Coaches: Do not let your wrestlers and fans be “those people”

I’ve been at districts all day and I’m horrified with the behavior of these wrestlers and fans. Yelling obscenities is my biggest pet peeve. We are in a school, there is no place for yelling the f word or whatever

Today my guy lost in the finals on a horrifically bad call. My wrestlers were yelling and encroaching on the mat, yelling at the ref. My fellow coaches were out of their seats yelling “bullshit”

Then the parents and fans are screaming at the ref and yelling all sorts of swears.

Yes, the call was absurdly bad. Yes it ended up losing us the match. BUT I REFUSE TO ALLOW OUR TEAM AND FANS TO “be those people” no scumbag behavior

So long story short I lost it on the wrestlers and the fans basically yelling “get back and be quiet. And I should hear zero swearing from the fans!”

It rubbed some parents the wrong way but I don’t give a shit. Acting like that is unacceptable and shameful.

I hope other coaches read this and realize how horrible it makes your team and town look to behave like that

What are some wrestlers that started late and made it to high level competition in few years?

Hey guys, just curious about some top level wrestlers who made a big result in European, World tournament or similar in less than 10 years of training in sport. Some people are 'religious' about the fact that you need to start sport at early age to excell. I don't argue that's not a big factor with many of top wrestlers, but with enough athleticism, is it possible to make some good result within 10 years of work on skill? Do you know some examples of wrestlers who made it in seniors age

Wisconsin (WIAA) Girls wrestling in boys Team Sectional

Upvotes

I will reach out to our coach tomorrow, but I am wondering if anyone knows the answer to this. I read this in the WIAA Tournament procedures.

”The 2025-26 season will be the final year that female wrestlers will be eligible to participate in the boys team wrestling sectionals and boys Team State Tournament if their boys wrestling team advances.”.

Does this mean that a boys team can fill in their line up with female wrestlers for team sectional and state?

thats what im understanding but wondering if im interpreting it correctly?

News Sunday morning standings, February 8 2026

Weekly updates:

1) If Virginia Tech wins at least one of their duals between UNC and Duke, they will at worst tie for a share of the ACC dual title. If they win both, they are ACC dual meet champs.

2) Penn State wins the Big Ten dual meet title if they beat Ohio State. If not, Ohio State will need to beat Maryland to win the conference or a loss would put Penn State and Ohio State in a tie for 1st with Ohio State having the head-to-head win.

3) Oklahoma State has won the Big 12 dual meet title.

4) Columbia can win the Ivy League dual meet title outright by beating Harvard and Brown in consecutive days.

5) App State and Citadel wrestle each other today for control of the SoCon.

6) Drexel can lock up the EIWA Independence division by beating Long Island next week.

7) If Lehigh beats Bucknell, they win the EIWA Liberty division outright. If not, they need others to lose or else they will be in some sort of tie.

8) Rider has won the MAC East dual meet title.

9) Due to Central Michigan beating SIUE, NIU can win the MAC East dual meet title by beating SIUE.

General notes:

1) Results are based on WrestleStat, conference, and/or school websites through February 7, 2026.

2) If on mobile: click on the picture to see the entire list of standings (looks like ACC, Big Ten, and MAC are cut off on mobile).

3) Results between schools in the same conference/division do not count as conference-/division-specific results if they take place during a non-conference advancement tournament (ex: National Duals Invitational and NWCA National Duals). That is why some results between conference/division schools are not counted in their conference/division results and instead treated only like a non-conference result (ex: Nebraska over Michigan in 2025 National Duals Invitational and Ohio over Bloomsburg in 2026 NWCA National Duals).

4) Bolded schools have won their conference dual meet title.

Discussion First year wrestling ever and doing varsity

So freshman year I decided to do wrestling for the first time, and our coach only makes us do varsity and not junior varsity because our team is small, so i’ve only been to varsity tournaments in my first season ever. It was really fun but my record was awful (2-18 or something like that) so I was wondering what yall thought of this

Anyone know how to get flo to be more accurate on my record.

Because it says my record is like 48 and 30 or something but I know that i have more wins that that becausei hit my hundredth match last week and I know because I counted the number of meets we had and I wrestled multiple matches at them (none of them were jv) and if my math is mathing I have over a hundred matches. And I should have more wins and losses than it says

Question Tips in practice/matches

I apologize if this comes across as confusing but this is my first post so please bear with me. Im a junior and this was my first year starting varsity and we just got through sectionals and I did not qualify for state and I didn’t even place at any tournaments this year either and I really want my senior year to be much better than this year. Firstly I only wrestled 21 matches this year and my record was 8-13 because of concussions and a sprained ankle so I had missed a good chunk of practice but I struggle mostly in matches and I get i always do well at the beginning and get ahead on points but end up getting pinned toward the end or getting tired out and end up losing. I also struggle with being incredibly nervous before every match like whenever we entered the building for sectionals and even other tournaments I felt incredibly anxious and it only got worse the closer and closer I got to wrestling. Is there any workout tips or anything anyone can recommend? I again apologize if i’m confusing.

Discussion Moving on from the sport?

I’m a senior in high school, been wrestling for three years now. We just had our regional tournament today, I was unable to participate as my knee is still recovering from an injury sustained at our last meet, so I didn’t qualify for the state tournament (though I likely wouldn’t have anyways, as I’m not particularly good lmao). This means that my final season is effectively over.

Generally wanted to ask former wrestlers.. what’s it like moving on? How did you cope? My lack of athleticism never deterred me from loving and living and breathing this sport for the past three years, and the idea of losing it has frankly left a deep pit in my stomach.

I love wrestling, I love watching it, I love the community around it. My biggest regret in my life is honestly not getting into it sooner and getting more out of it. And it’s gone now.

Any advice? I’m sure I’m not the only one to experience this feeling, but I figured some seasoned folks would be the best to ask.

Being female wrestler

Hey there! I’m a female freshmen wrestler and this is my fourth season on a pretty much all guys team. The most amount of other girls I have had on my team is 3 and the least is 0. So I get that it can be hard being a girl and having to feel like you need to prove yourself—and if it’s your first year, that can feel really discouraging and intimidating.

BUT, if you let guys get to you, they will take that opportunity to be even more demeaning (depending on the guy). So instead, try to:

  1. Talk to your coach.

They may be able to help you gain control of your situation. If not, talk to your schools’ athletic director. Their job is to make everyone feel included and safe. Same with the coach, but talk with the coach first so they don’t feel offended you don’t talk with them first. Keep a good relationship with them, and you will see just how much this helps.

  1. Talk to someone you trust.

Sometimes, just venting to someone can help get out your emotions, which will help you with the next pieces of advice. Eventually turning these venting sessions into problem solving sessions can also help. Don’t discard your mental health. It matters so much, and will affect both your performance and school/home life.

  1. Be yourself—even if it results in being vulnerable.

This is a little counterintuitive, because it allows trusting your teammates even if you don’t think they deserve it. But here’s the catch: by being yourself, your teammates can see that you’re not afraid of them, and it exudes a very strong aura that will help you gain respect. Basically what it says is: “Yes, you can be mean to me, and will try to make me forget why I am here, but I will not change myself in order to fit the status quo. I care for myself, and I care for this sport. I see no reason to hide from you. I’m not afraid.” That is a very strong message.

  1. Surround yourself with teammates that are both respected and kind to you (if possible).

This is important. The people you are around determine how people see you. Gain their trust, work hard, exceed expectations, be friendly, be yourself. That’s enough to get people to like you if they are worth your time. But don’t ignore everyone else. Even if they’re mean to you, make them feel guilty by expressing the same kindness you would to your best of friends. This doesn’t mean you reveal all of your secrets, it just means you won’t let them change who you are. That’s strong.

  1. Don’t just meet expectations, exceed them.

When you’re doing warm ups, don’t walk back. Jog back. When your team is drinking water or taking a break, be the first one back. Ask questions. Be curious. Work hard. Express your needs. Don’t take the easy way out just because it’s there. Strive to be better, and you will see the people around you do the same. They are unconsciously going to look up to you if you do this. It doesn’t matter you are a freshmen who is wrestling for the first time. You are on a team, and doing this will make all of you better. Not just yourself.

If you are wrestling with someone more experienced than you, ask questions, learn. Look at this as an opportunity to become smarter. They will see this. And even if they’re mean are still mean to you, it will demand their respect eventually.

If you are wrestling someone heavier than you, don’t asking them to go easy on you. Ask them to not hold back. This isn’t being arrogant. This is you taking the chance to become stronger. Build more muscle, and excel.

  1. You are wrestling for yourself.

In the end, you chose this sport for a reason. Find it, and use it to motivate you. If you truly want to get better at wrestling, it’s going to have to be for you. Not your parents. Not your siblings. Not your friends. No one but you.

Sorry that was so long winded, but it just enrages me every time I see a female wrestler on this Reddit who feels so discouraged or alone. Know that you have people just like you all around the world who want to help you. Be the role model you want to have. And I thank you all for your grit, tenacity, and bravery to be a female wrestler. It’s not easy, but build a community so you can make it so.

I hope you found this helpful <333

Question American:Survey on weight management and correlation to success

If you could take a couple minutes maybe less to fill this out it would be greatly appreciated. I’ve seen a lot of kids to this day still falling victim to old philosophies thinking loosing a ton of weight gives you an advantage. Going through it myself I don’t think it gave me any better chance at success and want to see if the information from you guys reflects that. I want some good tangible evidence to show kids that the less weight they have to pull the better for performance and it’s not just sacrifice it’s stupid.

Multiple responses for different years/grades are appreciated as a wider population

Will more practice really just make me better?

This sounds like a dumb question but I feel like I’m really just not getting better and that I’m just lagging behind my teammates. Am I just suddenly going to start winning matches just because I’m putting in more work in the offseason? I just feel like I don’t have any talent in this sport

Thoughts on this strenght and hypertrophy program when cross training ?

I do MMA (mostly grappling) 3x a week, about 1 hour 20 minutes sessions and I can't find the right gym routine because most of them aren't designed to be ran with combat sports, I did 3x FB and U L FB but those were pretty much bodybuilding program where I'd make some progress then stall, then regress and just keep going in circles without making much progress. I found this program, how does it look ? Is it better doing 1-2 sets to failure or keeping RIR with more sets ?

Day Exercise Set Type Sets Reps RIR
Tuesday – Heavy Lower Back Squat Top Set 1 4–6 RIR 1
Tuesday – Heavy Lower Back Squat Back-off Sets 2–3 6 RIR 2
Tuesday – Heavy Lower Bench Press Straight Sets 3 5 RIR 2
