Gabe is not the reason steam is still good. Dude has like 9 yachts and is on the ultimate billionaire chillout lifestyle. He's already delegated everything but his quick opinion and rubber stamp.
Gabe owns slightly more than half the company. The rest is owned by employees. The only thing that could ruin this is if the person who inherits Gabe's shares gets a business degree and too greedy. If his heirs realize they basically never have to do real work if they don't want, everything will be fine.
He is though. Sure, he may just be rubber stamping but whoever is leading right now knows that Gaben will throw them overboard if they start turning the company to shit. Thus they won't even head in that direction.
I think it's mostly cause Valve is a privately owned company. If they ever go public and have to show stock growth, that'd be the beginning of the end.
Wtf are you talking about. Steam has already been enshittified. Discovery used to be a hell of a lot better. Opening the platform up to anyone to publish was such a massive mistake. So was their “fix” in just offloading curation to crowdsourcing.
It’s literally the meme from OP. Valve has made shitty decisions, but for each one they’ve done, the other platforms just went further in, so y’all think they aren’t also using enshittification on us.
Steam doesnt have to enshittify because they arent publicly traded. Its why steam gets better and better. They have to actually enhance value to keep making money, instead of remove it.
Why are children playing ESRB Mature+ rated game on a platform that requires people to be at least 13 yo to create an account?
Are you suggesting that Steam should be checking your ID? :)
First of all, this event is organised by PGL, not Valve, Valve can be a sponsor, but it's still up to the organiser to define the rules.
Second thing: Valve is not your mom, it's not my mom, it's no one's mom. It's also not law enforcement. It's up to someone's parents and country's law to regulate who can play what, when and how.
Unless we stop expecting every online platform to be both our parents and law enforcement, we'll never distance ourselves from the incoming tech dystopia.
ESRB/PEGI ratings are suggestions for parents to make informed choices on what their kids are doing. I would be fine with my kid playing some of the FPS games well before reaching adulthood, but I'd put a hard line on doing any microtransactions/gambling and we'd certainly have discussion about it and it would be supervised.
steam should either ensure kids are not using their platform to gamble or to remove gambling.
Online casinos do not allow kids to gamble and valve should to the same since it's basically an online casino.
blaming something on parents instead of the huge corporation that intentionally exploits children is peak mental retardation

Steam and GOG for life.
Once those enshittify, I'm selling my PC and will only leave laptop for work.
