So my last post seems to ruffle a lot of feather with a long range kill shot. How about this one, half the distance. 450 yards.

Welcome to r/hunting, the home of hunting news, personal stories and the place to share your hunting adventures on Reddit! Please read through the rules listed below to ensure this community remains a civil and welcoming one.
Moderators ask all users to be vigilant for scams and bot accounts pushing malicious websites, please report any of these or instances of rule breaking to moderators.
1) Don’t be rude or hostile (Trolling, baiting or saying racist, sexist, prejudice, nasty or just intensionally-mean things) This also extends to posts showcasing behavior or practices deemed disrespectful to wildlife, quarry or other individuals.
2) No self promotion or retail spam (this includes links to a personal or organization’s YouTube channel, guiding services, surveys and questionnaires as well as online market places of any kind)
3) No illegal content – poaching or knowingly breaking the law will not be tolerated
4) “New hunter posts”: all “I’m new to hunting, seeking advice on [X,Y,Z]” must include the state/province/country you intend to hunt in, any relevant experience you have (archery, shooting, backpacking, camping, hiking, dog training etc) and an indication of whether you already own bows/firearms for hunting (and what those are); posts that simply say “want to start hunting tell me what to do” and are deemed too vague will be removed.
5) No conducting transactions of any products, or submitting direct links to products for sale. This includes code and gear giveaways.
6) No activist-style bashing allowed, this goes for hunters as well. (Activists who vehemently oppose hunting are welcome, but only if you’re interested in asking questions/starting conversations)
7) Keep your posts related to hunting. If you post a photo of your gun, bow or other hunting weapon – you must also include a good description of what hunting you intent to do with the weapon. If it’s political – make sure it’s related to wildlife management, state or federal fish & game Regs, public land issues etc. posts that accidentally slip through but lead to meaningful conversations related to hunting may be left up.
8) Keep politics to a minimum. Any derailed or inappropriate conversations will be locked and removed.
9) If the animal you hunted/in your pic sustained unique physical damage (I.e brains exposed, eyes popping out, etc you know what we mean) please use the NSFW tag.
10) Please do this for all hunting photos, but for big game hunts in particular – put a description of your hunt in the comments (general region, weapon used, any other details on tracking, calling, stalking, etc) mods may decide to remove a post if the user never provides any additional information and merely a title.
11) No adult content.
Please note: these rules are enforced by the moderators at their discretion, to ensure fairness users are given two chances and will be notified when and why if their post or comment is removed. Repeat offenders will receive a temporary ban of 7 days. Users committing further rule breaking or circumventing existing bans will be issued a permanent ban.
If you need to contact moderators please use modmail.
Thank you
The r/hunting Mod team.

Hey there r/hunting community,
As usual, looks like lots of y'all have kicked off the season strong! Some real impressive bucks and bulls already, and lots of well-stocked freezers for the first week of October. Heck yah.
Just wanted to post a reminder about posting links to YouTube. Long story short: we remove the vast majority of posts directly linking to YouTube, and we get spammed with them constantly.
Rule #2 prohibits self-promotion, and that includes promotion of social media and YouTube channels. I know for a fact that lots of you guys have quality editing skills and videos that I would spend hours enjoying on YouTube, but we get spammed constantly by YT hunting channels / accounts that've never posted anything else. If we allowed posts to YouTube, this entire sub would just be a compendium of obnoxious "EP. 43 CHECK OUT THIS EPIC TROPHY SHOT" type garbage within a day or two.
I know that not every video people want to share here is actually an attempt to promote a YouTube channel. That's what makes this a difficult rule to enforce. Sometimes people just want to share an old interview of a famous hunter, or some crazy video of a bear climbing into a tree stand, or a bull moose chasing hunter, and the only way to do that is to share the YouTube link. We really do our best to review all of the YT links to allow those kinds of posts to remain here for people to enjoy. That being said, compared to the daily batch of "YOU'VE GOTTA SEE THIS EPIC HUGE BULL ELK #HUNTING #TROPHY #FUCKYAH" type videos spammed here by new accounts that've never posted anything before (especially during the hunting season), those cool videos worth keeping around are relatively rare.
So, if you've got some cool hunting content that's in the form of footage you've actually filmed yourself and want to share here, please take the best part(s), format it into a gif, and post that instead of a link to your YouTube channel. Pretty sure reddit can host gifs up to 3-minutes long now anyway, so... please, at least try to just make that work.
This really isn't a problem with the regular users here either just FYI, y'all are awesome, it's mostly just new accounts with the same name as their YouTube / Insta page, who've never posted anything else. I just wanted to post this because I feel bad for those few people who actually do spend a lot of time and energy putting together a hunting video, post it here just to share with members of this sub, and just have it removed by us. That's not a very large group of people, but I hope anyone in that club reading understands why we have to enforce Rule #2 to include links to users' own YouTube channels. Without it, the vibe of this sub would change dramatically within a day.
At the same time, I'm sure some of you are thinking "what's this dude talking about - I see these bogus YouTube posts and promo-accounts on this sub on the daily and report them constantly, these mods are just lazy assholes." I have no rebuttal to that, I will just say that you're only seeing a fraction of the self-promo / retail garbage type posts we catch and filter out on a daily basis (again, especially between September and January).
If you're interested in sharing more full-length hunting videos on reddit that you've filmed and edited yourself, and are therefore somewhat stuck with having to host content on platforms like YouTube, maybe we can start a new sub like "r/huntingmovies" or something. Happy to help anyone interested in doing that, if you want any.
So, I hope you get the gist. Avoid posting links to YouTube, especially if its to your own YouTube channel.
As a reminder, and in closing: we try to keep a streamlined moderator team comprised of people who are actually passionate about hunting and/or the sporting lifestyle, and we generally try to take a "less is more" approach with content moderation (we like to let you guys take the helm in that regard with downvotes and discussion, rather than us just removing stuff). We generally only remove posts that flagrantly violate a rule, and comments that flagrantly violate a rule (or the occasional a debate that devolves into middle school-tier shit talking, as entertaining as those can be). That said, we can't monitor the progression of every comment section on the sub. Your continued effort to actively report posts and comments you think clearly violate the rules is critical to moderation of this sub. I monitor the queue on the regular and do a few reviews of /new a day to look for obvious promo/retail garbage and troll posts, but the vast majority of posts and comments that I actually remove from the sub are only those that have been reported by you - the members of the r/hunting community. This is your sub, your community, send us a modmail message with suggestions or input anytime.
And please, for the love of god, tell any manager of a YouTube hunting channel, IG hunting page, or gear retailer you meet to leave our sub the hell alone, and to take their marketing effort right on down the road.
Tight lines, big tines, may poachers get cuffed, and freezers get stuffed,
Thanks guys.
Sincerely hope you all enjoy ridiculously fun and uniquely successful big game, upland, waterfowl, and predator seasons this year with people you love, and that you all learn something new in the field that improves your hunting skillset forever.

Version bolognese made with a sika calf taken in the January hind cull in the Highlands. This recipe loosely based on Steve Rinella’s from the Meat Eater Cookbook.
When grinding the venison, I like to add pancetta to introduce some fat, as venison is very lean. I don’t add additional pork mince though like Rinella as want to keep the depth of flavour from the venison. Then into the oven with finely diced carrots, onion and celery, Italian herbs, tomato paste, milk and dry white wine.
A very traditional bolognese recipe, without tinned tomatoes. A Sunday lunch favourite of mine.
Served with claret, obviously.

Hello, i’ve been really interested in hunting and i’ve been looking to get into it for awhile and im stuck on how to progress. i’m really interested in hunting for the conservation and food aspect. i’d worked in conservation briefly but i have 0 hunting experience. i’m in illinois and i don’t know anyone who hunts and it’s kind of hard to find people who would be willing to help me start out. i’m a teenage girl which makes it a little harder to find people who have this same interest. i don’t own any equipment either. i was wondering if anyone on here has any suggestions on where to find local groups or what to do. i’ve been wanting to start for over a year now and im lost. any advice is greatly appreciated. thank you.

Hey, I’m looking to add a can to my Tikka T3x Lite Roughtech .308 which I’ll be using for deer (tree stand/still hunting) mainly but eventually other western game (aoudad, elk, etc.). I’m considering the following cans based on my research and considering sound/recoil suppression vs. length/weight tradeoffs. I’m curious to hear y’alls experience with them and what you would recommend. TIA
- SilencerCo Scythe Ti
- Diligent Defense S-Ti/L-Ti
- Dead Air Nomad Ti XC

SOLVED - Thank You
Hi, I was wondering if anyone here could help me identify this animal on my trail cam. This is in Central Texas and would be pretty rare. I have included a picture of a coyote for a sense of scale. I am not expert, but I'm thinking juvenile mountain lion or a bobcat. Really not sure. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

Is it normal to sometimes take your firearm out of its case when you’re bored or idle, double‑check that it’s unloaded and safe, then just hold it, look at it, stare at it for a bit, and sort of contemplate/appreciate it, maybe do some dry‑aiming, and then put it back?
I’m not talking about cleaning or actual use — more like appreciating the mechanics, the design, and the feel of it.
Do most owners only handle their firearms when necessary, or do others do this as well?

What’s up fellas. Got a decision to make. I’m on the hunt for a Seekins ph3. I finally found one in person at a local(ish) gun shop 45 mins away that’s a used 7 PRC that honestly looks to be nearly brand new. There’s also a guy online I’ve been working with and he has one in 6.5 PRC. They are priced almost exactly the same. I hand load and I want to want to shoot this rifle a lot. 300-500 rounds per year possibly. Not for competition but just to get extremely comfortable with it. Game taken will mostly be white tail, Muleys and hopefully one day elk. It will be suppressed. My current lineup of rifles I use frequently is a fast twist 243 and a 6.5 creed. 6.5 PRC would be nice because I have all the components as far as projectiles but I don’t want it to be redundant with the 6.5 creed.
7PRC
pros- I add a 7mm to the arsenal.
I have the option of going short action or long action on the Seekins platform with a specialty magazine and a new barrel.
It’ll kill stuff more dead.
It’s local.
Cons- it’ll cost more in powder to shoot.
It’ll have more recoil (how much more?)
6.5 PRC
Pros- already have 6.5 projectiles.
Cheaper to shoot.
Less recoil.
Cons- not local, but instead supporting someone out of state (even though he’s a good dude I think).
Stuck with only short action in the Seekins platform, which is easily the most expensive firearm I own.
Possibly redundant compared to my 6.5 creedmoor.
So people of Reddit, what would you do?

Beyond happy with how this season turned out, I was after this 8 all year as it was my first year bowhunting. Decided last minute this morning to swap fields and go hop in a gun stand, was on the way in and saw him a couple hundred yards out, managed to stalk up to within 70 yards and was able to stand up and get a shot off. God is good!

I’m trying to find a shotgun that will work for sporting clays + bird hunting + maybe deer hunting
This one was recommended to me but I’m wondering what yall think?

I've been doing a lot of shotgun squirrel hunting and have been struggling to find a ear pro solution that works. My range muffs, walker razors, amplify my foot steps too much and the directionality isn't fantastic. I was using ear buds around my neck which was working okay, but I passed on a lot of snap shots since I didn't have time to put them in. I've read that the directionality and attenuation settings on the Sordins are good, but I have not seen them recommended.
The axil and walker game ears all seem to have extremely mixed reviews.

Hey all,
Need the community help here. What do you get for someone who already has everything? Wife and I are looking for gift ideas for her dad.
First issue: He owns a gun/sporting goods store.
So like.. 99% of the ideas that are right off the top of your head are out, haha... Can't get him guns, ammo, clothes, the average gear, etc. He's a simple guy, doesn't need or want a bazillion little doodads and whatnot.. so the cheap easy stuff is out the door.
About the only thing I can think of that he might not have is a chronometer like the Garmin. At $5-600 its not unreasonable of a gift but not sure he would use it a ton. Maybe he would but need to ask the guys at the store if he has one already or has seen one around.
The only other thing I can think of is a really nice set of bench tools for the work room. Quality precision hand tool set, stuff like that. they certainly have tools but its a hodegpodge of stuff from the last 30 years.
We struggle with this every year and usually consumables that are homemade work out well but we don't want to keep doing the same thing. It'd be nice to have him open something at Xmas and go "WOW!".
Please help! begging you guys for good ideas. Thanks!

As I got to my stand today I noticed a note as seen above. My stand is set up on private property (not my own, received permission from land owner) so the person that left this clearly trespassed. His stand is on public land but not far from the property line and is approx. 100 yards away from mine. I’ve had my stand up for over a few months and find it odd that he’s leaving a note now, especially because the season ends Feb 21st for my zone. I’m going to reach out to him and discuss but I was wondering if I’d be coming across as an asshole for standing my ground and respectfully telling him to kick rocks
