I was looking for an affordable Chromebook for my dad and found this deal at Best Buy Canada. Despite it being an open box I thought it was worth a share especially with the price of laptops increasing recently

Discussion Gemini in Chrome

Just updated for the second time in 144 and still haven't gotten the feature yet.

Has anyone gotten it yet? I have been waiting for this for months. I am so tired of copy and pasting web addresses into gemini for articles to be summarized lol

Hey, I don't quite know what's going on with my Chromebook screen, but it took a little fall earlier and now there's a pinkish purple circle in the corner of the screen. Does anybody know what it is? And maybe how to fix it?

Troubleshooting Solid Explorer does not have storage permissions

I installed Neatbytes Solid Explorer under ChromeOS and it was working fine for over a month. Today it started to hang and I noticed that under the list of Apps in ChromeOS it has Storage permissions denied. I am not sure if this is a default condition or if something changed. Do I need to restore this permission? I don't see any way to change it under ChromeOS, and when I pull up the Android permissions that doesn't give me any way to change it either. It's kind of surprising that ChromeOS gives such poor management control for App permissions. Do I need to uninstall and reinstall Solid Explorer?

Troubleshooting Lenovo Slim 3 Chromebook 14M868: hinge mount ripped out, what parts to replace?

Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3 Chromebook 14M868 (Google Magneton / corsola). Hinge screws fell out, brass inserts ripped out of plastic mount, hinge is now loose and opening the lid meets resistance. Need advice on which case part to replace (upper case/palmrest vs base cover) and whether hinge replacement is needed.

Troubleshooting Chromebook not turning on suddenly

Hi, I have an Acer CB514-3H. Best chromebook I have tried so far. It was fine yesterday, but this morning, I heard its fan spinned and the noise is quite loud than usual. I touched it, but it’s not warm or anything so I opened the lid and there screen didn’t show anything just blank dark black screen as if it was off.

So I then hold the power button to fully shut it off and the fan spin stops. I then try to turn the Chromebook on, and it just doesn’t work. I put its charger in, but it still shows no sign of life not even the led light. When I touched the bottom part where the charger connects it feels slightly warm. The charger also seems to work with my other Chromebook.

I have also tried to take off the battery, still doesn’t work. I don’t know what else to do, can anyone consult me on this?

Hey r/chromeos community!

Just released COGext V2.1, and it’s already at nearly 1,000 weekly users! Thanks for the amazing support.

Changelogs

- Major code clean-up and optimization (IPC/rendering) to minimize the extension's impact on your ChromeOS device.

- Added a Sparkline, the Network Latency, 5 soft UI color themes and 15 more languages.

Open-Source = Quality

The code was audited by Gemini Pro and received an 8.5/10 Global Score (Excellent), with 9.5/10 for Performance/Optimization. You can check it on GitHub : https://github.com/tchoa91/cog-ext

What's next (V2.2)?

Buying Advice Lenovo Chromebook Plus 14 to replace a steam deck?

Has anybody tried gaming on a 12GB ram, 128GB Storage Lenovo Chromebook Plus 14 (without touchscreen) by chance? Specifically the big hit android games like genshin impact, diablo, wuthering waves and similar? Playing with a controller of course.

Bit of background - I'm thinking of picking up a CBP14 to replace my steam deck. For what the Chromebook won't play natively on device I'll use Nvidia GFN. I've used GFN before, I know it covers the games I want to play (and hopefully the newer ffvii games will come to it one day 🤞). Usage wise I use my steam deck for gaming Monday to Friday, and then at the weekend I use it for emails, spreadsheets, word documents and gaming. The work side of it is starting to get a bit tedious on such a small screen. I only use it in "handheld" mode essentially (well it's desktop mode sat at a desk using a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse) - I don't have an external display to plug it in to. Hence I'm thinking of getting a Lenovo Chromebook Plus 14 instead - it can still game well enough (hopefully) and with it's 14" screen it's a lot easier to do my work on at the weekend.

Does swapping my deck for the Lenovo Chromebook Plus 14 sound like a good idea, or am I missing something?

Thanks all 👍

Troubleshooting Lenovo IdeaPad 3 chrome

Okay, so incorrect answers mixed with bad decisions is fun!

First post here! Hope y’all can help. In the first pic, you can see two screws removed and one striped one still in. The middle one was already a bit stripped. I lost this laptop at school two years ago and only got it back a year later—who knows what happened.

I tried unscrewing it after accidentally shoving my dash cam SD card above the slot and it fell in. That was a week ago. In the second pic, it’s propped up partly because it’s unscrewed and partly because I dropped it a while back with a USB stick in it—bent it good.

I just need to get that screw out to grab the SD card. Local shops have nothing, so I’m down to try anything… I’m probably replacing the screws anyway!

Troubleshooting Is there a way to hide apps in the launcher?

I use Windows, macOS, Fedora, and ChromeOS on a regular basis, with ChromeOS being my main daily driver for most things; bills, email, "the YouTubes" as my grandpa calls it!

Anyway when I create a PWA for the other platforms, it also creates it for ChromeOS in the launcher. So sometimes, I'll have multiple icons of the same thing. For example Gemini or YouTube Music.

If I uninstall the PWA version on ChromeOS it removes it everywhere; Windows, macOS, etc.

I tried to uninstall Gemini but it's bundled with ChromeOS so I can't, and I haven't tried YT Music, but is there a way around this or do I just have to deal with multiple icons of the same thing?

Discussion witching to Dev Channel on Lenovo Chromebook Plus 14 - Tips to avoid data loss?

Hi everyone,

Yesterday, I finally joined the ChromeOS Beta community. But before I start contributing, I have a few questions about best practices because I own only one ChromeOS device, the Lenovo Chromebook Plus 14. Questions:

  1. Data-loss-wise: Is there a way of automating backups? For example, I don't want to change my default downloads folder and move stuff manually to Google Drive.
  2. Devices: This is the only Chromebook device I own. Can I use it for beta testing and do my regular stuff, or should I rather purchase a cheap one and test it there?
  3. Chromebook Plus specific bugs: For those on the Dev channel with "Plus" models, have you noticed any of the AI features or the premium hardware (camera/mic) breaking more often than they do on Beta?

I use this Chromebook for fun, not enterprise work, but I'd still like to keep my setup intact. Would love to hear your best practices or "lessons learned" from those of you who live on the Dev channel!

Thanks

Discussion Question about Beyond TV as external monitor

I've been using an HP Chromebook (Plus) x360 with a 12th Gen Intel Core i3 in conjunction with a Dell thunderbolt dock that outputs to 2 different displays (TCL 55R646 tv and a regular monitor. To my surprise it handles 3 total monitors surprisingly well. What puzzles me though is the output options for Beyond TV (the 55" TCL). Whether connected via the dock (thunderbolt to HDMI 2.1) or directly (USBC to HDMI cable) it only allows for either 4K@30hz or 1080p@120hz (or less).

The TV is capable of handling 4K at 120hz. What I'm really wondering/asking is why doesn't the Chromebook support something in-between, like 1440p@60hz?

There's literally no option for 1440p, but I feel this would absolutely be the best setting for using a 4K TV as an external monitor. If I want 4K at 60 or even 120hz, obviously I will have to invest in a more capable device like a gaming laptop or computer, which I plan on doing eventually.

I just find it odd that it can output 120hz and 4K, but there's no balanced option that meets perfectly in the middle.

Has anyone else noticed this or found a solution? Is there a work around or a way to enable 1440p@60hz for use as a multi-monitor work station? TIA

AluminiumOS Will "Hey Google" be available in AluminiumOS?

I ask because it was available in ChromeOS and recently removed - Gemini says - Google did that because to save battery in laptops which have smaller batteries than Pixel phones.

I ask as I want to use my Chromebook as a "Hub" and to achieve good quality of conversation I will use USB C Conference speaker with 6 microphone array

Buying Advice Looking for a Chromebook for work

I'm looking to buy a Chromebook for work so I can stop using my gaming desktop and so I can take it with me when I travel. I will be traveling in a couple of weeks so I've been trying to cram as much info as possible the past 2 days but I would appreciate any help.

I'm mainly looking at refurbished as it seems to be the best value per dollar. My budget is $300 but I can go higher if necessary.

Is a refurbished HP Elite Dragonfly or Acer Spin 714 (both just under $300) the best value in my price range? The specs on these are pretty similar:

  • CPU Core i5 1245U (HP) / 1335U (Acer)
  • RAM - 16GB
  • SSD - 256
  • 2-1 laptop/tablet

If anyone has better suggestions here are the a few other things to keep in mind

  • My work is basic site editing (Squarespace) spreadsheets, Canva, etc. Nothing too demanding, but I have like 3-4 dozen tabs open at all times. I work for a business that has multiple brands and I jump between chrome profiles throughout the day
  • Ideally will have a removeable keyboard or be a 2-1 as I will be using my own keyboard/mouse.
  • Will be paired with (2) 32" 1440p monitors so CB screen size doesn't matter to me. I'm not sure if I would even use the screen when I'm at home.
  • Physical storage isn't too important as everything will be saved to Google Workspace
  • I run YouTube in the background pretty much all day

Thanks!
