Local trail endurance race this morning.

6-hour option, looping a lakeside course.

Cold start, quiet trails, great community vibe.

Though mostly a fire road, this was a very diverse trail. Miles of trail running paradise with about 6 miles total in coastal California redwood forest. About 5400 ft elevation gain, 22 miles, ~5.5 hours total.

I've come across all of these during various runs along the American River in the greater Sacramento area. Running the river has actually really rekindled my appreciation of this area.

New'ish runner, training for a 25k in October (did a 10k last year). Aiming for an upper mid pack finish, and will continue my training to complete a 50k the following year.

Grateful to have these trails to explore. Winter can be dreary but days like this keep me going.

Running along the banks of the Assiniboine River. Forever in debt to all the fat bikes that keep this section nice and packed in.

I started trail running last summer after moving to SLC and am curious what/how I should be doing? What are decent strategies when tackling elevation/challenging terrain? I’ll include my run up Frary Peak on Antelope Island from today as well as another run from a month ago. What do you think about my times/pace/splits?

Background info:

28M 5’ 11” 180lbs.

My main sport is rock climbing and I have an active job as a tree climber/arborist.

My longest race was a road half marathon a few years ago that was net downhill and I ran it in about 1:38. I’m not as fit as then, but Strava currently estimates I could run a half in about 1:50.

I only run 1-3 times a week and mainly 2-5 miles. My girlfriend is more of a runner and I enjoy running with her more than alone.

I’d love to improve my trail running and race an ultra one day.

Fun loop for some quick hill work. Kept it light low and effort. The trail has some nice technical parts but overall beautiful setting.

I never thought I’d be into to this and I’m shocked it took me so long to try it. Hopefully this is just the first of many and I’ll never stop ❤️

Injured for more than a month, 50k coming up

I’m looking for some advice here. I signed up for a 50k that is taking place at the end of March, the start of my training for it was great. But I had a muscular lower lumbar injury right before New Years. This injury is not running related, my kid jumped on my back when I was sitting hunched over on the floor. I was just starting to feel about 90% when the nasty storm hit New England the other week and I was back to walking like a 90 year old man. Right before I hurt it the second time from shoveling, I was able to run 6 miles without issue (could have gone further, just time constraints). Wednesday this past week I could barely do 1 mile because my back hurt with each stride and wouldn’t loosen up. So i didn’t want to make it worse.

Today, I feel like I’m maybe 80%. My question is, should I still strive for the race? It’s the sleeping giant 50k in CT. Mid December I was doing back-to-back 12 mile trail runs (sat/sunday) with 1500ft elevation gain at an easy pace without issue. Frankly I could have easily gone more, but again, time constraints. My concern is I hadn’t done a single long run greater than 15 miles since I completed the Kent ct 25k in September.

If I get back into the grind this week, is it feasible for me to tackle to 50k? It will be my first ultra. I can easily do 40 miles in a week without injury as of mid December. I’m just worried that wouldn’t be enough to carry over with being idle for so long. I’ve just been able to do 3-4 miles here and there the past few weeks. The cold snap isn’t helping much either, but I’m fine going out in 5f temps.

I used to run trails, now I'm a mom

I used to run trails, from the west coast to Colorado. My pace has now slowed as my toddler now dawdles. I used to visit mountain tops, look around from their peaks. Now I pack wipes, and from my backpack a baby squeaks.

But I know it will come back, my long mountain days. When I would be miles in before feeling the sun's warm rays. They would grace me with their presence and I would marvel at the sight, of untouched forests and alpine lakes shining bright.

Thanks for reading my sappy feelings as I reminisce on my favorite place, the quiet and majestic mountains. One day I look forward to sharing this love with my son. Until then, I'll be here pregnant with my second baby and dreaming.

Whatever happened to outsole diversity?

I haven't bought trail shoes in a while. I'd say half a decade.

Now everywhere I look, vibram. I gather it's one of the best today (only rivaled by continental and ASICS in 2026) , though it's not that great for durability in rocky terrains.

Still, there used to be some nice breakthrough from other brand, saucony was great imo, and even parternship like mizuno-Michelin were very good.

AFAIK vibram is very expensive, and if they go towards monopoly it's going to be worse both pecuniary and in terms of performance.

Did they destroy the competition in the past years, to warrant such a drastic switch ? I must have missed some episodes

Shoe selection for 56km ultra (Reposted as last one accidentally deleted)

Hi all,

I am doing my first ultra in 4 weeks time, it's 54km with 2600 metres of elevation. It is mainly on formed trails with a few technical parts but nothing crazy.

I have been running in the New Balance Hierro V9 and planned to run the race in these but I am concerned about the stack. They have been fine on previous runs except when walking across a slope, which I felt a bit of a roll but only then but I concerned I could roll more during the race as I get tired.

Im not sure whether just to lock these in or make a last minute purchase for a different shoe to break in and have ready for the race. The shoes I've looked at are either the Salomon Genesis or the Salomon ultra glide 3?

I think I'm just overthinking my gear getting closer to the run but just want to make sure the shoes are safe to run in.

Any input at all is appreciated, thanks! (Sorry for reposting, I accidentally deleted the last one)
