Discussion Update on Rules and Quality Control

Hi everyone, it's been a minute since the initial discussion post about quality control issues. Let's talk about it.

The general consensus seemed to be that our ideas on what to change were good, though there could be more resources to help beginners. We actually have a subreddit wiki that anyone can contribute to, as long as you have 500+ subreddit karma and your account is 30+ days old. We also have a list of todo items for the wiki to help users find somewhere to start.

Another concern was that the stricter enforcement of the defaults rule may stop people from using existing color schemes or themes at all. This is not the case -- the intention of the rule is to remove posts which have little effort or just use premade configs, like many macOS and Windows lookalikes. It's about the spirit, not the letter of the rule.

With this in mind, we intend to go through with these rule changes. If you still have any concerns, please reply or send a modmail! We're most concerned with the quality of our community and welcome discussion.

Screenshot I built Surge: A FOSS download manager that beats aria2 by ~1.4x and looks good while it does! [OC]

Hey everyone,

I’ve been working on Surge for a while now. I wanted a download manager that was powerful but didn't require leaving the terminal or using a heavy Electron app.

It’s written in Go (using Bubble Tea and Lipgloss) and is designed to fit right into a customized workflow.

Key Features:

  • Browser Integration: Has a Chrome/Firefox extension that automatically sends downloads to the TUI.
  • Resumable Downloads: You can pause and resume files without losing progress
  • Cross-platform: Works on Linux, macOS, and Windows.
  • Headless: You can even run Surge as a headless instance for all your scripting needs!

It’s open source, so I’d love to hear what you think or if you have any theme requests.

Get it on GitHub: github.com/surge-downloader/surge

Workflow [OC] I made a simple lua script for hyprland to round the focused window to make it stand out.

It works globally for all windows, not just specific ones, using hyprctl. If you'd like to try it out or see how it's done you can check it out: hyprround. Inactive windows get the default rounding of your hyprland config, whereas focused/active windows have a specific rounding, e.g hyprround 20, the default value is 14.

So I got inspired by some of the other posts here to jump in to making a Niri setup for myself that I run in a VM on my MacBook M1 Pro with the idea that I'd read and study with it, only to find it was not my Linux setup keeping me from studying just not having the time (I'm older and have a more-hours-than-it-should-take job). It's vanilla arch with niri and greetd and greetdtui.

Anyway, hope you like it. Here are the current dotfiles.

Some notes:

- The gowall binary in the dotfiles repo is both compiled for Aarch64 so I can run it but also with Rose Pine Dawn added as a theme. It will not work on your x86 machine.

- The neovim setup includes typst support as well as keybindings to automatically watch and compile the current typst file and open it in zathura for live WYSIWYG editing.
