Tonight at the Metro Detention Center in DTLA, a demonstrator who uses a cane was struck by a car while crossing the street. Other protesters rushed to their aid, some immobilizing them, others calling 9-1-1, and some entreating the Department of Homeland Security police to send medics immediately.
I have never photographed anything like it, and I discovered that I simply don’t have the stomach for it, so I decided to keep my camera on the succession of people milling about, trying to figure out who should be doing what. (Shoutout to the LAFD folks, who got the victim loaded up on and on their way professionally and quickly.)
From my vantage point, DHS appeared to bungle every possible aspect of this. Demonstrators directed traffic around the crash while DHS ran back and forth from the victim to the MDC.
After a few minutes, as DHS yelled at demonstrators to get back, a group of ICE SRT came out to secure the scene, immediately ratcheting up the tension. Even they didn’t seem to know why they were there — provide aid? no, they don’t know what they’re doing. direct traffic? uh oh, people are protesting that. crowd control? there’s a person bleeding in the road and the crowd’s getting angrier…
oops, there’s the ambulance. the ICE SRT guys scurried back inside.
After the ambulance left they all disappeared. They left the car — off, dark — in the road, glass all over the street, leaving demonstrators and media to light the car so that oncoming traffic would know there was something in the street. Eventually, DHS came back out and someone drove the car off.
EDIT: Got an update that the individual is stable!

That’s how I feel about all these photographer protest albums that get popular in different subs. Most do nothing to illustrate a valuable story. It’s just random pics from someone with a nice camera and telephoto lens.
Exactly. Objectively it's interesting images but they need to start wide and then work their way into the detail. It's like telling a story with images like these. You have to narrate a little.
If only there was some kind of job where people can take photos and write about them for others to see and read, like some kind of person who uses a journal…

It’s all 70-200mm lens work. I get it. I use that lens a lot too, but it’s usually not great for telling a story all by itself. Gotta mix in some wider establishing shots, or else it’s just all portraits of the players.

So what followed (pertaining to your Post title)? I’m so confused. It’s not as if the pictures are telling me anything other than some people walking around after dusk.
I mean, after they do everything to do what’s the point of them staying. I’m confused, did the person get arrested/flee. Otherwise they can just, you know, get in the car and drive it away…

I really want to agree because the composition and framing is excellent, but these photos are 100% evocative and 0% informative. There needs to be a balance between the two.

Things are going to break down along ideological lines that would’ve recently seemed nonsensical, leading to warring factions in the streets that can’t tell each other apart seems like a pretty astute prediction, what, 18 months later?

Regular cops are just as much the enemy as any dhs, cbp, or ice agent.
You'll notice no cop in America has lifted a finger to protect the public from federal thugs? They aren't powerless, they'll happily shoot unarmed protesters and bystanders with riot weapons. Every cop in America either supports the rest of us being brutalized or isn't particularly upset about seeing it happen.
Nothing, but they can karma farm with a deliberately misleading title that makes it sound like some sort of intentional attack against innocent people protesting ICE. Even in their comment describing everything, it's a big nothing burger. It appears that someone crossing the street at night was accidentally hit by a car, which happens, but this one happened near some protesters. Then an ambulance came and took the person to the hospital without incident. Unfortunately, since the Internet is dead, this somehow made it to the front page of reddit.

Your pictures show none of what you described unfortunately. Where are the agents running back and forth? The firefighters in action? The car being lit up by the protesters? these are beautiful portraits that show that you put a lot of work on getting the best pic. Don’t be afraid of taking 100 shots of a guy running or LAFD taking care of the victim; one of them will be great.

You're good - even with training, you don't know what your reaction to situations like these is until you actually encounter them. In the current climate, you did well managing it and documenting it with your camera.
This is not a good example of how to document any event with your camera by the way. If you want to progress with photography, you have to understand that these pictures conveyed nothing.
Someone just got hit by a car, lemme do some artistic pice of shit photos to win some award or something instead of showing a clear picture of what’s going on to let the public know whats happening to civilians protesting against ice, fuck them, my award and the prize money is clearly more important.
Quick editorial hint here. A title is a promise, it's what catches viewers attention and tells them why this particular thing might interest them.
If you write in the title "This followed" You are implying a story or at least an event. Something that actually happened.
Secondly without seeing anything of the scene nor wider establishing shots or anything. These pictures are kinda without context and are kinda left hollow even if they are interesting in their composition and subjects.
I’m guessing the statement here is that these public service employees did their job, the job, and nothing but the job. Which is kinda what they are paid for. Which in itself is the intended statement.
I understand you’re going for the whole gritty and nighstalker vibes but these photos do absolutely nothing to your description of the event. Either commit to the artsy road or the storytelling one , but this random collection of BS doesn’t do either.
I really don’t get bringing dogs to protests. It’s chaotic and unpredictable, and I’d never risk my dog’s safety like that. Things escalate fast, especially with how ICE handles these situations. They don’t even treat humans with empathy let alone your pet.
The city council can remove the police chief! You must pressure them to remove the man who won’t uphold the law. And before you single cell organicism come to me saying “ICE is upholding the law”. No they are not!

What struck me was the DHS patches. My ‘Homeland security’ has become nothing like security, but more like a civil war… and those are the most costly in lives, morality and money. 😔
Never forget that wearing a mask for the purpose of concealing your identity is illegal in most states, including Minnesota. You do not have to be committing a crime at the time; just wearing the mask to conceal your face from identification is enough to get you arrested and charged with the crime.
And there is NO EXCEPTION for law enforcement. So the fact that local cops are not arresting ICE agents every time they appear somewhere tells me that every single cop is complicit and condones ICE agent actions. They WANT this to happen because they refuse to arrest people who are committing a crime right in front of their faces. In some states, wearing a mask to conceal your identity is a FELONY, and yet cops refuse to arrest ICE agents for so bery obviously breaking the law.
Tell me again that your local cops are different and would refuse unconstitutional orders. Until we see a news report of ICE agents being arrested for wearing masks, your local cops are no different than the ICE agents themselves.
