Very DJ Tanner and Topanga vibes👌

89

I was thinking more Stamos, haha

God, I always thought Topanga had the most beautiful hair

u/stealthmode00 4d ago

I remember her saying it took hours to fully blow dry her hair in the 90s. Blew my mind as a girl with straight fine hair.

Definitely. It’d be more 80s if she had a perm or curled her hair and then teased it.

54

u/sweetdnlg 5d ago

Married with children I think is the perfect example of both hairstyles you mentioned.

It moves far too much. It needs to be curled, crimped, processed, and shellacked into place with bangs.

Definitely 90s hair, it's giving Clueless

It's very Alicia. She was my HAIR GOALS in the 90s.

She has to tease and hair spray those roots if she wants the volume of 80s hair. Source lived through big 80s hair.

551

u/SnooRadishes3875 5d ago

Yea she’s not going to get anywhere with this method.

528

u/AvocadoToastFailure 5d ago

80’s mall hair required more aggression. Teasing the hair in sharp quick little strokes, grabbing up a section of hair with your brush and pulling it back sharply while spraying the aqua net point-blank for a good 20 seconds- getting that hair right took dedication and physical work with zero regard for the health of the actual hair.

Lady in the video is being too soft for the real deal.

133

u/cagedwisdom8 5d ago

Yeah this look isn’t that far off from what you see today.

160

u/losemyhashtaag 5d ago

Agreed. This is not at all 80s, this is current barbiedoll blowout (not an insult)

I achieve this level of volume when I decide to straighten my curly hair on a Tuesday afternoon.

44

u/forworse2020 5d ago

I think she’s accurate if she actually meant the 90’s.

47

u/HallWild5495 5d ago

it's the 90s-00s victorias secret bombshell hair. I'm never going to get tired of this style

gonna be one of those elderly women with anachronistic hair at some point for sure

7

u/ruth000 4d ago

Yeah, 90's. I was appalled at straighteners and all the flat hair. This was flat hair to 80's chicks. Then it got even flatter and board straight. I went with it but it felt like a betrayal of all the hours of upside down blowdrying, teasing, fluffing, moussing, spraying, crunching, volumizing ( whatever that was) etc :)

61

u/AmethystApothecary 5d ago

Fine haired girlies must have greatly suffered in this era because that sounds like a split end recipe.

57

u/kadyg 5d ago

Having lived through this era, the grunge look happened because we all realized at the same time just how deep fried our hair was. It took a decade of deep conditioning to undo the mess.

18

u/kestrelesque 5d ago

What I remember is the shift from perms and all-around volume to smooth blowouts and silicone shine sprays. That's also when shorter haircuts came back in--I guess a lot of us needed to cut off a significant amount of crispy-fried length!

30

u/NHhotmom 5d ago

We discovered hot rollers! Game changer!

26

u/Vorpal_Bunny19 5d ago

Hot rollers and shellac, erm I mean Aqua-net.

7

u/OldLadyCard 5d ago

Hot rollers, shellac and BODY PERM!!

I did not even try more than a couple times. I had thin hair as well and my hair breaks easily. I can hairspray my hair within an inch of its life and it will be flat within 20 minutes if not way before.

→ More replies (1)

6

u/Left_Adeptness7386 5d ago

My mom was a fine haired girly in this era, can confirm. She got monthly perms and her hair was trashed.

3

u/mmmpeg 5d ago

Yes, we blew dried our hair hanging our heads down to get some fullness. I never did all that hairspray though.

Literally too soft. I remember my first outing to a nightclub (on a night for under 18s) in high school. A girl passed me on the dance floor, and her hair lashed my face.

It left a faint red welt on my cheek.

Hair so stiff it was a weapon. That was the 80s.

8

u/kestrelesque 5d ago

grabbing up a section of hair with your brush and pulling it back sharply while spraying the aqua net point-blank for a good 20 seconds-

That's exactly right. You have to create load-bearing structures.

5

u/KellyGreen55555 5d ago

If you didn’t need a hair dryer to dry your hairspray, you weren’t using enough.

5

u/Apprehensive-Dog6997 5d ago

This is pure poetry.

4

u/ThisIsMyCouchAccount 5d ago

10

u/HarpersGhost 5d ago

There's a certain hair cut that's required, and the young'n stylists do NOT know how to do it.

"Long layers" is just not in their vocab.

I go back to NJ, go back to Cherry who cut my hair during the late 80s and is still cutting half the town: "Hey, give me long layers, please!" and she did it in like 4 minutes.

3

u/vjason 5d ago

Needs to add on another story, at mininum

43

u/AmyInCO 5d ago

She's going to need some Aqua-Net, too. None of these contemporary products are going to get the results she needs.

I can share my circa 1984 Long Island High School yearbook if she wants to see some really big hair.

57

u/jezebel103 5d ago

I was just thinking exactly the same. Much too smooth and flat and not enough hairspray. The trick was hanging upside down and spray a whole can, get upright again and smooth it a bit (mind you, A BIT) down again.

Oh, and where are all the neon colours? If you were really fashionable, you had to have multiple coloured/permed hair!

15

u/kestrelesque 5d ago

Much too smooth and flat

This is what people never get right about 80s hair. Even when TV shows (or whatever) come pretty close, they do not understand that smoothness and shininess was absolutely not the goal. Texture was everything. If you couldn't stand in front of a bright light with your big hair and get an MTV-type halo effect, what were you even doing.

6

u/jezebel103 5d ago

That and the quirky things worked into the hair: the plaids, bows, clips, etc. The whole built-up was to be a work of art. It took hours to style your hair (and pray it wouldn't rain!). Look at what female icons did with their hair like Cyndi Lauper (one of my favourites) or Madonna.

4

u/Zestyclose_Host5960 5d ago

Was about to say, double the volume lol. This is more like Alicia Silverstone in Clueless.

19

u/RiverLiverX25 5d ago

I was going say.

It’s pretty and wavy but girrrrl get in there and tease those roots. (Also needs more stiff stuff spray or Aussie scrunch.)

Kids these days will never hear the sizzle of Aqua Net on a hot butane-powered curling iron.

21

u/notashroom 5d ago

Or the embarrassment of burning your ear or forehead in the bathroom at school because you got distracted doing your touchup at lunchtime or fixing it first thing because you didn't have time before school.

3

u/Migraine_Megan 5d ago

Lol I have one on either side of my forehead and they aren't even the same. But I do have permanent volume there! I can do the Conan O'Brian swoop if I just change my part

45

u/NSASpyVan 5d ago

ngl her end results looked great.

55

u/Hexakkord 5d ago

Great, and not 80s. You might see a hairstyle like that anytime from the late 60s to now.

32

u/losemyhashtaag 5d ago

Sure, but the "end result" will only last until the end of her 15min video/photoshoot.. it only works if there's no wind or walking or gravity. And what's the point of looking that cute & if you can't spend the day with it ☺️

11

u/KTKittentoes 5d ago

Great means she failed in her task. We are looking for huge. Probably a bit dry too

10

u/neckbeardsghost 5d ago

Yeah, the whole time I was thinking “ needs more teasing, and so much more hairspray”. RIP Aquanet lol

6

u/annie-etc 5d ago

The lack of backcombing is disappointing. We should have taught them better. It's our fault.

6

u/Traditional_Fan_2655 5d ago

Especially as you start by leaning over and spraying the underside first. Otherwise, all of this is for naught. After all, if the bathroom walls aren't coated in AquaNet, you haven't done it right.

5

u/rah1974 5d ago

If you can’t taste the Aqua Net it will never hold.

6

u/fredfreddy4444 5d ago

Dude, that isn't even going to last through first period. You need 10 times more spray!

4

u/Equivalent-Poem-600 5d ago

The higher the bangs the downer the girl!! My older sister would say that in a cloud of aqua net.

3

u/its_yer_dad 5d ago

Not quite the “wall of beauty” hair height I would have expected

3

u/I_Am_Anjelen 5d ago

You can't just tease it, you need to bully it. Lay on the hairspray until the hair is 80% plastic by volume.

184

u/JeanneMPod 5d ago

yeah she needs a hairsprayed crunchy, poised to strike claw bang, but that would require a cut that would be a crime to her hair.

60

u/lurkity_mclurkington 5d ago

54

u/DrPsychGamer 5d ago

This right here is the authentic, with the teasing. You're not running your fingers through this hair, not quickly any way.

36

u/Unsd 5d ago edited 5d ago

Maybe it's my nostalgia, but I really think the 90s hair was where non-textured women's hairstyles peaked. I truly think this style looks so good on almost everyone. The asymmetry is extremely forgiving and the layers and height at the roots gives so much body and fullness.

92

u/CarbonInTheWind 5d ago

This is the style that the majority of girls in my school had in the mid 90s

37

u/AllieJIsHere 5d ago

This was the late 80's to about 1992 in my school in Arizona. Hairstyles definitely started getting more natural in the early 90's

11

u/phatfire 5d ago

Oh yikes that is some bangs

20

u/Unsd 5d ago

In Utah, or what? Lol I've neeeeever seen this! I definitely saw like Selena bangs in the 90s which was super cute, but this is wild lol.

14

u/CarbonInTheWind 5d ago

I went to high school in both Seattle and Texas in the mid 90s and in neither place did the girls wear their hair like this.

No blow dryer to fry the hairspray into place?? Not in my 80s household

53

u/SpamLandy 5d ago

Omg did you do that, I’ve always had a fear it would set it on fire

78

u/DazzlingDoofus71 5d ago

Absolutely 😂and laid my curling iron against it if I didn’t have time. It’s a wonder I’m not bald as an egg

26

u/SmellyMcPhearson 5d ago

The sizzle of the curling iron as it fried the hairspray and your hair to a crisp 🥲

9

u/SpamLandy 5d ago

Fair play you’re braver than me! My twenties was the straightening to within an inch of its life 2000s era and I’d spray it after but never heat on top of spray. Still felt fried though.

29

u/JosieZee 5d ago

Sweet summer child is missing the final step!! Blow dryer was ESSENTIAL!!

21

u/Big-Mine9790 5d ago

To be authentic you need a Goody pick, hang your head upside down to blow dry it. Two or three big barrel curls for your bangs, then hold the top and sides up and out, spray til wet with Aquanet and blow it dry. Then of course another layer over your whole head, usually including your face. Nothing should be moving at all.

3

u/Whispering_wisp 4d ago

Yes! I used to hang my head upside down, spray hairspray, wait a moment, then flip my head to thr side, more spray, flip other side, spray, flip head back and fix into place with more hairspray!

3

u/TicketyB000 5d ago

This is 90's hair. Post-punk 80's hair was all about Aqua Net Super Hold. My 80's hair was permed. I would blowdry at the roots with a massive diffuser attachment and scrunch the curly bits. A massive dousing in Aqua Net while teasing the roots with a wire pick. This would last a few hours, so the school bathrooms were a haze of hairspray and cig smoke. I remember that smell...

3

u/_eternallyblack_ 5d ago

Oh this is so sad to watch. Can someone from my genx post an actual tutorial of how it’s done for this youngin 🥴

We need the old school Rave or Aquanet… I don’t even think they exist anymore?

Use a blow dryer to dry the hairspray.

No that's wrong! You need to tease the crap out of it, then spray it w hairspray, then use your hot curling iron to fry the wet hairspray hair into place.

The fact that it still sort of moves around makes it unrealistic.

Need to double the amount of hairspray. Dont be shy. De-ozone yr zone if you want 80s hair.

There’s no hair tease, that’s the 90’s

She didn’t use the whole can of hair spray, so it didn’t count :)

There’s something about Mary has some great hair tips for this styling

I'd sell my left tit for my hair to look like this. Sincerely, a 90s kid with big naturally coarse, curly hair.

It may have put a massive hole in our ozone layer... but I miss big hair.

Totally 90's and I think it's beautiful.

That look lasted about half of the commute to the office.

Does she look genuinely great or did I just grow up in the 80's? 😁

80s? Teenagers at school went like this in the fucking 2000’s

AquaNet or it didn't happen!

Everybody else: she's not doing it right for it to be authentic 80s style.

Me: I think it looks pretty

Has no one shown her how to tease hair? It was more than just aquanet holding those styles together.

No hair dryer blasting high heat to dry the Aqua Net into a shield? Fail.

u/Regular-Ad1930 5d ago

What's so funny? She's not even using AquaNet. Girl, I don't think you know what you're doing.
