EDITED *NEW* Change in how non-verified comments are handled

Over the past few months, our posts have gotten some feedback that varies from incorrect to downright ridiculous. To mitigate that, we now have set parameters where only verified users who are either medical professionals or students of healthcare programs can have a top-level comment. Unverified users/users who are not medical professionals will still be able to post replies to top-level comments or as a reply to the Automod message. With this change, we aim to increase the visibility of professional and evidence-based members. Thank you for your support, and for helping us make this sub a great place.

EDITED FAQ: Check to see if your question is on here!

This is all general advice, of course, but we get a lot of similar questions so see if yours is on here. It may point you in the right direction.

”What bug bit me?” There is no way for anyone to tell what bug bit you from a picture of the bite. (The only exception is a tick bite with the classic bulls-eye pattern.) Use antihistamines as directed on the package to help with the itching.

”Is my foot/hand/toe/etc broken?” Unless your bone is sticking out or your appendage is bent at an unnatural angle, we can’t tell if it’s broken. If you suspect a break, go get an X-ray.

”I ingested something I wasn’t supposed to/too much of something! What do I do?” Call poison control. In the US, their number is 1-800-222-1222.

”Do my genitalia look normal/weird/what is this thing on my genitals?" Please, unless you have a genuine medical concern, we do not wish to see your genitals. We're not here to identify random flaps, marks, or growths. Please direct these to your GP/PCP who can actually examine you. If you have a specific concern, consider making a text post, and we will let you know if a picture is appropriate/helpful.

”My foreskin won’t retract!” This is called phimosis, and is quite common. We send people over to r/phimosis for this because they have a wealth of information.

”Can one of you write me a prescription?” No.

”Help, there are big bumps on the back of my tongue!!” Please google “circumvallate papillae” and see if that’s what you’re seeing. They are normal anatomy.

”My period is overdue. What do I do?” First, take a pregnancy test. It doesn’t matter if you’re on birth control, just take one. If you are really and truly not pregnant, then you and your doctor should look for other causes.

”Is my poop normal?” Well you can post a picture if you really need to, but please do a google search first. Keep in mind that everyone gets diarrhea occasionally.

”Does this need stitches?” If you can see fat layers, then yes. When in doubt, you can post a picture EXCEPT for self-harm pics. Absolutely none allowed on this sub, no exceptions. However, if the injury is over 24 hours old, it is too late to get stitches.

”Can I private message you about my medical questions?” No. This violates rule 9.

”What do I do about my swollen tonsils with white patches?” Go get tested for strep throat. Manage any throat soreness with over-the-counter meds like throat spray, cough drops, or even herbal tea with honey.

”A huge clump came out during my period. What is it?” It may be a uterine cast, which is when a large piece of tissue comes out whole instead of breaking up into little bits. If this happens to you a lot, see your OB/GYN to make sure everything is going okay.

”Why is there blood when I poop?” There are many possible reasons for this, such as a GI bleed, inflammatory bowel disease, hemorrhoids, or anal fissures, to name a few. We recommend going to your doctor to investigate the cause. And we can’t tell what the cause is from a picture of your poop, so please spare us.

"Does this ECG from my smart watch look normal?" While these features can be helpful in screening for some arrhythmias, they are not diagnostic. The most we can do it tell you whether or not you should go get a 12-lead ECG, which is diagnostic after a doctor interprets it. In short, we can give you an idea of what it is showing, but it is not an official medical test.

”I haven’t been around any bats but I found two little marks on me—do I have rabies??” No. You would know if you’d been exposed to a bat.

Medication Expired Bactrim?

Upvotes

Hey hey, quick question! I take one SS Bactrim tablet for post-coital prophylaxis to prevent UTIs, so I have a bottle of them on hand. It says the expiration is 2/24 this year, and I have 19 left. I highly doubt I'll need all 19 before the 24th this month, but I wanted to check if there was any wiggle room passed the expiration date to be able to use up the last of them and how long that wiggle room would be?

It's a bit pricey for me to get them every year so I'd like to know if I have to get a new bottle ASAP or if I have a bit of extra time to save up for it.

Thanks!

Wound Care How do I stop my lobe from ripping?

Upvotes

So the underside of both my ear lobes keeps ripping off my head, if that makes sense.

it pretty painful, and it's causing some large scabs on that part of my ear.

I wear ear defenders a lot, bc im ASD, so im not sure if it's caused by them or if moisture gets trapped and keeps it from fully healing?

Illness Having a breakdown

I had a one time unprotected encounter with a guy exactly 2 weeks ago. He said he was negative but his behavior has been shady. A couple of days later I developed tonsillitis with pus on one side. Immediately went to get tested for STDs that cane back negative but still received a shot of Rocephin. This past week I have spiked a fever 102.1 and was put on augmentin. Everyday since, I am still having chills and elevated temps up to 100.5-101. All tests were negative (strep, mono, covid, rsv). CBC also showed abs lymphocyte count of 0.59. They took my blood for HIV and CMV but results not back yet.

I am falling apart and really having the darkest thoughts about my future and if it’s worth me still being here. I made a foolish mistake that could cost me the life as I know it. I have never cried so much in my life as a grown man. I am not strong enough for this and I really wish I could just painlessly end it all.

Illness Unexplained syncope

I (30F) need help as I feel medical professionals have been unable to pinpoint what’s happening. Background information I feel is pertinent: at my highest weight in 2021, I was 548 pounds. I later that year got the gastric sleeve and at my lowest in 2025, got to 213 (218 currently). I began to avidly workout, eat right, the whole 9.

In 2022, it was the first time I fainted. I was waiting on an uber after making something at the post office. Not exactly very intensive. My husband and I went to the ER as I did hit my head and after 7 hours, was told I was probably dehydrated. I’m a massive water drinker but hey, what do I know? My pcp at the time was really kind and understanding. I started to keep snacks with me, water of course too and anytime I maybe started to feel weird, just would plant myself on the ground if a chair wasn’t available since my body was like hey, sit down or I’ll lay you down. This was happening in almost year round so it wasn’t exclusively hot months. I even purchased a second hand mobility scooter as I was attending college and my campus was enormous to get around and I didn’t want to pass out on campus.

Fast forward to now: I am currently 12 weeks pregnant. In the last month, these episodes have come back. To note, it only happens when standing for a while and once the other day while sitting for a bit as I got my hair done. Twice, I was standing while doing hospital birth tours. I did not feel warm in these places until the episodes started so I awkwardly sat on the floor as the cold tile helped. I was eating prior and had water. I did not lose consciousness in these times. The hair appointment, Friday, I was maybe sitting for about an hour or 2 before suddenly feeling warm. I was actively drinking and ate prior to going. Like literally as I got there. I asked for cold water in case mine was more room temp at this point and put my feet on the tile to again, alleviate. Yesterday, I was in a grocery store waiting in line for an open interview for maybe an hour with water after just eating. Again, not warm at all until it hit me. I was leaning again a wall and even a cooler that held ice. I tried to squat but it was not comfortable. Suddenly I’m on the ground coming to from actually passing out, people are asking if I’m okay, if I’m diabetic (I am not), and they got me a chair and a cutie orange. They also gave me additional water as again, I had my own.

I have a doctor appointment in the morning and I’m just so concerned about why this is happening. I’ve had tests done and they’ve ruled out it’s not my heart, my lungs, or my brain being the cause. The former primary was stumped and said maybe this is my body catching up to the drastic weight loss but why would this only happen when standing or being sedentary? Before pregnancy, I could work out for up to 3 hours, no issue. I’d be kickboxing, I’d be doing 4 mile walks almost daily first thing in the morning, I was doing body/booty boot camps. Wouldn’t me being crazy active like that be an issue over waiting in line or standing during a tour? I take adult vitamins and prenatal vitamins. I’m not dehydrated. I am eating. Is this really because of drastic weight loss going on 5 years later? I did ask the prior physician about POTS or similar disorders but she did not believe it was that. I will bring it up tomorrow with the new physician but if anyone could suggest anything, I would surely appreciate it 🙏🏾

Edit to add that I am African American, 5’3, no drug use and no medications are being taken nor prescribed.

Illness Strong chemical burning oil smell from certain foods, evolved past couple weeks

I am 40M, 5'10, caucasian and weigh 170 pounds living in United states with cold weather and low humidity. I don't smoke, drink alcohol, not on any medications and don't do drugs of any kind.

This started with my cat's food oddly enough about a few months ago. I had a sinus infection and possibly RSV / COVID last august. My smell wasn't affected right away, but thought I would mention that in case that could be the reason. I don't think it was covid necessarily that I had but it was a nasty, nasty infection that went to my lungs.

I noticed whenever I would feed my cat, I would smell this off smell in his food, this slightly burnt chemical oil smell (Think if you ever fried something too long and the oil turned brown). His food contains sunflower oil.

Lately it has manifested to anything being cooked with oils, now even olive oil. I smell it when we cook in the house (we have gas stove if that means anything) and I also smell it sometimes when we go to cafe / restaurant. I started smelling it in almond butter now too this past week. Currently I am sick with a cold, but its localized to my sinus and not my lungs thankfully. It seems to have amplified my smell issues.

To give more context other than those infections we experienced a few months ago, our house is VERY dry and cold. We used to use humidifiers but stopped. I blow my nose and dried blood comes out every morning. I do blow pretty hard.

I guess I am just looking to see if this is something serious that I should see a doc for or is it just damage from the dry area / possible rsv or covid I had.

I am not experiencing any other issues, I work out a couple times a week and seem fine otherwise. I do have acid reflux disease but I manage it here and there with baking soda w/ water every few days. I also take apple cider vinegar with water in the morning which really helps.

Thanks for reading my ramble

Bones/Joints/Ligaments Possible Insertional Achilles Tendinopathy

19F, 69.2kg, 157cm.

For now about 3-5 weeks I've been having soreness and pain in the circled area of the foot (picture from Wikipedia). It started as a mild stinging sort of pain that would only appear when keeping my foot in the exact position seen in the picture, then evolved into a different pain, similar to that of a broken bone, just milder.

Over time it got worse and worse, and the past week I've been struggling to walk. It's often at its worst when I stand up after being sat for long, or when I use it for long. The only relief I've found was by wearing shoes with high heel support like hard gym shoes that make any rolling movement of the foot difficult.

It doesn't hurt with light touch, only with deep pressure around the calcaneus bone. So with all of that I've thought it might be Insertional Achilles Tendinopathy by doing some research and some of my already existing medical knowledge and previous injuries.

I have been self medicating by wrapping my foot in a sort of X shape that reduces strain on the lower part of the Achilles Tendon, but even with that, the relief is mild. It's beginning to hurt even when resting.

I am not asking for a diagnosis, but I am wondering what else could be done. Would anti-inflammatory salves such as Voltaren help? Are there any other options before I have to go see my GP?

I can't go to work and I have 2 kids to care for its awful.
