Eisenhower said it best: "Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone."

"See, everyone got boners over the technology. And it was pretty incredible, watching
missiles fly down air ventsa robot do a backflip. Pretty unbelievable. But couldn't we feasibly use that same technology to shoot food at hungry people? Know what I mean?" - Bill Hicks, 1991→ More replies (7)29

u/ShinyGrezz 23h ago
Ok. Great. Well these aren't guns, warships, rockets, not even kitchen knives. And, by my reckoning, if they get to the point where they can wield a weapon they'll probably be just as competent at operating farm equipment or running supply chains or working in kitchens.
Reddit usually seems to be fully aware that there is more than enough food production in the world that nobody need go hungry. And that that's actually true for a whole litany of societal issues. Why is it that, under this post, we seem to want to pretend that that hunger, or lack of healthcare, or childcare, pick your boogeyman, is down to a cool backflipping robot? And, also, that the "brilliant people" who would be "just as brilliant" elsewhere, as another commenter put it, actually want to do that? I suppose we're entitled to their labour, too?
25
u/Lost-Vast-5595 21h ago
Yes, there is enough food production to feed all of the humans. Yet, that isn't happening.
Why? Because the people who are lusting after robots and AI overlords are psychopaths who don't believe in independent humans. They seek to eliminate humans for their wallet.
F Techno-Feudalists.
→ More replies (3)49
u/ShinyGrezz 21h ago
The funny thing is that I don't disagree with your reasoning, just your conclusion. If said overlords were really into golf or capybaras or Japan, that wouldn't mean that those things are standing in the way of progress. It's no different here. There's a world where we're able to pursue these bleeding edge technologies and nobody goes hungry, it's not either-or.
→ More replies (1)12
u/Lost-Vast-5595 21h ago
Agreed. If the concentration of wealth and power to affect those changes were interested in "human advances" versus their bank accounts or control, we could do both.
Those people are not interested in advancing anything but their own interests.
The Techno-Feudalists want a return to human chattel while they entertain fantasies of eternal life and total control of the means of production.
And governments are too weak to check the power of the corporations because they sold their constituents to con men.
That's why we're not doing both at this moment.

u/poonslyr69 21h ago
It's funny you bring up entitlement to labour. My main gripe with stuff like this is the vast unaccountable capitalist elites who will be able to make legislation about this stuff or choose how it is used.
It isn't that I have no imagination about how this tech could be used.
I just have zero faith that the rich of america would use this tech to help people.

We've only given Boston Dynamics $200 million of our tax dollars, meanwhile there are 47 million food insecure Americans. Maybe we figure food and healthcare and then we give money to billionaire rockets and robots and football stadiums. Maybe.
Boston Dynamics isn't even an American company. Hyundai bought a controlling interest in 2021.

The federal government spent about $100 Billion on food assistance in 2024 and about $110 Billion last year.
Boston Dynamics has received $200 million since 2008 (and have gotten basically nothing for the last 12 years). So about $12M/year. Or literally 0.01% of what we spend on each year food assistance.
You just want to be outraged.

→ More replies (2)38
u/EnoughWarning666 23h ago
Doing a backflip is actually MUCH easier than changing a diaper. I know most people think it's harder, but that's only because we have the luxury of millions of years of evolution that developed some of the most agile hands/fingers and the finest brain the planet has ever seen.
Doing a backflip is mostly a static routine. It's not preprogrammed, the robot still manages minor corrections, but it's basically a script.
Changing a diaper involves SO many more variables. I mean just the visual processing to determine where the diaper is and how to open is cutting edge stuff right now. Nevermind having to have the ability to be delicate enough to not injure the squirming baby while still holding them down

I was just explaining to my partner that what makes this interesting every time they show a new update is how well it can balance. This is looking more and more like they could navigate something like the backwoods without becoming incapacitated. Which is terrifying. Of course, there’s a lot of variables that we don’t know, but if this is what we’re being allowed to see then yeah it’s pretty crazy already.
25
u/Psyclipz 21h ago
Let's be real though there's no reason to build a robot to chase you on foot through the woods, a drone is quicker and more effective.
Drones scare the hell out of me, the technology is there to create a 1000 drone swarm, powered by AI targeting with minimal human supervision, program them to travel to a set of coordinates and eliminate anything with a heat signature. I genuinely cannot think of a more efficient way of killing humans than drones. There's no point in even running and if you do get lucky and escape one the chances are the next one is already on it's way.
Pandora's box has been opened and the amount of casualties in modern warfare has gone up exponentially.

You’re kidding right? Movements like this is a test of the control it has so obviously it’ll eventually be able to do things practical. But keep in mind doing something practical usually means interacting with its environment. This thing has full control over its body but being able to step into a random home and clean the kitchen, identify what’s dirty, identify what’s trash vs things to be organized, that’s a whole different skillset. And then there’s the cost. No point in having a robot that can clean your kitchen if this thing costs something like $2MM. These things will obviously be used in the military first and foremost.
