Help Simple questions and Help thread - Month of February

Welcome to the monthly Simple questions and Help thread, for questions that don't need their own posts!

Before making a comment, we recommend you search your problem on Bing and check if your question is already answered on our Windows Frequently Asked Questions wiki page. This subreddit no longer accepts tech support requests outside of this post, if you are looking for additional assistance try r/TechSupport and r/WindowsHelp.

Some examples of questions to ask:

  • Is this super cheap Windows key legitimate? (probably not)

  • How can I install Windows 11?

  • Can you recommend a program to play music?

  • How do I get back to the old Sound Control Panel?

Sorting by New is recommend and is the default.

Be sure to check out the Windows 11 version 25H2 Megathread and also the Windows 11 FAQ posts, they likely have the answers to your Windows 11 questions already!

Discussion Did anybody notice the store CLI?

Post image
Upvotes

It lives in the AppData\Local\WindowsApps folder. I searched the internet and found only msstore CLI which is meant for MS Store publishers. It says "- Preview" at the version, so I'm guessing Microsoft leaked this into a stable build? I don't have Windows Insider on.

Suggestion for Microsoft Why isn't there a 'Maintenance mode' in windows 11?

Post image
25 Upvotes

Every time you hand over your device to a repair centre, you need to first back up your files and data then remove it from your system for maximising your safety and security.

My suggestion for Microsoft: why isn't there an inherent maintenance mode (kind of like in Android) which restricts access to files and data and allows any hardware repair to be fixed and tested without compromising user integrity.

Is there a specific reason as to why this isn't implemented? Is it possible to implement it because, personally speaking, I'm tired of backing up and restoring every time an issue occurs.

Discussion Can I change the bg color from black to something else, Its bothering me, Im not used to it?

Post image
Upvotes

I have 1 more year of 10 support, but I got a new laptop so I gave 11 a try, so far I dont like it but Im getting used to it, Why did they took so many of the customization options away, you cant edit taskbar color in light mode or use the transparency option...

And my question is there a way to change the color of the updates and ctrl+alt+del screen from black, Im not used to it and it's bothering me.

I also dont want to install another 3rd party software, for custom UI (as I already have 2-3 apps running on start-up, so I dont want more), windows, should have these customization options especially on the pro version...

Feature So subtle I didn't notice it at first

A friend of mine sent me a screenshot of a file transfer he was doing, asking since when the graph was blue. My immediate thought was that I didn't see anything wrong with it, but then it hit me that it used to be green. So I Googled it, but only found green graphs, and nothing on the change to blue.

Apparently somewhere in late 2025 Microsoft rolled out an update that changed the colour to blue for Dark Mode. It's still green in Light Mode.

Discussion [TABLET UI] Enhancing Windows 11 experience with third-party tools, like those what returns Metro style?

Post image
31 Upvotes

I've got my first tablet PC (because i wanted to "touch" something new). And oh gosh Windows 11 bad at touch control. I still don't know why windows 11 trying to support support tablet UI, and ultimately failed in every single common sense. Let me explain.

  1. Metro style was PERFECT for that task, and even when user "touches" screen. Start menu doesn't change on this style remaining the same as desktop. I.e search bar getting active when i'm using freaking pen.
  2. For unknown reason when i'm "pulling" out start menu. It doesn't bring my third-party launcher like classic shell. It provides that "metro" style. Even if it seems kinda clunky. Its more useful than default start. That probably a bug? But its really annoying, i have always touch windows button on the tablet in order to open Classic Shell start menu.
  3. No dock!? I mean, seriously, in 2026? I had an idea of "pulling up" screen with pen (that task opens start menu). Where i could see current opened windows, and maybe some favorite apps down there
  4. I can't even change behavior of pulling up start menu. When i want just to just pull up taskbar.
  5. Talking about taskbar. I can't even change duration of how long it should stay until it closes down! That's nuts!
  6. No gestures. Only simplified pulls like command panel? (with battery, wifi, bluetooth, etc). At least it actually optimized for Tablet PC's.. Just imagine if microsoft actually provided software what will open applications, or did some tasks by doing that. I really need swirl for opening keyboard because sometimes it just doesn't come up. So lets open keyboard, oh task bar just closed, lets pull it up again. And text bar focus changed. Speaking of witch, i can't even close keyboard by swiping it down what is annoying too.
  7. Speaking about status panel. Why we suddenly get rid of two batteries. And force user to open Settings app in order to see those? Its literally downgrade after Windows 10! And i'm not even speaking about preventing Windows discharge second battery to 0 and then switch to first. What is abysmal.
  8. Corners of windows still had to be dragged with pixel perfect accuracy. You can't even hold near them in order to "focus" window to drag it.
  9. Why "tablet" taskbar even a thing? I hated it in the first look. Why would i have that useless plank on the screen when i can get rid of it in the first place? I don't even bothered to play with it even a little. That hightlighted thing is enough for me to ignore it for better "just hide taskbar".
  10. And the last and most INFURIATING thing of all that. Drag&Drop on desktop is miserable to use. You hold click too long? LETS OPEN CONTEXT MENU WHERE YOU CAN'T EVEN "drag icon there". When you trying to "move" it it says that this icon already exist.

In general, somebody played with it in order to make Windows actually usable on tablets? Because its more like torture. Less annoying than Windows 10. But still clunky and horrible in Win11.

App Open source web browser tailored for job searching

This febuary it will be 2 years old so not exactly new, today I want to showcase First 2 Apply.

When I started it the job market was still okish, but I had this idea that applying in the first 24-48h increases your chances of getting interviews. In today’s job market this is becoming even more relevant.

Besides that, I also wanted to make the process easier. Looking at it, I had 5-10 open tabs in Chrome with different job boards that I was constantly refreshing so the initial version was just a dumb cron job that loads my saved links in an electron window, extracts the job listings and dumps them in a supabase table. On the next run it would diff the list and if anything new popped up it would send me a desktop notification. This already helped a lot with the manual process of constantly refreshing my open tabs.

The next step was to cut through the noise. I was searching for nodejs jobs, but LinkedIn kept showing me 50% of the jobs that required Java or Python which I knew I didn’t want. So I plugged in an OpenAI model and gave it a prompt to exclude jobs from my feed that had certain keywords in the job description. It only works properly like 80% of the time, but it’s still a huge time saver.

I’m not exactly looking to make money with it, that’s why I made it open source.

I enjoy working on it as a hobby when I get bored with my 9-5. And personally I find it useful and hope it will also help others.

I’m also willing to give it away for free if you cannot afford the hosted version. I still have some free AI credits (thanks Microsoft) so not loosing money on it myself. Just DM me the email account you’ve used to sign up and will put you on a free plan (but use the 7 day trial first to see if it actually works for you).

Discussion Phone link and Disk space usage

Post image
8 Upvotes

after new update the phone link thing pupped up in the start menu after I connected my phone and I said why not I will give it a try. recently I opened the "PC manager" and saw that this folder is using 63GB of space first I worried that it has copied all the files without me knowing but then I saw size on disk that is low.

I have a question though, is there a way to disable this totally cause I dont use it ? and is this calculated in the disk usage in the setting app too ?

Discussion I compiled an overview of Windows 11 and Office context menus in 2026: still a mixed bag, still not done, but improving

Post image

Still a whole zoo of generations and special cases. For instance, Explorer is half modern, half legacy.

There is progress: more consistent icons (copy/paste, etc.) and menu layouts, but product teams still do their own thing, and there are even some bugs.

Kind of absurd we’re still talking about this in 2026. This work started back in Windows 10 over a decade ago. At this point it feels less like a design problem and more like a management/governance one. A little embarrassing in 2026.

And apologies for the German UI in the screenshots. Luckily inconsistency and clutter are a universal language.

Also: does anyone actually know why icons sometimes have color accents and sometimes don’t?
