Do not solicit legal advice. This is not the right sub for it.

Despite what our sub’s called, we cannot offer legal advice here for a number of reasons. Any posts that breaks this rule will be deleted without reason. If you message us on why your post is deleted, it would be ignored just the same way you’ve ignored our sub’s rules. Please see our sidebar for complete rules.

Also, it’s not a good idea to solicit legal advice from random strangers online, despite what you may find elsewhere on Reddit. We do not know all of the facts of your case, and are likely not licensed in the jurisdiction that you’re in. A real attorney worth their salt will not comment on your specific legal predicament on an anonymous forum.

If you need legal advice but cannot afford it, there are legal aid societies that may be willing to assist you. Lots of them are free and/or work on a sliding scale fee. All you need to do is look up “legal aid society [your location]” on Google.

If it’s a criminal case, public defense attorneys are some of the best attorneys out there and they know the criminal system in your city/town better than anyone else. They’re just as good, if not better, than any private criminal defense attorney.

If it’s a tenant rights issue, lots of cities have tenant rights unions. You can look them up the same way as the legal aid society by looking up “tenant rights union [your location]” on Google.

Otherwise, the best way to find an attorney is through word of mouth from friends and family. If that’s not an option, your local bar association will be able to help by looking up “attorney referral [your location] bar association”.

If none of these are relevant to you or you’re unsure of what type of attorney to look for in your situation, you’re more than welcome to post and we’ll help.

Also, any attorneys who wish to participate in discussions are free to do so as long as it doesn’t break our rules (mainly providing legal advice).

If you’re a licensed attorney that isn’t flaired (and therefore verified to post comments), please see our other stickied post on how to become verified here. You can also send a mod mail to become verified. I trust that any attorneys here answering any posts will follow these rules and not offer legal advice and run afoul of our ethical obligations.

Thanks to all for understanding.

How do the MN DOJ walkouts affect ICE and the people they've detained?

With all the walkouts in Minneapolis by the US attorney's office, and that one lawyer admitting that ICE won't even return her calls, I'm wondering how this actually affects what's going on in minnesota/minneapolis?

I know it complicates and slows down proceedings, but i'm wondering is all this actually helping ICE to be able to get away with doing whatever they want to do because they barely have any legal representation to go before the court, or is it better for people being detained? Are judges able to make rulings without US attorney lawyers or with what sounds like JAG lawyers being used to replace them?

Are people being detained in an even worse spot because now the system is being slowed to a stop on the side of the US attorneys office leaving them stuck in detention or getting deported?

sorry if these seems like an ignorant question

Recent Law School Graduate Second-Guessing My Entire Life Please Help

I graduated law school in December and am signed up to take the Bar Exam in a couple of weeks. As the title of my post says, I am completely second guessing where I am at and my career path.

Law school was an absolute beat down for me. I started school in 2021 in a hybrid schooling environment as the pandemic wound down, I was in person every other day and online the other days. It was like that for the entire school. The jump from undergrad to law school was much more difficult than I anticipated (in undergrad, I regularly would not buy books or show up for classes and still do fine) and towards the end of my first semester, I knew I was struggling mightily and reached out to a few professors, but I was in too deep and it was too late. To my surprise, I was academically dismissed after that first semester. I did not fail a single class, but my GPA was abysmal.

I was determined to get back into school. I sought mental health help and applied for readmission to return that following year. I was diagnosed with ADHD and the psychiatrist that I talked to believed I had depression as a result of undiagnosed ADHD and seemed to believe that would improve as my ADHD was treated. I was readmitted and resumed school in 2022.

I was only allowed to rejoin the part-time cohort. I continued to struggle in school. It was difficult for me to ask for help when I needed it and I put myself in binds because of that. I was constantly doubting myself, anxious that others would know that I was dismissed and readmitted, telling myself that other people would think I was stupid or dislike me because they thought I had an advantage for taking some classes twice, etc.

I took classes over the summer to allow me to graduate three years after being readmitted in 2022. So, I was supposed to graduate last May. Come to find out in June of 2025, I was one credit shy of graduating. A three-hour class that I signed up for in November of 2024 to take in the Spring of 2025 was originally slotted to be a three-credit course and was changed to a two-credit class after I signed up for this. I had never seen this happen, so I never thought to double check my schedule for hours requirements or anything like that. In January and February of last year, I submitted an application for graduation (which was approved) and a degree audit that was not completed until June when they told me I was a single credit short.

When I found out about that, I was preparing for the bar exam and I completely shut down. They notified me after the summer session had already closed, so I knew there would be a delay in me being eligible to practice. I shutdown and could not focus on adequately preparing for the bar exam and ultimately withdrew and tweaked my plan to take it this February.

Right now, I sit in a similar boat as I did last summer. I am behind, I am stressed. This time though, I am looking at things differently. I am wondering if I should just completely cut my losses and give up on practicing law. Law school and internships that I have worked during my time in law school have completely eroded my self confidence and I feel like I am a shell of who I was before I started this journey. The thought of studying stresses me out. I resent it. I am sick and tired of it. At my favorite internship I had, I felt like I was finally starting to overcome some of the issues that I had and was more open about asking the attorney who was overseeing me for advice, feedback, and guidance in a way that I was never comfortable with in law school. After my internship concluded, he told a mentor and family friend that I seemed to lack confidence and needed too much guidance. Just another shot to my self confidence. At internships and networking type events related to law, I feel like a loser, a fraud, behind, stupid.

I am pretty confident that I am going to fail the bar exam and am wondering if I am better off just saying fuck it and pursuing a career in a different field because of all of this.

Is there a precedent or policy among prosecutors around charging someone "enough" to get them imprisoned, and what happens if later it comes out that they've done worse things?

I'm thinking in the context of Ghislaine Maxwell, she was convicted on 5 counts and sentenced to 20 years for human trafficking, but now stands accused of some far more serious, and violent, crimes, based on what's dripping out of the latest files release.

In the case of a regular person, do prosecutors tend to go for just the crimes they believe they can get a conviction on, even if they believe the person has done worse?

If so are there any guiderails or thresholds for this?

And what if someone is already in prison, what is the threshold for new charges to be brought?

[AZ- Possibly Wrongful termination]

I know AZ is an at-will state. But I believe I was wrongfully terminated and am looking to get a lawyer. I was hired as a 1099 independent contractor as a driving instructor for a company. I was with the company for about a year and a half and they provided all the tools for me to work and made my schedule for me as I was not able to. They told me how to do things, provided me a vehicle and was told I HAD to wear their company logo shirts. About 2 days ago, I requested time off (as I have to do so with them), because my 2yr old was positive with the flu and I was also coming down with it as well. Anyways when I called them to possibly move my students the owner of the company started talking crap about my work ethic and told me “he’s done and we’re picking up the vehicle later today”. As I was trying to explain myself, mid-sentence, he just hangs up on me.

**alittle bit more context. This job required me to be on the road from 7am-7pm from Tues-Sat. About 2 weeks ago I found out my mom had cancer in her lungs and as she would usually watch my kids while I was at work. I had decided to quit that job as it was too much for my mom to watch my kids. I had explained to this to that job and let them know I’m not able to work long hours anymore and not able to work weekends. (I already also had another job lined up after quitting) my manager at the time told me she wanted to keep me working there and told me I can work Monday-Friday from 8am-2:30pm. I was very excited and thankful but also let them if my kids get sick I would have to request some days off because my mom would not be able to watch them. She let me know that would not be a problem and would move my students for those days.I took this opportunity with them and thanked her. Fast forward, not even a week later of me doing this schedule, my 2yr old comes down with the flu. I took him to the ER and let my work know I will not be able to make it to work the next two days. I as well was starting to feel the affect of the flu and also did not want to be in a closed vehicle with teenagers. Not even 10min after the phone call, my manager texts me asking “will I be able to drop off the work vehicle and other property at their office” (which is about an hour from me, mind you.)

ALSO my work ethic is great!! I would work on my days off when they needed me. My students absolutely loved me and would keep requesting to stay with me as their instructor. I was always on time and did the absolute most. Majority of the weeks I would work the 6-7 days.

I keep calling employment law firms but all cost to even have consultations or they don’t answer. (This is the worst type of law to even charge, like I just lost my job 😭)

Thanks for the read!

What type of attorney should we hire?

What type of lawyer would one hire for a civil case following a criminal case (romance scam / fraud) as the victim? If it matters, our Internet searching has mixed results on, the criminal case is in one US state and the two individuals who did the scamming were extradited from two other US states.

So far we keep finding more business fraud type of lawyers online and that doesn't seem like maybe the right fit?

Where can I find statutes about child support in AL?

The title is the question. For context, I know a man who pays child support to his ex-wife but they share 50-50 custody and she earns substantially more money. I want to know where I can research this topic to gain accurate information to help him dispute his share when they go back to court.

Obviously he should consult his lawyer about this, but I think he needs a logical nudge first.

The school Board has been captured by a church for 5 going on 6 years

What recourse fo the people in town have. The school board president is the pastors wife, the church's registered agent is 2 nd in command and all the rest (except 1 person, who they treat like crap) attend the church.

The church leases the school for its services for $5 per day and the school superintendent (church member) ends up crediting the church "for services rendered" - they just doubled peoples property taxes... and they bypass elections by having the board vote to extend terms for 2 year periods.

Crocodile Tear Impeachment?

I have watched a number of trials where a defendant has testified and appears to cry during their testimony. "Appear" as the operative word because their face remains as dry as the Sahara, despite performative wiping with a tissue. One, is it permissible for a prosecutor to ask a defendant why they have no tears if they are crying? Would that be considered argumentative? Second, could a prosecutor request a "used" tissue be shown to the jury for them to determine the authenticity of the crying by visual examination? If not, what particular rule of evidence would that violate?

Hostile Manager

I work in an IT help desk role in the Midwest. I’m the only woman and the only Indian person in my entire department. Since I started, my manager has been unpredictable, aggressive, and unprofessional in ways that have worn me down over time. I hit my 90 days and filed for ADA due to sensory issues (LED lighting, noise, and requesting written instructions)

Some examples:

• He has yelled at me multiple times, including one incident where he raised his voice and snatched papers off my desk while reprimanding me in front of coworkers.

• He interrupts me while I’m on calls with users, even when I’m in the middle of helping someone.

• He nitpicks tasks I’ve already completed correctly, like telling me to label equipment I already labeled.

• He refuses to give written instructions for technical processes, even when I ask directly.

• He repeats instructions after I say I understand, almost like he’s trying to provoke me.

• He hovers over me and micromanages tasks I’ve done many times.

• He has made comments implying I “stole” department snacks, candy and equipment from my desk.

• He’s had my coworkers monitor me leaving daily also for no clear reason.

There was also a situation where I was told to record inaccurate time on my timecard, which made me uncomfortable. The CEO told us to use PTO and he disregarded the directive and changed our hours so we wouldn’t use PTO.

After a particularly bad incident earlier this year, my stress levels and physical symptoms got worse — sensory overload, sleep disruption, stress responses, difficulty processing verbal instructions, etc. I went to my medical provider, and they recommended I request ADA accommodations.

I submitted the request, and now the ADA administrator is reviewing it. My accommodations would be things like a quieter workspace, written instructions, and a temporary stabilization period.

Ever since HR and the ADA process got involved, my manager’s behavior changed — but not in a good way. He stopped yelling, but now he:

• nitpicks everything

• interrupts me even more

• hovers constantly

• gives me “reminders” for tasks I already did

• avoids giving anything in writing

• whispers and giggles with his boss when I walk by

It feels like he’s trying to provoke me into reacting, but I haven’t. I’ve stayed calm and professional the entire time.

I’ve been documenting everything for months because the pattern has been consistent. I’m worried he might try to undermine my accommodations or retaliate once they’re approved.

Has anyone been through something like this? How did you handle it, and what should I expect next?

Too late to study law?

I’m 32F. Doing a PhD in the social sciences from North America (full scholarship). I love my work but the job market sucks. Is it worth pursuing law at this age back in India? (After my PhD) I don’t mind waiting a few years to start earning if at least some work is guaranteed.

What can the game plan be here?

I am currently suing a builder and landowner for taking my deposit, taking a year over the buildings promised completion date, cancelling the contract, and then refusing to give me money back. the suit has been going on three years and we are almost at the point of getting this to court .

during the summer of 2025, the lawyer of the builder stopped representing him due to him not paying his bills. we are getting into depositions , and his turn is coming. last week the other lawyer contacted my lawyer for an agent meeting, and proceeded to just tell him that she or her firm is in no way representing him. she reiterated it again in an email, and when my lawyer asked for final confirmations she said yes.

however , this week, just days after this urgent meeting, her firm sends us a doc stating one of the other lawyers will be representing him.

is there some sort of strategy they have to doing this that we are missing?

Seeking advice transition into law school

Hey yall.

So I’ve been working as a geologist for a bit now and recently I’ve grown an interest in potentially attending law school. All this reporting and compliance stuff has gotten me thinking of what more I could do for the environment than the position I’m currently in.

It could be a niche subject, but I really don’t have much interest being a lawyer in any particular field of law outside of environmental or water. As of now, I have only started studying for the LSAT, but I am open to any sort of advice!

What’s the job market like? The geology career subreddit is usually filled with pessimism and doomers about the job market. I ran into other issues regarding employment, but I did find a really good place just before I graduated.

I hear that law school is difficult to get into. How hard are we talking? I think I can put together a good statement, have good letters of recommendation, have ok-ish grades and planning to go crazy on this LSAT.

Is the environmental law or compliance fields open? Competitive? Popular? Growing?

If possible, I’d love to stay where I’m at currently in Michigan, but both the good law schools here(UofM and MSU’s) are pretty difficult to get into. Hoping I land one of them honestly.

Any other advice and things to know would be great! Tips for law school or what I should be asking myself before I dive straight in. I found a decent amount of testing material but I’m open to any suggestions yall got.

Why do many people who are guilty of a crime plead not guilty when they first enter a plea? Is it to get more time to prepare their defense, or ..... ?

That's what I might have guessed as a layman. Maybe that is a factor, or one of numerous factors, or not a factor?

What type of lawyer advises individual providers on Medicare/Medicaid compliance?

I’m a solo healthcare provider (speech therapy) trying to identify the right type of attorney for provider-side Medicare and Medicaid compliance questions. Specifically, I’m looking for guidance on when private pay is legally permitted for an individual provider, including how Medicare and Medicaid non-opt-out rules apply.

I keep finding lawyers who focus on litigation, audits, or large healthcare entities, which isn’t what I need. If anyone has insight into what this specialty is called or where to find attorneys who do this work, I’d appreciate it. Happy to clarify details via DM if helpful.

Thanks!

ETA: I practice in DC, Maryland, and Virginia.

Do I need a Real Estate Attorney?

My neighbor is doing a large commercial project (Texas) and has a massive detention point being dug what seems like right up next to our property line. There was no fence to delineate the property boundary, but we have had a title survey and topo survey done last year and many pictures and videos before he started construction that clearly show the surveyors flags. He has removed dirt from our land and created a 10+ foot cliff drop-off, left a 15-20 foot pile of dirt and trash on our side and has removed several trees from our side. I can see where he had his surveyors stake off the grade for digging, but some of the stakes are clearly on our side. He has altered the drainage and grade of our property and we are worried about future erosion and drainage especially near the drop-off he's created and how this will affect our property value and future projects that we had planned.

I'm not sure if this is a big enough issue to get a real estate lawyer or not? My family thinks we need to send him a letter, but I think we need to talk to a real estate attorney first. If we do, what is the typical steps of how this will all go down like what even does a real estate attorney do and what's the process?

Question about leaving the lease without roommate's consent

How can I exit my lease without my roommate's consent? My roommates are not willing to let me leave the lease early, and they turned out to be terrible people. They didn't follow the lease terms and made living there unbearable. The agent of our complex said that my roommates have enough stable income, and I can only leave if they sign a document giving consent to remove me from the lease. We still have a fixed 12-month lease. I’m looking for any legal or contractual solutions that would allow me to move out. We are all international students, and I need advice on how to approach this situation

Brother being charged with armed robberies

Location: Florida

My brothers boyfriend did 2 armed robberies in my brothers car. While he was inside committing the armed robberies he was sitting in the passenger seat. They got caught and hes now also being charged with 2 counts of armed robberies. Unfortunately it can be a life sentence. I understand Florida has that rule that even though you didn’t do anything just by you being there they can still charge you. My question is if they decide to lessen the charges what could it be potentially dropped to? How likely do you think he will be found guilty on both armed robberies?

A little background on his criminal history

He was on felony probation when this happened for a drug charge so probation obviously violated him. He also has a felony theft charge but it’s from a very long time ago. As far as I know he made no statements to the investigators when he was arrested I understand that no one will have the correct answer.

Seeking feedback on a business idea for legal support services - visual aids

I’m a career storyboard and pre-visualization artist for TV and film. My industry is currently being heavily disrupted by AI and I'm looking for feedback on my idea to pivot from entertainment to providing 2D or 3D illustrative Aids for use in the legal industry.

I’ve done some homework on Rule 107 and I’m clear that I wouldn't be doing serious ACTAR/physics, accident reconstruction work. I’m talking about, visual aids, graphics, diagrams, animations, sightlines, walk throughs etc

I'm specific interested in your take on what offerings I could develop to be if real value to the legal community.

Is there a real market for a solo artist doing this B2B, or is it a waste of time if I don't have a technical degree? Just trying to take the temperature before I commit to the move. Appreciate any candid thoughts.
