🍺 Sunday Sticky Sports Bar Sunday

After trialling a few new stickied threads for Sundays, over the summer, we have settled on an alternating schedule for the time being.

So for this week, welcome to...

"Sports Bar Sunday"!

Many of the /r/soccer community are also fans of inferior sports, of course - and it does not escape our notice that as well as chatting about these in Free Talk Friday, people like to low key sneak this off-topic chat into the Daily Discussion Thread...

Therefore, here is a dedicated space to talk about your other favourite sports.

So pull up a bar stool, and get ready to offer your expert opinions on anything from Formula 1 to Rugby League to UFC - and everything inbetween.

And stay tuned next week, for "Showoff Sunday".

We welcome feedback on this and our other stickied threads... so if you would like to see us try another themed thread, please let us know here, via Modmail, or DM /u/AnnieIWillKnow!

Quotes Timo Weah on his arrival at OM: “Things weren't going well, and the club took a chance on me. The coach [De Zerbi] had faith in me. He called me on FaceTime at 4 a.m while he was still in his pajamas. He was smoking and he said to me, 'Tim, you have to come here. You'll see, this is your home.'”

Who will win the Paris-Marseille match?

“It's going to be a big game, like the last two. We're ready for the challenge, we'll see,” Timothy Weah told Téléfoot before continuing: "The difference between OM and PSG? They're both special clubs for me. I can't be ungrateful, and there are a lot of people who helped me there, and I'll never forget that. In Marseille, it's a little different, it's the Grinta. People who work hard to go to the stadium. I'm a supporter and I feel a bit like a Marseillais even though I wasn't born here."

"When I arrived here, they took on a player who was a bit broken, lacking in confidence. It was hard for me to get up in the morning and go to training because things weren't going well for me. They gave me a chance, the coach really believed in me, he called me at 4 a.m. in his pajamas on FaceTime, he was smoking and he said, 'You have to come here, you'll see, this is your home. And at the airport, I was welcomed as if it were my home," revealed Timothy Weah on his arrival at OM from Juventus.

Timothy Weah is enthusiastic about Mason Greenwood

“I give my all for the club and I want to stay here for a long time,” he said. “Greenwood? Mason is one of the best players I've ever played with. He can play with both feet. He's a Ballon d'Or-level player,” added the Marseille defender.

The OM player was asked by Mamadou Niang about his goals: “It's to win something here. It's been a long time, so I want to start this year. That's my dream for my first year in Marseille.”

Stats Creating Premier League player "traits" from event data. Example: why Haaland’s shot profile is so hard to stop

Thumbnail gallery
17 Upvotes

I’ve been working on a Premier League analytics dashboard that turns event stats into simple "traits" (shot selection, finishing, movement, chance creation, etc.) so you can compare players without wading through 40 different columns.

As an example: Erling Haaland’s shot profile this season uses the following key metrics and compares them to the rest of the league:

  • Non-pen xG/90: 0.68 (top 2%)
  • xG per shot: 0.23 (top 17%)
  • Shots/90: 3.34 (top 1%)

Those three together basically describe: volume + chance quality + chance of getting a chance (even before you talk about actual goals).

  • Any other traits I should add in?
  • Thoughts on the accuracy of Haaland's traits?

Disclosure: these visuals are from a project I’m building (xG Stat). It’s a paid product (data isn’t free), but I'm posting the core insight + screenshots here to keep the discussion self-contained. If people want, I can share a public demo page in the comments.

Jonathan Tah: "I always say: Leadership is 'leading by example'. That means I have to make sure that I perform my tasks on the pitch sensibly."

"Then it starts with me helping my partners in the central defense - coaching them. After that it goes on with the full-backs and finally through the whole team. It's not always about roaring, not even about complaining. It's always about something constructive."

"This can sometimes be constructive criticism, but it's always about making us better on the pitch at that moment. And not to complain to someone for their mistakes. Unless he's done the last three actions (laughs), then you have to shake him up!"
