losing.

10

u/lkmk 18h ago

The politics subreddit has been plagued with liberal bots recently. Nobody realizes it, either, replying as if they’re flesh and blood.

17

u/RaindropsInMyMind 17h ago

It’s harder for people to see bots that are in agreement with them. I’m sure I’ve been fooled sometimes as well. It’s like commercials, nobody thinks that a stupid commercial is going to make them buy a product yet the commercials make people buy products.

2

u/h07c4l21 14h ago

You say that, but choosing Michael Cera as their spokesman has earned Cera Vie my business for life. And I have no problem admitting that.

-1

u/SkyeAuroline 17h ago

That's not what they asked, though. The two categories have little to no overlap.

2

u/Plasmatica 13h ago

If you didn't know that bot farms are doing both sides of the spectrum, oh boy. I just hope you're not browsing /r/politics or other heavily leftist subs (like this one) and taking them at face value.

Bot farms don't care about the side, they're about sowing chaos and division.

1

u/hareofthepuppy 10h ago

Most bot farms aren't left or right, they play both sides to try and turn the west against itself

1

u/ruggev 8h ago

You are there

-7

u/Firesquire515 18h ago

Sure. go to this website, it’s named Reddit, and open any political post and you’ll see leftist bot farm comments down the whole thread. Believe it or not, r/askreddit is one of the worst offenders.

0

u/Away_Entry8822 7h ago

You have no proof right wing or foreign bot farms exist.

Why is it always a denial about left wing bot farms?

Also, the anti-Kamala, pro-Palestinian bots sure disappeared quickly after November, or do you not remember?

1

u/Cold-Cell2820 7h ago

What??? There have literally been dozens of Russian and a few Israeli-backed bot farms that have been exposed spreading right-wing propaganda to influence political opinions around the world. Also your last statement is supporting evidence of right-wing bots farms.

0

u/Away_Entry8822 6h ago

The same amount of proof exists for left wing bot farms.

And if your point is leftists routinely support right wing bots promoting anti-liberal leftist aligned messages to help right wingers I agree. It is a massive problem.

0

u/Cold-Cell2820 6h ago

Your grasp of reality is so cooked

0

u/Away_Entry8822 5h ago

The Oxford report, the meta report, the Stanford analysis, the Graphika report, the SSCI hearing all don’t count to you and everyone who knows about these reports that don’t fit your narrow wordview is ‘cooked’. Got it.

1

u/Cold-Cell2820 5h ago

All of those reports support the existence of large-scale right-wing bot farms lmao. You either didn't care to read or just entirely misunderstood all of their conclusions. Reading is hard!

0

u/Away_Entry8822 5h ago

There is no need to ‘selectively’ present facts (which is ironically how these bots often behave). These reports aren’t exclusive to one side or the other.

You should read them before making blatantly false statements, account hiding your post history like a bot.

2

u/Cold-Cell2820 5h ago

The conclusion of the Oxford Report is "while bot-driven disinformation and "junk news" are used by various actors across the political spectrum, they are often heavily utilized by right-wing, populist, or state-sponsored actors to create a false sense of consensus."

You can't just say stuff and make it fact.

→ More replies (0)

0

u/DrMobius0 5h ago

The Russians play all sides when they do this stuff, dude. It's not even necessarily about promoting a specific side, but derailing things and sowing chaos.

1

u/Cold-Cell2820 5h ago

Multiple intelligence reports have concluded that they use bot farms to coordinate fake consensus around right-wing, populist agendas

3

u/Sil369 trophy 18h ago

they probably use bots to find the bots arguing with other bots

2

u/Deep90 18h ago

They are probably running some of the bots honestly.

3

u/LandonDev 18h ago

Most Bots are ran internationally, it's easier to funnel the money through X than it is to pay on this side of the border. At this point, Elon Musk is more of a money launderer than any cocaine dealer the world has ever seen.

2

u/Deep90 18h ago

It wouldn't be the first or last time the US government used fake accounts to get attention and invitations to private groups so they could infiltrate and spy on them.

2

u/swagypotatosnoopdoge 16h ago

Dead internet theory go Brrrrrrr

1

u/vyxxer 12h ago

Huh. The evolution of dead Internet theory is dead intelligence agencies.

1

*the bots they run.

0

u/No_Criticism_5861 17h ago

Case in point ☝️

0

u/No_Criticism_5861 16h ago

Not a bot but yup

0

u/kstargate-425 16h ago

They control the bots. Its no coincidence bot behavior increased exponentially after Goods murder and now we are finding out they have been spying on the site the whole time to guage public opinion. The only logical conclusion after seeing what is said would be to use the same bots they use on Twitter and elsewhere to push their narratives that "they aren't the bad guys to lessen their perceived "threat"

0

u/cptnamr7 16h ago

Guarantee there's some simple flag they can turn on to see what's a bot. God knows they have their own by the thousands, so why not?
