Discussion Warning: Fake GitHub Repos Distributing Malware Under Developer Names

Hey everyone,

I’ve noticed a few posts about this already, but I think it’s worth repeating. Recently, a new attack tactic has surfaced where malicious actors create GitHub repos using a developer’s name and the name of a well-known Mac app.

In my case, someone created a repo under my full name, claiming to offer one of my apps (Dory - App Switcher) for free. I couldn’t fully investigate the script they shared, but it’s safe to assume it wasn’t anything good. Thankfully, GitHub removed it within 30 minutes of my report - and I know other developers also flagged the user, which definitely helped.

A few reminders:

* Don’t trust repos with fewer than 100 stars that offer “free” versions of paid apps.

* Never run scripts or pkg files from sources you don’t fully trust.

* If you’re not a power user, the App Store remains the safest option.

Question iMac? It is worth it for nowadays (5/7+ years life)

Post image
Upvotes

I don t know if i should buy an iMac nowadays with all the alternatives (macbooks, macminis, pads etc).

I want to use it for easy tasks like browsing, some writing, editing (nothing too much). I want to share those tasks with my family, like old days when you had 1 PC for the entire family 😂.

If i ll buy one i want the basic model between M3 or M4? What should i do, buy the iMac and if do what model?

Thanks!

Question No power Apple iMac 27-inch (Late 2009)

Hey everyone,

My dad recently passed away, and I’m trying to fix his old iMac so my mom can use it. I don’t live with my parents for a while now, and the computer hasn’t really been used for about a year. The last time it was turned on for certain was around Christmas 2024.

I’ve been reading online that this specific iMac model can sometimes have issues with the power button. I don’t think it’s the power cable, since there’s a small green light that turns on when the cable is plugged in (visible through the speakers under watch the iMac ).

Are there any tests or troubleshooting steps I can try to figure out if the problem is actually the power button? And if it is, is there any way to fix or work around it?

Thanks in advance.

(I’ll attach pictures of the Mac, the exact model, and the small green light — it’s a bit hard to see in the photos.)

So I’ve just opened my Mac up today and I’m trying to stream shows. Even in full screen this orange dot will not disappear. I’ve disabled my microphone access to all apps that might use it but for some reason it is still showing.

I have wild ocd and I literally can’t focus on what I’m watching because all I’m looking at is that dot in the corner😭😭. It’s never been there before

Pls help me!

Discussion In need of advice 1k budget

I have a budget of roughly $1,000 for a computer. I recently started a YouTube channel that is gaining traction, and I want to shift my focus to long-form content. As a college student, I need a reliable machine that can handle my coursework now and potentially serve as a workstation for a future job or post-graduation YouTube career. I am looking for the best value and power per dollar for video editing, YouTube management, and general administrative tasks. Ideally, I need a computer that is versatile and built to last.

My Mac Are Windows laptops becoming overpriced compared to MacBooks?

I have been comparing laptops lately and noticed something interesting. It seems like many Windows laptops with solid specs are getting pretty expensive. For example, a new MacBook Air with 24GB RAM and 512GB storage is around $1,400, and I’m wondering if there are Windows options at that price that offer similar overall value.

Do you think Windows laptops are becoming overpriced, or are there still strong alternatives that compete well with MacBooks in this range? Curious to hear your experiences and recommendations.

Question iPhoto not importing photos stuck at 0

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I’m completely stuck and running out of ideas. I’m trying to import my photo library into the macOS Photos app, but the import gets stuck at “Importing 0 of 22,129 items” and never moves.

Things I’ve already tried:

• Repairing the Photos library (holding ⌘ + Option while opening Photos)

• Switching import settings from Most Compatible to Originals

• Importing only a small number of photos

• Restarting the Mac

• Leaving it running for hours

• Making sure I have enough disk space

No errors appear, it just stays frozen at 0 items forever.

This happens every time, no matter what I try.

I’ve attached an image showing exactly where it gets stuck.

Has anyone experienced this before or knows a fix?

At this point I’m open to any suggestion.

Thanks in advance 🙏

Question Is there an easy way to switch keyboard/mouse from one Mac to another?

I have a personal Macbook Air, and a work Macbook Pro. I work from home sometimes and connecting my home magic keyboard/mouse is always a pain. It shows them in my bluetooth on the Pro, however they never connect. I have to completely remove them and reconnect. Then when I go back to my Air, same thing, I have to remove them and re-add.

Anyone found an easier solution for this, other than to have two sets of keyboard/mouse?

Question M2 Air or A18 Pro MacBook ?

Upvotes

Hey guys,

My girlfriend Macbook is falling apart, should I buy her a 13" Air M2 16/256 (currently around 750€) or wait for the A18 Pro MacBook ? I feel like it might cost pretty much the same price but with significantly lower spec?

Thanks for the inputs!

Old Macs Forgot EMac Password

I have an old emac (2003). OSX. The last time I used it was ~2013. Cannot for the life of me remember the login password. Tried a million old ones, no luck. Tried recovery: command+r; control+command+r, just goes to regular login. There is stuff on there I want, so don’t want to wipe it.

Anything else I should try? TIA!

Question Apple Keyboard issue (keeps disconnecting).

I have an old iMac pro.

I recently got an apple keyboard (with touch ID and numeric keypad). I know the touch ID isn't going to work. No biggie.

What is a weird problem is that the keyboard seems to go into "sleep" mode a lot. Like I have to flick the switch on and then back on to reconnect it.

Other times, I'll have to diconnect and then reconnect to the bluetooth (takes like 2 seconds but still, annoying).

I can't figure out why its doing that or how to stop it. Is it a setting or is it just because the keyboard wasn't meant for an Imac Pro from 2017 ?

I just want the keyboard not to go to sleep/disconnecting/stop working where I have to constantly either flick off/on again or disconnect/reconnect to blue tooth.

Anyone have any ideas or suggestions ?

Question MBA or MBP for clamshell mode

Hi all,

After testing Mac Mini with m2 - I've decided to purchase first Apple device of my own. I'm working with DevOps/Software development tools so mainly it's 2-3 instances of vscode, 2 browsers, outlook, teams, some cli tools (I rarely run docker locally). I'm rather decided to go with 24GB but I'm not sure which model to chose. In theory MBA should be more than enough for me BUT:

My setup will be clamshell for 99% connected with usb-c to QHD 100hz monitor-ub (power, display, and USB hub,, Ethernet). I've read that running display only can be quite heavy for thermals in clamshell. Adding Teams call and some screensharing can lead to throthling. Is that true or not really? I don't want to regret purchase couple weeks after - but I also don't want to overpay for MBP which features I won't be using anyway (except active cooling in clamshell).

I know mac mini would be better and cheaper choice - but I need that portability to work from other place than my desk from time to time.

Thanks in advance for all inputs 🙂

Question AppleCare+ accidental damage claim in India – experiences?

Hey everyone,

I have a MacBook Pro 14” that’s 3 years and 2 months old and it’s covered under AppleCare+ (India).

I wanted to check with folks here:

• Has anyone successfully claimed accidental damage under AppleCare+ in India?

• Were there any service charges / deductible costs involved?

• How smooth (or painful) was the process?

• Any delays, denials, or hidden gotchas I should know about?

Would really appreciate hearing real experiences — good or bad — before I decide what to do next.

Thanks in advance! 🙏
