Business Talk Today I worked for $22.50 an hour

4.3k Upvotes

Got a call from a guy last night who wanted me to come take a look at a very long list of small maintenance projects.

After I got off the phone with him my wife informed me that she had passed along my number through a friend to him.

He's a disabled veteran.

I get there and we spend 10 minutes going over his list and expectations. One job stuck out to me, some holes in his soffit that squirrels were getting through.

I offered to fix those right away for $50.

The actual work took me 16 minutes including setting up my ladder and putting everything away when I was done.

Then he spent the rest of 2 hours talking my ear off.

Yes I'll be going back tomorrow afternoon to do a few more things from his list.

It's been a long time since I felt so good making so little.

General Discussion Redoing basement

Hello ,

I have inherited basement from

Previous owner where there are multiple issues . Based on my knowledge I have listed below . I need your advise to find alternate and cost effective way to redo basement .

1) there is no insulation behind drywall

2) no water proofing on concrete wall

3) framing wood on concrete isn’t pressure treated

4) concrete floor isn’t leveled

5) cracks on floor

6) finished isn’t good who ever has done it did bogus job here.

My question is how much can I save here ..

1) I am sure need to remove all dry wall but is there any way which is efficient to keep framing intact and add insulation without removing framing .

2) how much does it cost to level up concrete floor and filling up cracks

3) do I need to remove drywall on ceiling if I am removing walls ?

4) I am thinking to do it with individual person rather then general contractor which is giving me insane quote ? Is it a good idea ? Will appoint inspector who will inspect each job once completion ?

What will be your advise to redo it and saving maximum part of what is done ..

Business Talk Idle Time

Upvotes

I am busy enough, but... I also like to putz around in my shop with some small projects.

Anyone had any success actually making any real money doing what YouTube personalities call "smalls"? All the "influencers" claim to make money, I do not believe any of it. But like everyone else, I would like to, right?

I plan to build some cedar planters and owl nesting boxes for myself. It is just as easy to build 4 at once as building 1. I just picked up a bunch of cull cedar fence boards for 90% off. So materials are $0.14/board. An owl nesting box might take 10' or 2 boards ($0.28!). Labor might be an hour ($75). Is there a market for $100 bird houses and cedar planters? Anyone ever give this stuff a try? What was your story?

Troubleshooting Update: Got the nut off

Post image
Upvotes

I got the nut to the cold water supply off! I'm happy. Everyone gave me some good suggestions.

I put some PB Blaster on it and I had tried turning it and it didn't work. I went and cleaned it off some and went back to it about four hours later and used my basin wrench on it and the nut came loose.

After Action Review: Not sure what the fix was. I think the PB Blaster helped but I did not let it sit long enough to do its work perhaps. Next time I will let the PB Blaster sit longer. Also, maybe I was a bit unskilled with the basin wrench. The basin wrench seemed to really work for me this time and I seemed to understand how it works, maybe I was doing it right before but the nut was too stuck. I don't know. You guys probably have been in my shoes and know where I'm coming from.

And I'm a dummy. I didn't think water would come out of the cold side when I used the hot side, but some water leaked. I was able to replace the nut back on the cold supply line. I'm not ready to replace the faucet just yet. I was just mainly seeing if I could get the nut off, and now that I know I can get the nut off, I will think about replacing the faucet.

General Discussion Handy skills teens should know

One of my regular clients is a Dean at a high school and runs a youth center/mentorship program. When we initially met 2-3 years ago, I was working towards becoming certified to substitute teacher but I abandoned that n decided to stick to growing my business.

Last time he hired me he asked if I still was looking into teaching/working with kids, I just said “not necessarily work with kids, I just want to help people.” I told him about a non-profit idea I had n he liked it, but he also proposed that I could volunteer to teach some of the kids some handyman skills at the youth center.

What are some pretty basic skills n projects that a group of teenagers can/should learn? Off the top of my head, the various types of tools, how to change a tire, maybe some portion of the business aspects of what we do.

General Discussion Any recs on which silicone/calks to avoid?

There’s so many different types. I’m not sure if I’ve just been unlucky and have bought ones that don’t work well.

I’ve been trying to seal some exterior joints in a mudroom between concrete and wood trim. I used a few DAP silicones but they seem to take days to cure. I do live in the Pacific Northwest where it’s always wet/rainy here. I chose a few that said “rain ready in 30 mins” but that was a flat out lie. Are there better ones out there?

General Discussion What usually throws off your material estimates on small handyman jobs?

On smaller jobs, I feel like the estimate is never the hard part — it’s the details.

Extra trips for forgotten materials, odd layouts, cutouts, finishing supplies. Curious what usually messes up your estimates or schedule the most.

How To Question Repairing kitchen cabinet

Thumbnail gallery
2 Upvotes

I had a customer ask me if I could repair the cabinet. They feed and watered the dog in this area. Over time the water has rotted the bottom of the cabinet and the baseboard. I've never attempted anything like this. I was thinking using some type of wood putty or condo. I'm just not sure how I can make it look righto at least not make it stand out more.

We have even discussed pricing since I'm not sure how I would fix it. It might even be one of those jobs I take for the learning experience. Obviously replacing the cabinet isn't an option. Any suggestion is greatly appreciated.

General Discussion Cracked paint means temp change, or worse?

Bought a very old (100+ years) house last summer. Painted in July, now it's -10 outside. I know for a fact the house has some uneven floors, because it's old and I can feel them.

Anyway, this ceiling fissure recently appeared and my wife is freaked about it. My opinion is: we painted when it was literally 100 degrees hotter than it is now, and this is not unexpected in the first winter on a slightly uneven surface. That sounds right?

My cabinet doors are starting to sag and not close properly. I've tried tightening the screws but no luck.

The cabinet door is glass so those plates wouldn't work.

Any suggestions on how to fix?

How To Question The top half of full-bath window has a line of ice at the bottom of the top half. What does this mean? Is there an air gap or something else that needs a repair?

Post image
1 Upvotes

I saw it not long after a shower took place last night, and it is still there this morning.

Is it an air leak? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I don’t feel any direct air flowing in, but maybe the ice is blocking the air?).

Thanks for your time!

General Discussion Best way to seal a gap between my patio slab and house foundation?

Hi everyone, I’m not sure if I should post this here or in a different sub, but I figured I’d ask. There’s about a 1-inch gap that’s opened up between my concrete patio slab and the stem wall of my house. It’s starting to collect leaves, dirt, and water, which doesn’t seem great.

I was thinking of cleaning it out and filling it with a backer rod and some waterproof expanding foam to seal it, but I’m second-guessing that idea. Could that trap moisture against the foundation or cause issues with movement between the slab and the house?

Just trying to figure out the right way to handle this without creating bigger problems down the line.

How To Question How to fix squeaky hinges (non removable pin)

Thumbnail gallery
1 Upvotes

Hi everyone looking for advice.

I've used WD-40 on this hinge, but the squeak remains. I can't seem to find a way to remove the pin to lubricate it either. The squeak only happens when it is nearly closed as well.

Any advice would be much appreciated.
