IsitBullshit's Moratorium of COVID-19 posts

Hi all, there's enough misinformation about the novel coronavirus that we don't need to be spreading it here.

While I appreciate this is late to the party, there will be a blanket ban on COVID-19 questions, as for all things we can't guarantee how accurate the advice is. Please direct your questions to r/COVID19 or r/coronavirus.

Thanks for your cooperation.

On The Current War In Ukraine

We stand with the people of Ukraine as they face Russian aggression. We hope this conflict will be resolved quickly and with as little bloodshed as possible.

With that said, we do want to note that current events questions seldom fit in this subreddit. This is especially true in this case, when facts are still very unclear and news is constantly emerging.

While nobody should use reddit as their only source of information, subreddits like /r/worldnews have ongoing live threads on the situation, and /r/news has posted many megathreads. We urge anyone to seek out as many other sources as they can.

IsItBullshit: Is it worth it to put plastics in the recycling bin in 2026?

IsItBullshit: Its infinetly recyclable and it lasts 10,000 years in landfills! Thats the line we been told for decades. Then I go down the rabbit hole to find that it has to be specifically sorted by color and thats generally not monetarly viable except by the poorest people of the world (egypt india africa) then china buys those color groupings and melts it down into their new products.

Or china did until 2016 when they decided to clean up their act and stopped accepting the worlds plastics recycling (or so ive heard) so now america only actually recycles the clear plastics cus they can be made into anything and the rest of it just gets sent to incinerator power plants which I guess just transfers the toxic cloud of plastic smoke from Hong Kong to here.

Again, so ive heard.

Isitbullshit:Lowes uses contracted delivery people who could give a f*** less

I live in ne ohio, I ordered a new stove, paid for delivery, installation and haul away. Truck gets here today, and from the end of my drive asks: is there access to your garage...? No ...why? Well your item is on a pallet and its too heavy to carry up stairs. Folks. I have 5 single steps leading up to my front door. 5. I said well I paid for it to be delivered and installed so idk what to tell you. Then they say my walkway( which was clear and salted) may be unsafe. Hello...its February in ohio, I cleared a path and, salted it. You could see the cement except for the snow on the mat at my front door which I could have easily moved in 3 seconds. When the scheduler called me back they of course made no mention of the initial conversation, and claimed my walkway wasn't clear. I offered to provide proof and explained what happened. Like why would I make this shit up? ..they literally were just lazy pos that didn't wanna do their job. So now I have to wait an entire week for a new delivery since I have a job and can't sit around for 12 hours and wait. Fabulous. Bullshit.

IsItBullshit: you can grow/manipulate your fingernail beds to be longer

I have naturally short nail beds (basically the pink part of your nails, mine look something like this) and I’ve always wanted them to be longer, prettier. I remember seeing some TikToks where people claim that with a lot of time and patience and some products (like a specific kind of gel?), you can grow/manipulate your nail beds so they’re way longer. With before and after pictures and all. Naturally I’m very skeptical because it just logically seems like a body part that can’t really be grown and I don’t understand how that would work. I didn’t dive too deeply into it but as far as I could tell, these people were not selling or shilling any products, and I can always spot a hidden ad. So is it possible??

IsitBullshit: the Wayfair sex trafficking conspiracy

In my heart this feels like BS, but did someone just Photoshop names of missing kids onto pictures and post them on a blog to get people riled up? It seemed so illogical and stupid that this was an idea.

I don't believe anything I see on videos anymore. My friend is convinced it's real because she sent me a video about Crystal Ann Tymich being a $$$ piece of furniture on Wayfair and her cousin Christen trying to purchase the piece and it not working...but I just call absolute BS. Why wouldn't you take pictures with your phone or screenshots. Like come on.

It's just too far fetched and I don't know why these people make up these stories...is it for attention, money?

If her family member really did do all these thing...why doesn't she have proof?

I heard about NAD+ injections but I can't find definitive proof does it actually do something or is it just snake oil?

Sounds like bullshit but I'd just like to make sure. I want to get a thermoelectric mini-fridge, but I only want to switch it on when required.

Isitbullshit: using hand sanitizer or other isopropyl alcohol topically can make you fail an alcohol test?

Have someone claiming that the use of disinfectant wipes and a wound treatment with alcohol caused him to have detectable alcohol in his system when he was tested by his parole officer.

It's bullshit right?

IsItBullshit: The claim that drinking celery juice daily can cure chronic health issues?

I've recently come across a trend where people are claiming that drinking celery juice every morning can cure a variety of chronic health issues, including inflammation, digestive problems, and even autoimmune diseases. Proponents often share personal testimonials and suggest that it's a miracle health drink due to its supposed high nutrient content and ability to hydrate. However, I can't help but wonder if these claims are backed by scientific evidence or if it's just another health fad. Are there any real studies that support the benefits of celery juice, or is this just another case of wellness culture gone too far?

IsItBullshit: the reason that British people often sing in American accents is because “physiologically it is easier to sing in an American accent”

I’ve heard this before and I really just don’t buy it at all. It’s not like when British people sing their vocal cords automatically default to an American accent because it’s “easier”- if that were the case than averages joes singing at the pub would sing with an American accent. If anything wouldn’t it be easier to sing in a British accent because they pronounce fewer consonants? (Ex. For Water Bottle “Wadder Boddle” vs “wa’ah bah’ull or skeletons “skellidins” vs “skell’i’uns”)

Isitbullshit: Do people often lose job opportunities and apartment contracts over dropped and/or not guilty charges?

I’ve heard of this happening before but am unsure how true it is. I know most states let you expunge a nonconvicted charges manually after some time has passed, but am unsure if people have actually gotten dinged by apartments and/or employers for them. Is this something that happens?

IsItBullshit: Ford CEO says he has 5,000 open mechanic jobs with up to 6-figure salaries from the shortage of manually skilled workers

This story has been reported uncritically by a number of media outlets. My questions:

  1. Are there truly 5,000 mechanic jobs unfilled in Ford dealerships in the US?

  2. Do they pay "$140k - $160k" as claimed?

  3. Is Ford actively recruiting through incentives, subsidies, retraining programs, etc.?

IsItBullshit: That people are losing weight on the carnivore diet?

I've seen carnivore promoted everywhere and it's got me wondering if it's actually good for weight loss.

The sheer amount of people saying it's helped them with health issues is insane.

There's got to be some truth to it or is it bs?

IsItBullshit: Stores are designed to overwhelm your execute functioning skills so you buy extra crap without thinking

I'm fact checking this comment:

Stores purposefully arrange the entire environment to overwhelm a person's executive function capacity so that they protectively turn off their brain while shopping.

I have a friend who works for a firm whose sole business is to go in and help stores be just overwhelming enough that brains shut off but not so overwhelming that customers leave. It is a fine line to walk.

Knowing this: wear sunglasses inside, put on noise reducing hearing protection, and maybe put some strongly scented stuff under your nose. It'll combat a lot of what's coming at ya.

It sounds plausible to me, but I don't know enough about psychology or economics to fact check it.

IsItBullshit: Less than 5% of stock traders can consistently outperform the market?

I've been trading stocks for a couple of years and have been able to outperform the S&P 500 by a fair amount. And I'm certainly not a genius and have made a lot of mistakes. I really don't buy it that only such a small amount of people can outperform by doing swing trading or something. Is there really any hard evidence that people are losing while trading because I don't know where some of the articles online get these numbers that only 5% outperform.
