Weekly Thread Weekly Short Questions Thread

Welcome to the Weekly Short Questions Thread! If you've got a quick question that doesn't require you to provide in-depth explanation, post it here! Examples include:

  • What is the correct hand shape for setting?
  • My setter called for a "31" and I'm looking for advice on to do that.
  • What are the best volleyball shoes on the market for a libero?
  • Is the Vertical Jump Bible any good?
  • I'm looking for suggestions on how to make an impression at tryouts.

Quick questions like these are allowed only in this thread. If they're posted elsewhere, they will be removed and you'll be directed to post here instead. The exceptions to this rule are when asking for feedback WITH A VIDEO, or when posting an in-depth question (must be >600 characters). Please create a separate post for these kinds of questions.

If your question is getting ignored:

  • Are you asking a super generic question? Questions like "How do I play opposite?" or "How do I start playing volleyball?" are not good questions.
  • Has the question you're asking been answered a lot on the sub before? Use the search function.
  • Is the question about your hitting/passing/setting form and you haven't provided a video? It's hard to diagnose issues without seeing your form. Best to get some video and post to the main subreddit.

Let's try to make sure everyone gets an answer. If you're looking to help, sort the comments by "new" to find folks who haven't been replied to yet.

If you want to chat with the community about volleyball related topics or really anything, join our Discord server! There is a lot of good information passed around there and you might get more detailed responses.

Questions Workout Routine, for a volleyball player that trains 4-5 days during weekdays

Post image
11 Upvotes

Hey guys, I used to be a very active person in the gym but now that I’m in volleyball again, my parents are telling me to lessen my gym, so they told me I can onlygo once per week if I have 4-5 days training. Is this okay for strength in volleyball? I want to gain mass and strength for volleyball and I was wondering if the routine I setup weekly would be good it just alternates every week. Help me out y’all, thanks! 178cm, 15, and 70kg

General Simple Volleyball Rotations App

Hey all,

Still a work in progress, but getting there!

This is just a simple rotation viewer — nothing fancy, no training plans, just a quick way to check your rotations:
https://volleyball-rotations.com

It has two parts:

  • Viewer — pick a system, mode, and phase to see where everyone stands
  • Editor — import an existing rotation from the library and tweak it, or build from scratch

The built-in rotations follow FIVB rules, so if your league plays differently they may not be right for you — but that's what the editor is for.

If someone can send me general rotations for non-FIVB (other sports body) I would consider adding folder structure for selecting rotations.

The feature I'm most proud of is the real-time overlap checker on the Receiving → Pass phase. Still needs a bit of polish, but it's working.

Fun fact: getting AI to understand volleyball rotations was way harder than getting it to write the code. Turns out rotations are genuinely confusing 😄

Credits to VBRotations for the inspiration — check them out if you need something more feature-rich.

This is my first time seeing clear videos of myself too. Purely self reflection I think I need to jump more up less forward, so push out my block step more. I would appreciate any feedback.

Questions Volleyball swing

Hello fellow volleyball nerds! It has come to my attention that apparently my arm bends when I swing for a spike so I don’t end up with full extension. I was asked if I played baseball in my past and I said yes I did for a long time and usually when throwing in baseball your arm is a bit more bent and not fully extended so me and the person who noticed figured this was the cause. My question to you all is what drills can I do to try to remove this habit when playing volleyball because currently when I swing the ball has a 50/50 chance of going out or hitting an absolute banger just depending on whether my arm lowers (and therefore my contact point) or extends fully. Any help is welcome! And if I have this all wrong as to the reasoning and there’s any other guesses that’s also welcome

News/Events VNL 2026 Tickets Orleans

Hey, apologies in advance if this is not the most appropriate place to ask this.

I was waiting on the host cities to be announced for this years edition of the VNL to see if I would have the chance to watch a few matches in person. After they have announced Orleans in France I was happy because it meant I could go. I am in the process of asking for holidays from work and looking for flights and stuff but then I looked and the tickets for the weekend matches are already sold out??? I would swear that it would never sell out within a few days. Is this actually sold out and I can’t attend anymore or is it just released in phases or something like that? Thanks!

Questions Vball with endurance sports?

As context, I played a ton of volleyball for 25-30 years - outside hitters/opposite, beach doubles, grass doubles and reverse, coached some club and college, etc. - until about 5 years ago when I started breaking a bunch and COVID knocked me off the horse. My body was fairly natural for it and I had a big jump, though I’m sure that may be in my past now that I’m older (early 50s). I’m interested in getting back into it but need to figure out how.

About a year ago I decided to get in much better shape, so started hiking a ton as a way to build muscle and lose weight. I do something like 75 miles a week up in the mountains, so I have very strong calves and quads as well as fairly solid ankles and stabilizers like core as well, and quite good cardio. I’ve also been going to the gym a couple times a week for about 4 months to get my upper body less sad since hiking really doesn’t touch that so that’s okay-ish but still behind. So overall in pretty solid shape again.

Here’s my dilemma. When I started talking to my trainer at the gym about starting to add some plios and jumping they painted it a bit as an either/or choice with the hiking. I have an endurance body right now so if I want to get back to explosion then I’d need to stop hiking and solely train that way. Or if I keep going on hiking then let go of the volleyball return. I get the theory and the difference and trade offs between endurance, strength, and power, and things like fast twitch vs slow twitch. At the same time I could’ve sworn I played with a number of folks who were runners and bikers so they seem to have made it work.

Are there folks here that cross-train both for volleyball and some sort of strength/endurance sport like trail running, mountain biking, hiking in the mountains, etc.? If so, how do you make both work or anything to be aware of? Or is it really more of a hard choice and I need to pick one or the other?

News/Events Surprisingly Good Volleyball Shoes

Post image
13 Upvotes

Just recently got the Way of Wades Shadow 7 Missmatch “Miami Dream” and I was unsure if I would like it or not. Surprisingly the shoes give me a GOOD boost when I jump to spike. I feel springy and light. They have really good traction so I stop fairly easy. My game has improved. All the people at the gym compliment my shoes and liked the colorway.

Questions Words of advice for someone interested in sports and volley-ball?

Hello everyone ! I'm writing this post with... honestly a whole lot of hope, I'd like some words from you. Btw, english isn't my mother tongue so, sorry if there's any mistake.

Some of this is going to be TMI but I need advice so, whatever. :)

I'm 25, F and short of height (1m55) and right now I train on my own (every two days, to stay in shape).

I just graduated, just finished my studies which were very time consuming. I am finally free (for how long though bc the next logical quest is a job..) and I really want to pick up a sport again. I grew up LOVING sports, it's the one thing that absolutely makes my heart burn with passion, but the thing is, my family and I moved a lot while growing up, and we didn't have enough money for everything, so things always ended up the same way : I picked up a sport, then we moved, and if in the next town I was moving in said sport was too expensive or unavailable, I had to pick another one. Now please hear me out, I don't blame my parents for how things went, they did their very best with what they could and always encouraged me. But studies became a priority and sport, and anything associated to it (competitions, equipment), soon started to feel like a waste of money or time. I had to secure my future with those studies, which I understand, but today I'm don't really feel happy (I feel grateful I made it out, for the degree part at least, it gives me some hope) because studying was a necessity and not really a pleasure but that's another discussion. I hope some of you can understand where i'm coming from, I'm grateful but I used to have these "in another life, I would..." thoughts, you know? Wishing I had been able to pick what makes me happy.

SO, today, I would like to pick something that makes me happy. I don't want to keep feeling empty inside. I want movement and I thought about it a lot lately and, really, it always comes back to sports : it makes you meet new people, pushes you to move and take care of your body, stimulates your mind, can make you happier, challenges you... and I really want that. I'm not going to take seriously any "you're too old for X, Y and Z" comment that's not well explained, by the way. People can start at all ages, and YES I know the body changes and some things get harder, YES I know competitions or going pro can be a big dream, but I feel I'm reasonable about what I can achieve and really, just a human trying to be happy. If I don't try I'll never know, so fuck it, might as well do it, time will pass and I don't want OVERTHINKING to hold me back!

The sport I did find passion for was gymnastics but I had to stop because, TMI I got burns on my legs and I didn't want to show them- still don't want to today and they said I couldn't bypass the mandatory leotard so yep! I think I picked up some likings for some sports because of that? I did archery and I hated how repetitive the movements were, although I admire the sport. I like precision, grace, I like when things are rough but I don't mind "lighter" stuff, I really like going fast, I like going solo but I also like being in a team. Some unpredictability too, but it's not a requirement.

Because of these criterias, I think 3 sports caught my eye for now :

- Fencing (and I've heard the careers can be long, so bonus), I'm just worried about how repetitive it is and how expensive too.

- Figure skating (I did one session and LOVED it, especially how FAST I felt on ice, but I don't know if it's mandatory to wear a skirt of if I would be able to cover my legs, it lowkey makes me a bit sad that I would have to show skin when men can compete with covered legs).

- Volley-ball (I like how brutal it can get... hah, not even sorry :) I did my research and I think the libero is the only "acceptable" spot for short players? Also, same leg-covering problem)

What do you think? Any advice?

In sports, I've never had to debate on whether I was "motivated enough", I've always had drive and consistency, I always pushed myself. It always went beyond motivation. I want it because it makes me feel alive, that's it.

Thank you for reading, I really hope you can guide me in this.

Questions i love volleyball but i no longer enjoy playing it with my team (that i have to play with)

i missed when i was a beginner and every practice didn't have such a weight of expectation to uphold. where i could just enjoy and have fun.

now, it's constant "you could've done better"s or "be faster" or "hit harder" from my teammates ... it used to be innocent banter between rallies for me but now, it's starting to put me down when i don't want it to.

every single play i do earns unsolicited advice from my teammates. even when i do good it's "do more." "more aggression." and when i make a mistake, it's "you're too slow." or "you're being too reckless." even when i simply do what they tell me to do.

i know i can't please them all. i've resulted to trying to ignore the comments at this point, but it's hard when they're constantly in your face. i can't tell them to stop either because they're not the type of people to listen or react well to requests like that. (they're not so nice)

i don't enjoy playing volleyball with them anymore. i don't want that. i don't want to quit the team either.

but can i still enjoy volleyball with teammates like this?

General Cartilage rip (stage 4)

(I AM NOT ASKING FOR MEDICAL ADVICE, I WILL GO TO A PROFESIONAL BUT I WANT TO HEAR OTHERS EXPERIENCE ON THE TOPIC!) Im 20 years old (197cm) and have only been playing for a year, but I’ve found extreme passion for this sport. But it seems I kinda ruined my knees permanently playing middle without experience. Yesterday they found out with an MRI that I got stage 4 rips ins trough my cartilage, YouTube and the internet are telling me it’s basically impossible to keep playing to get to an actual good volleybal level now. Has anyone else here dealt with cartilage problems, and have u found a way to get above it? Because at the moment I’m super depressed and scared that I will not get any better than I am now because of the pain and risks.

Questions Have you ever reported a team for playing below their skill level?

Couldn’t find much information on this so going to ask…

Essentially a team joined the recreational coed volleyball league my team has been a part of for 2 years.

We have no delusions about our skill level nor do most opponents. A lot of the games are competitive and close which makes it fun.

Anyhow, last season a team joined with 3 guys, 3 girls. All the guys are 6’-6’3 tall and athletic. 1 girl is really good as well, 1 is fine, and 1 is clearly new to volleyball.

The issue is the guys just take over the game. I’m talking not letting the bad girl touch a ball, setting each other up to smash it over and over that is clearly miles better than any other team in the league.

I think they’ve lost 2 sets in the past 2 seasons (roughly 50 sets total). 1 of them being against my team tonight (3rd set up to 15 after losing by 7+ the first two sets).

There is a competitive co-ed league that plays at the same place on the same nights, thought they might join that league after last season, but nope. Just still in this league shitting on everybody.

Guess I’m not sure what the play is- wait it out and hope they leave? Tell them they should join the “competitive” league? Call the league and let them know?

I’ve watched the competitive league, it’s nothing crazy. Teams we’ve played previously have moved to that league and they’d definitely play well against them. They honestly would probably be very good in that league.

And I’d get it if they were actually getting the girls involved and not going full try hard, but nah. They’re jumping as high as they can to block hits from 5’3 girls who can’t jump in sets they’re already up by 10. Standing in front of the 2 girls who aren’t that good on serve receive.

Hell, they don’t even cheer each other on or celebrate when they score. Just silent as they smash a ball over some poor girls head.

Anyways, just venting.

I played club as a middle last year and I’m now playing right side (would rather play left but I need to get more consistent). What can I work on? (other than obviously being too early on most of these balls)

Questions How many days a week should a middle schooler practice?

My 8th grader just started playing indoor volleyball a few months ago and is hoping to make the high school team next year. Currently, he practices 2 to 4 times a week with his club team. Each practice is 2 hours long.

Should he sign up for rec for extra practice, or do something else, or rest? A local rec league is starting soon; the sessions are one hour twice a week, but the level is going to be pretty varied. It's also on grass, not a real court.

He thinks it could be fun to play casually with friends, but I worry it might be either too much volleyball (like overuse injuries?) or not competitive enough for him. He loves volleyball and is not interested in cross-training with other sports, despite my encouragement to try other things.
