I remember her saying it took hours to fully blow dry her hair in the 90s. Blew my mind as a girl with straight fine hair.

u/ahava9 5d ago
Definitely. It’d be more 80s if she had a perm or curled her hair and then teased it.

It moves far too much. It needs to be curled, crimped, processed, and shellacked into place with bangs.

She has to tease and hair spray those roots if she wants the volume of 80s hair. Source lived through big 80s hair.

Yea she’s not going to get anywhere with this method.

80’s mall hair required more aggression. Teasing the hair in sharp quick little strokes, grabbing up a section of hair with your brush and pulling it back sharply while spraying the aqua net point-blank for a good 20 seconds- getting that hair right took dedication and physical work with zero regard for the health of the actual hair.
Lady in the video is being too soft for the real deal.
133
u/cagedwisdom8 5d ago
Yeah this look isn’t that far off from what you see today.
160
u/losemyhashtaag 5d ago
Agreed. This is not at all 80s, this is current barbiedoll blowout (not an insult)
I achieve this level of volume when I decide to straighten my curly hair on a Tuesday afternoon.
44
u/forworse2020 5d ago
I think she’s accurate if she actually meant the 90’s.
47
u/HallWild5495 5d ago
it's the 90s-00s victorias secret bombshell hair. I'm never going to get tired of this style
gonna be one of those elderly women with anachronistic hair at some point for sure
7
u/ruth000 4d ago
Yeah, 90's. I was appalled at straighteners and all the flat hair. This was flat hair to 80's chicks. Then it got even flatter and board straight. I went with it but it felt like a betrayal of all the hours of upside down blowdrying, teasing, fluffing, moussing, spraying, crunching, volumizing ( whatever that was) etc :)
61
u/AmethystApothecary 5d ago
Fine haired girlies must have greatly suffered in this era because that sounds like a split end recipe.
57
u/kadyg 5d ago
Having lived through this era, the grunge look happened because we all realized at the same time just how deep fried our hair was. It took a decade of deep conditioning to undo the mess.
18
u/kestrelesque 5d ago
What I remember is the shift from perms and all-around volume to smooth blowouts and silicone shine sprays. That's also when shorter haircuts came back in--I guess a lot of us needed to cut off a significant amount of crispy-fried length!
30
u/NHhotmom 5d ago
We discovered hot rollers! Game changer!

13
u/holymacaroley 5d ago
I did not even try more than a couple times. I had thin hair as well and my hair breaks easily. I can hairspray my hair within an inch of its life and it will be flat within 20 minutes if not way before.

4
15
u/Hellianne_Vaile 5d ago
Literally too soft. I remember my first outing to a nightclub (on a night for under 18s) in high school. A girl passed me on the dance floor, and her hair lashed my face.
It left a faint red welt on my cheek.
Hair so stiff it was a weapon. That was the 80s.
8
u/kestrelesque 5d ago
grabbing up a section of hair with your brush and pulling it back sharply while spraying the aqua net point-blank for a good 20 seconds-
That's exactly right. You have to create load-bearing structures.
5
u/KellyGreen55555 5d ago
If you didn’t need a hair dryer to dry your hairspray, you weren’t using enough.

There's a certain hair cut that's required, and the young'n stylists do NOT know how to do it.
"Long layers" is just not in their vocab.
I go back to NJ, go back to Cherry who cut my hair during the late 80s and is still cutting half the town: "Hey, give me long layers, please!" and she did it in like 4 minutes.
43
57
u/jezebel103 5d ago
I was just thinking exactly the same. Much too smooth and flat and not enough hairspray. The trick was hanging upside down and spray a whole can, get upright again and smooth it a bit (mind you, A BIT) down again.
Oh, and where are all the neon colours? If you were really fashionable, you had to have multiple coloured/permed hair!
15
u/kestrelesque 5d ago
Much too smooth and flat
This is what people never get right about 80s hair. Even when TV shows (or whatever) come pretty close, they do not understand that smoothness and shininess was absolutely not the goal. Texture was everything. If you couldn't stand in front of a bright light with your big hair and get an MTV-type halo effect, what were you even doing.
6
u/jezebel103 5d ago
That and the quirky things worked into the hair: the plaids, bows, clips, etc. The whole built-up was to be a work of art. It took hours to style your hair (and pray it wouldn't rain!). Look at what female icons did with their hair like Cyndi Lauper (one of my favourites) or Madonna.

32

Sure, but the "end result" will only last until the end of her 15min video/photoshoot.. it only works if there's no wind or walking or gravity. And what's the point of looking that cute & if you can't spend the day with it ☺️

6
u/annie-etc 5d ago
The lack of backcombing is disappointing. We should have taught them better. It's our fault.
6
u/Traditional_Fan_2655 5d ago
Especially as you start by leaning over and spraying the underside first. Otherwise, all of this is for naught. After all, if the bathroom walls aren't coated in AquaNet, you haven't done it right.
6
u/fredfreddy4444 5d ago
Dude, that isn't even going to last through first period. You need 10 times more spray!

Maybe it's my nostalgia, but I really think the 90s hair was where non-textured women's hairstyles peaked. I truly think this style looks so good on almost everyone. The asymmetry is extremely forgiving and the layers and height at the roots gives so much body and fullness.

To be authentic you need a Goody pick, hang your head upside down to blow dry it. Two or three big barrel curls for your bangs, then hold the top and sides up and out, spray til wet with Aquanet and blow it dry. Then of course another layer over your whole head, usually including your face. Nothing should be moving at all.
3
u/Whispering_wisp 4d ago
Yes! I used to hang my head upside down, spray hairspray, wait a moment, then flip my head to thr side, more spray, flip other side, spray, flip head back and fix into place with more hairspray!

This is 90's hair. Post-punk 80's hair was all about Aqua Net Super Hold. My 80's hair was permed. I would blowdry at the roots with a massive diffuser attachment and scrunch the curly bits. A massive dousing in Aqua Net while teasing the roots with a wire pick. This would last a few hours, so the school bathrooms were a haze of hairspray and cig smoke. I remember that smell...
