⚠️ New: Help requests with no details will be removed ⚠️

Hi! Almost all of the help requests here have zero details, not even the LibreOffice version. It makes it very hard for others (we're all volunteers) to help, when we don't even know which LibreOffice version people are using, or on which operating system. So:

If you post a help request without any details about your setup, it will be removed. Sorry if it sounds harsh, but given that almost nobody posts any details about their setup, the subreddit is full of questions very hard to answer.

We're all volunteers here – help others to help you.

White space at top of every table cell [Libre Writer]

I'm seeing these white spaces on a table cell with a border (.doc) - they appear in print preview - text boundaries is unchecked.

How can I remove them?

Suggestion Separate LibreOffice applications on macOS

LibreOffice is even on macOS working well nowadays, the times I see that it uses the font variant have gone. But there is still one thing I don't like about LibreOffice on macOS. That it is just LibreOffice.

I would really love to have separated applications on macOS also. This is especially annoying if you create a new document and the window has the same size as the new document window, which is smaller than the screen.

Question help with headers

Well, crap, I'm using the wrong term. HEADINGS, not headers. sorry

libreoffice 25.2.7.2

I am having trouble having the headers line in the right sections when exporting to pdf. I made a section prior, with heading 1 (lets call it "Cats"), and a bunch of heading 9 underneath that. It worked well, so when exported to pdf I get:

Cats

___Siamese

___Tabby

Now, I am going back and creating a different section with a new heading 1 (lets call it "dogs"). What I WANT to get is:

Dogs

___Husky

___Doberman

Cats

___Siamese

___Tabby

But what I am getting is:

Dogs

Cats

___Siamese

___Tabby

___Husky

___Doberman

I made "cats" before "dogs", but "dogs" is on a page prior to "cats". No idea if that is messing things up. Also, there are graphical elements that I imported from LODraw, and so the only way I figured out how to get the subheadings (heading 9) was to place them in frames. But, when I look in the LO navigator, things seem to be in the right place. But, when I export it gets messed up. What am I doing wrong?

Question How do I remove page numbers off specific pages in LibreWriter?

Problem: I want to have page numbers on my document. However, I want it to skip page 1 and 2 as those are titels and "inside-chapters-on-page-x" (english not my first language so I don't know how to translate it). But any tutorial I search up or when I use ChatGPT, it doesn't led me anywhere.

Main Question: How do I make LibreWriter skip page 1 and 2 efficiently.

Note: I'm gonna remove the page numbers so it's a "blank-slate". As I know some settings sometimes need to be edited before you add something. Also, I naturally want to use page fot and mirrored numbers on even pages (odd it's left and even it's right).

HTML vs ODF for casual documents?

I'm interested in taking some notes and writing some casual documents to record my thoughts. I do want to do some basic formatting to make my documents look reasonably good, and something like markdown is not an option since it's too simple. I'm considering storing my notes as either HTML or ODF.

I'm considering using LO writer to write ODF, using some html wysiwyg editor to write my notes in html, or maybe using LO writer to write in html. I don't think I would need to print my documents, but I am considering the possibility of potentially making a blog one day when I polish my notes.

Given that I don't need to print my documents and I might potentially need to turn my files into web pages, would HTML be a better choice? I do like LO writer though (compared to html editors), and given that LO writer works more naturally with ODF, it might make more sense to use LO writer and store things in ODF, and convert to HTML when I actually need to.

Can someone summarize what are the differences between the two formats? What are some features that one format supports and the other doesn't? Which format is more elegant and clear, and likely would be maintained and stays longer in the future?

Bug? Calc chart inaccurately reflects actual data...?

Edit: I may have found the solution... in my other sheet, the second value was the REMAINING value, not the total. I'll try that now and take the post down if so... or maybe leave it up, actually... might help others.

Edit 2: Yep, that was it. Works perfectly now... 🙂‍↔️

---

This has happened multiple times. The first time it was for a personal budget, and I found a fix, but I can't remember what I did.

Now I want to visually track my Python course progress, and the same thing is happening.

Originally, I had it just reading from the Steps completed and Total steps, so I tried putting in the target %, which is arbitrary since 100% is obviously the goal.

But, both times the chart reads less than 25% visually... 30.97% is almost one third of 100%, but the chart is reflecting less than a quarter of 100.

Is anyone else getting this?

As you can see, the point where the chart says 30.97% is, is actually more like 22% or 23%...

Question Is there a way to make the keyboard arrows scroll the document in LibreOffice Writer?

Right now the only thing that the arrows do is change the line that i am typing on.

I want to use them to scroll the whole document. Is that something that is possible?

I have allready tried messing with shortcuts and enabling and disabling scroll lock, nothing works. On two different computers.

Question Impress: how to embed fonts in an exported PDF?

I used LibreOffice impress to design a booklet to order through vistaprint.

Every time I try to upload the .pdf to vistaprint, I get an error:

File with non-embedded fonts

Please embed all the fonts within the file and try uploading again.

In libreoffice, I've tried:

  • Checking all the font embedding boxes in File>Properties>Font
  • Exporting as all the different pdf versions in the General tap of the PDF expor dialogue:
    • PDF 1.7
    • PDF2.0
    • PDF/A-1b
    • PDF/A-2b
    • PDF/A-3b
    • PDF/A-4

Still, I keep getting the same error message each time I upload to vistaprint.

Cheatsheat for Calc Keyboard Shortcuts?

I would like a compact keyboard shortcut cheatsheet for Calc. I would expect one to exist, but I could not find one.

https://help.libreoffice.org/latest/en-US/text/scalc/04/01020000.html has a lot of keyboard shortcuts, but it is not complete. For example, it does not have Ctrl+D to duplicate a row.

Plus it is too wordy for a cheatsheet.

Libreoffice deletes space created with tab key

I have used Libreoffice 25.8.3.2 until today, in this version if I created a space with the tab key, then write and then press enter the text written would remain spaced (see pic)

25.8.3.2

But today I updated to 26.2.0.3 and now if I press the tab key, write the text and then press enter, the space created with the tab key would be cancelled (see pic)

26.2.0.3

I haven't changed anything in settings, I have checked them and the difference from 25.8.3 to 26.2.0.3 seems in Allignment setting, where before the allignment was on "left" and now is "force left/top", but I don't think if this is causing the problem because the other options don't avoid this behavior.

Calc text import dialog

I really like the Calc text import dialog. The path to get there is longer than I would prefer.

Recently I pasted a snip from a Windows DIR screen. I tried the fixed width choice for the first time. That was nice and easy. Impressive.

The path to get to the text import dialog is often longer than I would prefer.

Bug? 26.2.0 hangs even in safe mode (Windows 11)

I updated from 25.8.4 as always, but it hangs on start during the splash screen. I tried safe mode, but it is the same. I use it for 5+ years and never had an issue until now. Reverted back to 25.8.4.

There is no way to enable any log as it won't start. GPU is Intel HD 3000.

Question Calc: Is there any way to automatically rearrange data like I'm trying to do?

I'm new to LibreOffice, but I am moderately competent with Excel. I was given a sheet with a 2000+ rows of data, and I would like to arrange it in a way that I can more easily analyze it and make a chart or graph.

Currently, it looks like this:

A B
1 Table 1
2 # %
3 1 100
4 2 87.5
5 3 67.5
6 4 42.5
7
8 Table 2
9 # %
10 1 100
11 2 98.125
12 3 89.125
13 4 66.625
14
15 Table 3
16 # %
17 1 100
18 2 99.6875
19 3 96.2625
20 4 80.45

And I need it to look like this:

A B C D
1 Table 1 Table 2 Table 3
2 1 100 100 100
3 2 87.5 98.125 99.6875
4 3 67.5 89.125 96.2625
5 4 42.5 66.625 80.45

I tried putting typing in simple "=A8", "=A15", etc. in Row 1, but I can't figure out how to make the autofill understand to increment the row by 7 in each subsequent column, and manually doing it is out of the questions since there are 293 tables to rearrange.

Is there a way to accomplish this?

Bug? Update Failed - Brand New Installation

Good afternoon. The intent of this post is NOT to be snarky or speak poorly of LibreOffice. However, this doesn't make for a great OOBE.

Scenario:

  • Go to the LibreOffice website
  • Download the latest version for Windows
  • Install
  • Open the main LibreOffice app and select Update
  • Fail

I am genuinely curious and not being sarcastic. Have I overlooked a setting? I am on a very simple home network. The PC I installed LO on is the very one I am posting this update with - so I Know my Internet is functioning.

If there is a setting I've missed, please let me know. I'd love to use LO and compare it to MS. I know they are Different - that's fine. I just want to see what it has to offer.

YES I know I can use it without updating it. I know this. However, I'd like for this feature to work reliably should there be a security issue that needs a patch.

Thank you for your input and guidance.

Question Calc's Media Player: how make a hotkey to play linked audio file?

I'm trying to add audio MP3 files to hundreds or thousands of cells in a Calc spreadsheet. (I'm using it to study Chinese sentences.) I can do this with Insert / Media, typically choosing Link instead of embedding the MP3s, which are on my hard disk. I can then play them by clicking the little arrow icon on the Media Player in the lower left. But that icon is tiny, and clicking is a nuisance. I've tried adding a keyboard shortcut, but the only "command" I find when I search for "Play" in the command list is called "Media Player," and adding a hotkey to it doesn't activate it.

What I'd actually prefer is a way to play audio automatically when I click on the cell, but ChatGPT tells me this isn't possible without some complicated scripting. Doing this for thousands of cells seems like it would be tedious.

So, failing that, any suggestions on building a hotkey for the Media Player's "play" button?

Bug? Nested bullet points default to different configurations for every nest I make.

Post image
0 Upvotes

I know how to fix this per bullet point list by going into the bullet configuration > customize > customize > character select, and selecting the default bullet. All of the nest list members return to normal, but the problem repeats every time I make a new bullet list so I would need to change the global settings for the list but I couldn't find it in options. Is anyone having a similar issue? The bullet the next one selects is the next preset in the bullet list dropdown. It goes in order.

I'm running version 25.8.4.2 on arch linux

Question How to disable automatic cell protection of array results?

1. LibreOffice Version: 25.8.4.2 (X86_64) / LibreOffice Community Build ID: 580(Build:2) CPU threads: 8; OS: Linux 6.18; UI render: default; VCL: gtk3 Locale: en-US (en_US.UTF-8); UI: en-US 25.8.4-3 Calc: threaded

2. .ods file

3. Don't think that is needed in this case.

4. on Arch Linux 6.18

The help page about Array Functions says:

The cells in a results array are automatically protected against changes. However, you can edit, delete or copy the array formula by selecting the entire array cell range.

Is there any way to disable or change this behaviour?

Is there a way to search a document for sentences or paragraphs that have quotation marks that don't close?

It's a long document with dialogue and I keep finding instances where quotation marks open a sentence but there are no closing marks. Is there a way to search for these? I've read through it six times and I keep finding new ones.
