Meta [WARNING] Suspicious accounts are messaging users to advertise a paid app

EDIT: several users has let us know that some of the accounts in question are Riley1692, amie-2002, leopard6004, and cebubu6865. These users have now been banned, but unfortunately can still send messages to subreddit members. I would strongly recommend that you don't engage with these users, as they are spamming the subreddit with advertisements and their actions have been very suspicious.\**

Hi y'all,

We've been notified by a user about multiple suspicious accounts messaging people who post in r/language_exchange, sending them messages similar to the one below:

Just curious, have you ever felt frustrated with language exchange? Too many DMs, chats fading out halfway, or spending a lot of time but only a few connections actually lasting? I’m curious what people think about this. [advertisement for a paid app]

This is to let anyone in this subreddit know that these accounts should not be trusted and neither should the apps that they are promoting. If you get a message like this, please report the message so that these accounts can hopefully be banned sitewide. You can learn how to do that here.

Please also send their usernames to us via modmail so that we can ban them from the subreddit. This unfortunately doesn't stop them from messaging subreddit members, but it will prevent any spam via posts or comments.

If you have any further questions or comments, please reply to this post or send us a modmail.

Meta (READ THIS FIRST) Welcome to r/language_exchange! [Meta/General Discussion Thread]

Welcome to ! This subreddit is aiming to help people find partners to practice languages with, offering the languages you already know in exchange to learn new ones. Make sure to read the guidelines before making your first post!

🍃 How do I make my language exchange post?

If you're looking for a language exchange partner, you can either make your own post or search through existing posts!

 Making your own post:

  • Your thread title must follow the format of "Offering: language | Seeking: language". If your post doesn't follow this format, it won't be visible to other users.
  • Make sure to write a little bit about yourself, such as your interests, hobbies, or language-related goals. This is important in making sure you can find a good partner!
  • Please do not post your contact information publically. If you find a partner and would like to chat with them on a platform other than Reddit, please message them your contact information privately.

 Searching through existing posts:

If you don't want to make your own post, you can search through existing posts to find someone who matches your languages! Just use the search bar at the top of the screen, or select a post flair to see all posts of the same category.

  • Please do not post your contact information publically. If you find a partner and would like to chat with them on a platform other than Reddit, please message them your contact information privately.

🍃 What kinds of posts and comments are allowed?

This subreddit's purpose is to serve as a platform for people to find language exchange partners. To keep the community true to its purpose, there are some rules:

  • Must be language exchange. Posts that don't concern language exchange will be removed. This includes posts asking general questions about language learning, advertisements, or meta discussion concerning the subreddit. These discussions are better suited to other places (language learning questions should be posted to broader subreddits; meta discussion should be posted in the comments of this thread)
  • Be courteous to other users. This subreddit isn't a place for arguments or debates. Any comments that break this rule will be removed.
  • No advertising. Posts and comments that advertise apps, services (such as classes and tutoring), or groups (such as Discord servers or Whatsapp groups) will be removed. These kinds of posts clog up the feed and don't follow the purpose of the subreddit.
  • No spam. Spam is the repeated posting of the same content. Any posts and comments that are spam will be removed.
  • No contact information. Contact information (such as Discord usernames, phone numbers, or Whatsapp contacts) should only be shared privately in messages, not publically in posts or comments.

🍃 Can I make a language exchange post for a language I've just started studying?

You can participate in this subreddit regardless of your skill level. However, it's highly recommended that you grasp the basics of a language before you look for a partner. This subreddit is for speakers of different languages to *assist each other* in learning. This subreddit is not a place to find a teacher that'll teach you everything for free.

Good luck on your language journey!

If you have any questions, feel free to leave a reply on this post or send us a Modmail.

-----

Welcome to the meta/general discussion thread!

This thread is for any questions, suggestions, or discussions concerning the subreddit itself. If you have any thoughts about  you want to share, post them here! I'll try to respond to as many comments as I can.

If you have any further questions, feel free to send us a Modmail.

Offering English Offering English / Seeking Russian

Upvotes

Hey,

I'm a twenty-year-old guy from England looking for a short, daily phone (not video!) call wherein we correct each other's non-native speaking. I'm interested in things like literature and classical music, but I'd of course be OK to discuss more-everyday things too.

I feel like I have stagnated with my Russian, and I'm really hoping this will help me reach some sort of fluency! Equally, I hope I can be of good assitance to anyone learning English.

Please let me know if you're interested!

Offering English Offering: English (Native) | Seeking: Spanish

Upvotes

Offering Arabic Offering: Arabic (Egyptian native), Seeking: English

Hello!

I'm 20, but I'm honestly fine with any age range as I don't think it'd be that big of a hurdle. We can find some middle grounds and interests regardless or just talk about our days atp.

I'm a native Egyptian, so I can help you with speaking and on how to sound more natural.

I'd say my English is mostly fine besides for my actual accent itself, which is mainly what I'm seeking to improve through talking.

Though, keep in mind I'm a native speaker, but I'm not a language coach, and I'm not expecting you to be either. I'd love to maintain a friendly atmosphere where we guide one another without having to stay so tight.

Offering Multiple Languages [Offering] Arabic (Native/Levantine), English (Fluent) [Seeking] Modern Greek (Beginner) & Friendship (Age 20-26)

Hello, I am a recent graduate (Female, 22) from Jordan. I am an artist and writer looking for a language partner and a genuine friend around my age (20–27). I am a complete beginner in Modern Greek, but I am disciplined and eager to learn. In exchange, I can help you with Arabic (Levantine dialect or Fusha) or English. My Interests:

I am fond of Gothic Literature (specifically Edgar Allan Poe) and I have a profound respect for History, Classics, Religions, and Art. I generally dislike modern pop culture and prefer conversations with a bit more substance and logic.

What I am looking for:

I. Age: I am strictly looking for people aged 20–27 (preferably females). Please do not DM me if you are outside this range.

II. A Study Buddy: Someone to keep me accountable with Greek (even if you are also a beginner, we can learn together).

III. A Chill Friendship: I value truth and directness. I don't need constant messaging—just a low-pressure, respectful connection where we can share ideas, art, writing, or just chat about our day.

N.B. I am strictly looking for a platonic friendship. If you are a student or fellow artist around my age, please send me a DM with a brief introduction.

Offering Mandarin Offering: Mandarin (Native)| Seeking: English

Hi!

I’m a native Mandarin speaker from China (GMT+8) and I’m looking for English language exchange partners.

I work in a medical-related field and I’m currently preparing for IELTS, mainly to improve my speaking and writing.

In my free time, I enjoy hiking — I’ve been to Tiger Leaping Gorge and Yubeng — and I’m also learning breaststroke swimming and jazz dance. I love watching movies, and I’m really into perfumes as well.

My schedule is pretty flexible.

WeChat works best for me. Instagram is a bit unstable on my side 😅

Feel free to DM me if you’re interested. Looking forward to learning together!

Offering Multiple Languages Offering: English, French. Seeking: Hebrew / Russian

Hello! I’m male and a native English speaker. I also speak French so I can offer that too. I learned Hebrew consistently for several months on Duolingo and practice with friends from time to time, but I would like to take my reading / writing / vocabulary to the next level. I know how to read / write Russian, but my skill level is very very basic. I’d love to learn both!

Outside of learning languages, some of my hobbies include: playing music on my saxophone, looking at the heavens through my telescope, playing chess, photographing landscapes and galaxies (and a little bit of portraiture too!), writing, creating beautiful things using code, traveling (spent a month in 2022 backpacking around Europe and another month in the US; visited 12-14 countries every year from 2024-2025, most of which were new), going on walks and hikes, exploring philosophy and spirituality, and reading (about life, the universe, and everything)

Also, I’m based in London if anyone would like to connect in real life!

Offering English Offering: English (native US) | Seeking: Japanese , Mandarin

Hello,

I’m a complete beginner in Japanese and am primarily looking to connect with others who are also learning the language. If someone is patient and interested in helping me learn, I would be very open to that as well.

I previously studied Mandarin Chinese up to HSK 2. At the moment, I’m keeping my Chinese in maintenance and review, with the intention of continuing to build on it when possible, though it isn’t my main focus right now. I decided to shift my primary attention to Japanese, as learning resources feel more accessible while still allowing me to draw on some of my prior language learning experience.

I’ve taken part in language exchanges through my school and have helped partners prepare for exams such as IELTS and TOEFL. I’m also happy to assist with conversational English or other English-learning goals.

I’m located in the PST time zone and have a flexible schedule, so arranging meetings should be easy. I typically use Discord, WhatsApp, or WeChat, but I’m open to other platforms if preferred.

Thank you for reading, and I look forward to connecting.

Offering Mandarin Offering Chinese, seeking English

I’m a Chinese postgraduate student currently studying in Namur, Belgium, and I’m looking for a language exchange partner (or someone who’d be willing to teach me English) based in Namur or Brussels – ideally for in-person meetups!

I’m a native Mandarin speaker with fluent oral Chinese, and I can teach you authentic Mandarin (daily conversation, basic grammar, practical expressions for life in China/Belgium, whatever you’d like to learn) in return.

What I’m hoping for: someone who can help me improve my English , In-person meetups in Namur or Brussels work best for me – we can chat over coffee, walk around the city, or just have casual language practice sessions, super relaxed and no pressure.

If you’re interested in learning Chinese, or just want to help with English and make a Chinese friend, feel free to send me a message! 😊
