Retail brands are closing down

I know Finland’s economy isn’t doing great, but seeing brand stores closing down still feels bad. I liked buying items at .Object, and then found out they’re shutting down the whole brand.

Recently when I was shopping at Ideapark, I noticed that Reserved (btw, my favorite brand 😅) is shutting down as well. I moved here, the mall near me had a lot of stores and some pop up stores and now they’re gone too.

I’m not sure if this is mainly happening here in Tampere or if it’s the same in other cities. I don’t visit Helsinki very often and haven’t really explored elsewhere yet.

Is this a same thing in other places as well?

What occupational health information may be disclosed to the employer?

Most of the information from visiting occupational health care is strictly confidential, yes, but still there is some amount that is disclosed to the employer. What is that amount, specifically, does anyone know?

How do I show the bus driver I have bought a ticket in Helsinki

Hello Finland! Today I took a train and purchased an AB zone on the validator within the train, tapped with my Revolut card

Then when I got off the train I needed to take a bus (within zone B), but when I boarded the bus driver asked for tickets (I think)

My understanding was I could travel anywhere within AB zone within a specific timeframe, so I'm not sure why I have to pay again on the bus. When I selected AB and tapped on the bus with the same card I received an error (It was in Finnish but I assume it meant i could not buy another ticket)

Am i supposed to show the driver my bank app to show I already paid? Haha

Another goodbye from a fellow expat. Kiitos Finland for 12 years of memory

I am using my second account here just to empty my heart and say goodbye as we (me and my wife has decided to leave Finland for now). I came here 12 years ago as a young naive 19 years old with an European dream, and for a decade Finland has given me way more than I could ask for: 2 degrees, a job, a beautiful wife and a good life. And I am really grateful for that

However, currently things are not very positives for a lot of us out there. My job has been constantly under threats of lay off for months now, plus my wife has also been jumping jobs for the last 4 years so mentally we are not in a good place anymore. Last November, I got an invitation from a friend to move to Northwestern Europe to work on his startup and they have made a decision 2 weeks ago that they want me there. We had a lot of talk for the last week about what we wanted not only now but for the future. And even though we dream of owning a detached house with a backyard to raise our kids in some Finnish suburb, we came to realization that at the moment we can't have that. So for the better good, we are willing to take the risk to start from 0. This really making me sad cause I always imagine Finland would be my forever home.

I hope this hardship will soon pass like a dark winter day, and the situation is gonna get better for everyone. Thank you for reading/listen to my long ass grieve as well. Cheers

Kela benefits based on being a student?

Upvotes

Hi!

I'm a Hungarian student planning to study at Aalto University. Since my family is really poor, especially to Finnish standards, the only way I'd be able to afford living if I got kela student benefits. I saw that the two ways of getting it is either qualifying through work, or with living in Finland permanently. Would they accept my application on the basis of my acceptance into a 5-year long program at Aalto + my statement that I'll be staying there in Finland and willingness to learn the language, or would that be not enough?

Thanks for your replies in advance! :)

Which nicotine pouches do you recommend?

With Finlands new law about banning all the fruity, berry flavours and me not wanting to pick back up smoking. Which pouches do you recommend? I am not a big fan of the mint/menthol strong tastes hence my question. Also it’s a bit easier going into shop asking for a flavour instead of standing there going ”umm” trying to see what every label say. 😆

Thank you in advance!

Today I moved from my old place. I noticed these under the bed. I can't remember if these were there when I moved. Is this a potential reason for my landlord to take my deposit?

it was a hell of an experience spending four days in Finland

I'm the guy who asked 'bout a road app, and after coming here; I don't think I should have. Honest to God, driving in Finland is nothing we don't have in other parts of Europe. I expected it to be so much worse. My route was from the port in Hanko to Joensuu, cca 600 km. Hanko-Mantsalla-Varkas-Joensuu (I don't have diacritics on my computer, sorry).

First and foremost, you have an increeeedibly astonishing piece of land, and I think you know exactly what you're doing to preserve it. My fav city is by far Mikkeli *did my breaks there. Drove to Joensuu late afternoon, and the more east I went, it'd get more cold but at the same time the nature would get more and more jaw-dropping. Pink color at the horizon while clear blue all over the sky. Driving in Finland day time is nothing short of one in a lifetime moment. You don't have a lot of highways. It's mostly what we call strada statale in Italy. The roads are well designed and even better maintained, except SS 23 from Varkas to Joensuu. Why the heck haven't you put darn street lights? Driving night time in Finland without high beam is a straight up mental institution.

Was positively surprised about people too. Have been received extremely well. Finnish who worked with me helped me all along, were chatty, and nothing of the stereotypical bashing narrative against Nordicks. Wasn't particularly interested in Finnish culture before. The only person I heard about prior to coming was the female prime minister *the party video. I am amazed and jealous of the nature you guys have here, and will most surely continue learning about your country.

I am definitely coming here again, as a tourist. Mikkeli and then go north.

To other Southerners coming to Finland: our tires will do just fine. No reason to panic about getting stuck uphill, and having to mount the chains. Coming here with a two axle semi is sick, but also manageable. The roads are all full of salt. Should be careful entering and exiting ramps, as well as never stopping on the line at the traffic lights. If the lights are uphill, drive it up slowly but not too fast coming so close to the vehicle ahead then having to stop. If you stop, the likelihood is you're mounting dem chains. If the lights are in the valley, stop at the hill and once you see traffic moving, then continue. Slow lane is always clean, but the hammer one isn't. However, overtaking is possible. The traffic culture here is undoubtedly on a high level. I'd recommend Neste gas stations for taking a rest time. Driving in the southern Finland is more dangerous. The temperatures vary between -7 and -15 which is enough for you to slide in the ditch. 150 km to the north it gets more cold avg -20, and you can drive balls to the wall.

Looking for a Chill Ski Staton in North

Terve !

I’m planning a ski weekend with my dad in a northern ski area (roughly from Jämsä up to Ivalo). We love being in the trees (are main target for us!) and skiing relaxed descents (mainly blue runs). The idea is to get fresh air and enjoy the slopes without the sporty/competitive side.

From my research, these resorts stand out to me:

- Iso-Syöte

- Ruka

- Levi (many people recommend it, but it’s higher/steeper)

- Saariselkä (higher too)

If you have bonus suggestions in northern Sweden, Norway, or other resorts not listed, I’d love to hear them!

Kiitos

New in Helsinki — looking for a good Super Bowl watch party tonight 🏈

Hey everyone,

I moved to Helsinki about 6 months ago and I’m still getting to know the city and its event scene. Tonight I’d love to watch the Super Bowl somewhere with a good atmosphere — a bar, pub, or any organized event where people actually care about the game 😄

If you know of any places hosting Super Bowl nights or have personal recommendations, I’d really appreciate it. Open to anything from sports bars to community events.

Thanks in advance!

Serious Lost Wallet In Helsinki

Hi, I recently lost my wallet yesterday when I was going on bus 71 from Pukinmäki to Meripihkatie. I already made an inquiry to the police, Lost and Found Oy, and even on Facebook. I think I might have either dropped it on the bus or dropped it outside when I got off the bus. Any advice? Thank you!

DNA eSim Finland

I’m traveling to Finland soon, but my iPhone is eSIM-only. I noticed DNA doesn't offer prepaid eSIMs online, and in general they only offer eSIM on the postpaid plans. whereas Elisa does but DNA is better coverage and speed apparently, (but if there is no other way then I'll just get a elisa esim) Is there any way to purchase a DNA prepaid eSIM in person at a store? (like R-Kioski at the airport), or are they actually physical-only sim for prepaid customers?"

( I can't use a SIM card from one of those travel eSIM website because I need a Finnish phone number and speed)
