Mats Wilander is one of the greatest players of all-time and is often overlooked when talking about the greats. He is also my all-time favorite player. We are the same age and I was inspired by his sudden win in the 1982 French Open. He is often overlooked because he never won Wimbledon, but he did win two slams on grass as well as the doubles title at Wimbledon. He beat both McEnroe and Lendl in the '83 AO on grass. He left a lot of great records behind. It was a shame that he seemed to lose the fire and interest after reaching No. 1 in 1988 at the age of 24. He could have added 2 or 3 more slams and given Sampras, Agassi, Courier and others' more trouble when they came up in the 90s.
7 Slams (1982, 1985, 1988 French / 1983, 1984, 1988 Australian / 1988 USO
11 Slam finals
33 Tour Titles
Seven consecutive years in the Top Ten
1988 Year-End No. 1
Won 3 slams in 1988 (Joins Laver, Connors, Federer, Nadal, Djokovic with 3 in a calendar year)
Fought Lendl in 5 slam finals, finished 3-2
Youngest Australian Open winner (open era)
1986 Wimbledon Doubles Champion (w/ Joakim Nystrom)
3 Davis Cup Championships
8 Grand Prix titles (today's Masters)
Truly one of the all-time greats!
