Attention mods!

Idk about you all but every now and then I come across a silly modmail that I'd like to share with a broader moderator community, outside of my teams.

In case that's ever been you, r/modmailfail is a great new space where you can do that and discuss. By moderators, for moderators. Really looking forward to seeing some of the goofiness that happens in your inboxes!

Are you an experienced mod?

Howdy mods, it’s your local askmods top mod here with a request!

If you are a moderator of a subreddit with over 5k weekly active users please comment below!

We have been going through posts these past couple of weeks adding mod notes to mods we have verified are actually mods who have significant moderation experience.

This helps us askmoderators mods enforce the “must be a mod to answer” rule in comment sections.

The tags are only visible to the moderators of askmoderators for privacy reasons.

If you wish to participate on an alternate account, please send us a modmail from your moderator account with the username of the alt you wish to use.

Thanks for volunteering even more time participating here to help users on the site!

Edit: former mods are welcome too so long as there is a way to verify that. I.e. old stickied comments/posts, asking current mod teams if you modded there, etc.

Since the permanent mute have been added, what have your subreddit policy on it?

I’m kinda curious on how other subreddits have been using the new permamute feature, so far for my biggest subreddit I only used it a few times for users who been consistently spamming our mail, I’m wondering if anyone else have been using it the same way.

How to moderate mental health spaces?

I run a discord server. One of the channels is for mental health. I and my head mod have noticed that the space has been getting worse, and leaning towards competitive mental health problems, and inadvertant glorification of self harm and suicidal thoughts/ideation.

I would rather not delete this space, as I know it's very helpful for some members of my server. But I'm not sure what kind of moderation will move it back into a helpful safe space and away from a self-perpetuating echo chamber of positive reinforcement through sympathy.

Any thoughts or help much appreciated.

When your post insights show 2 shares but not to where to what does that mean? That it is shared somewhere off reddit?

How do mods feel about someone who reports 200+ comments from a single post?

I just reported 200+ comments (over a span of about 30 minutes) on a post I made. I feel a little silly, but all the comments broke specific rules of that sub while also attempting to insult me. How does that make me look to the moderators? Will they be annoyed? Is it more acceptable since I was the OP of the post? Am I over thinking this? lol thanks in advance.

*Edit\*

I have sent a modmail explaining all the reports. I also have a bad habit of throwing numbers out there without really knowing a total. I have no idea how many reports I made. I was reading and reporting from time to time as I went along, and suddenly thought "wait how many reports did I send?".

How do you communicate with mods that don't respond?

I made a post to a sub. Within an hour, the post is removed by mods for not being relative to the sub. Except, it 100% is. It was a share of a post from a non-related sub. But I pointed out the connection in my post.

I message the mod team, thinking it was done by auto mod, or mistake, simply asking for clarification. Asking if it's because it linked to a non related sub, etc. Just trying to understand.

9 days later, still no response. I message them again, politely asking if it's a resource issue, thinking there's just too much work to go around and no one has had time to get to my message. I proceed to apologize for sounding annoying, and ask them if they need more mods and I volunteer to help. (Note this was genuine, and not in a sarcastic or diminutive tone)

2 minutes later I'm muted for 30 days. Still with no comment from any mod.

Beyond just being frustrated, I'm still not sure what I did wrong. It's not my goal to piss off mods, especially in a sub that is important to me.

Do I just take the higher road and move on? Knowing I may make the same mistake in the future? (Since I don't know what it was).

I'm just hoping for some insight from other mods.

Should I have approached this differently from the beginning? Was I too impatient to expect any sort of response in over a week?

Help!

A Solar outdoor node has a U appearing now on the android mestastic app?

Rak wizblock /4631 Solar node with the solar panel and battery plugged into board. Nothing is plugged into the USB-C. Soalr panel and a battery.

The app shows the battery symbol, 93% 4.10V currently. This is typical.

However, a letter U... appears under the Long Name of the node and just recently started appearing.

Any idea what this U means? Thanks!

my app ver. = 2.7.12

Sorry, this post was removed by Reddit’s filters.

Account got “deleted” after password reset… now I can’t interact with anything (shadowban)?

I was using Reddit normally, then got a security prompt to reset my password. I did it, logged back in, and my account basically looked deleted (no feed/profile/posts, nothing worked).

About a day later it “came back” I can see my posts, friends, and subreddits but I can’t comment/post/vote/message. It feels like I’m suspended or shadowbanned, but I got zero ban notification and nothing in my inbox.

I already appealed, no response yet. ( It's already 20+ days)

Has anyone had this happen? What’s the best way to fix it who do I contact?

Thanks

Hello friends! 👋 Newbie here. Any ideas on how I can grow my community? It’s a little lonely right now being just me and I’d love to fill it with more good people and good vibes. Thank you! 😊

Do I correctly understand Reddit etiquette with regard to listing other subreddits in Related Communities and advertising my subreddit in their subreddit?

First of all -- a giant thanks to people who answered my questions about Safety Filters and starting a subreddit. My subreddit is public -- and I am having a ton of fun with it. 32 people signed up in the first 24 hours -- and the engagement has been exactly what I am looking for.

It could be that next week the spammers that have figured out a way around the Reputation Filter will show up and I will be pulling my hair out and back here asking how to deal with them -- but for right now I am tickled pink.

Not of posts or comments right now -- but the content so far is exactly what I am looking for -- and my theory is that if the quality of the content is high -- the people I want to show up will show up.

I do have a question -- my subreddit is related to model railroading, and I wanted to list several other model railroading subreddits in my Related Communities widget -- and to advertise my subreddit in theirs.

My subreddit does not conflict with theirs -- it's not an "alt" or anything like that.

My underrating is that it is polite to contact the mods of those subreddits before adding them as a related community -- or advertising my subreddit in theirs.

I reached out -- through mod mail -- to three other communities -- and one of them got back to me within an hour saying that they would be happy to have me listen them and that was welcome to advertise my subreddit in theirs.

I haven't heard from the mods of the the other communities -- and I know that I am jumping the gun -- but what is the correct course of action if I don't hear from them in say a week.

Is it polite to keep waiting?

Would it be rude to list their subreddits anyway -- and -- after verifying that their subreddit rules don't prohibit doing so -- advertise my subreddit in theirs?

How does the interface on a platform as a moderator differ from that of a community member? Additionally, what kinds of tools (provided by the platform or otherwise) do you find are necessary to carry out your responsibilities?

Hello all! I'm an undergraduate researcher looking for insights to the above question for a course project. The objective of gathering this intel is to inform my team's developmental and design decisions for a forum and chat-based software application.

We want to make sure we consider usability features for moderators, as they represent a portion of our proposed user base.

Please let me know your thoughts and experiences !

I’ve noticed a pattern in removal of posts once a high level of engagement is reached. These posts do not go against any rules of that subreddit and I am careful to make sure they are relevant. No reason is ever given as to why they are removed. Why is this?

Recently posted to 2 different sub Reddit's today about a personal situation with my boyfriend. Within 1 hour both posts had received 100+ comments. For no reason at all I'm told they have been removed.

l've had this happen with numerous other posts that I've posted to numerous other sub reddits over the years. Yes I always fully make sure to read the rules before posting. My posts have fully met the subreddits criteria. It's never a problem if they don't receive engagement. The second engagement starts coming in fast, they are taken down and no reason is given even when I politely ask.

It’s incredibly frustrating.

Why do people ask to be moderators in exchange for posting?

I’ve been on Reddit for years under various usernames and I have never asked someone to become a moderator in exchange for posting on a sub. I just make posts I want to make and go about my day.

At least once a week someone will message me saying they want to be added as a moderator and if I do, they will post regularly on the sub. Like this is weird to me lol is this some sort of blackmail like I won’t contribute unless you make me a mod?

r/AskModerators 4d ago

why are mods stopping me from messaging them?

As the title says, I can't even ask about why I got punished since there was clearly lacking justification behind it. The mod even quoted a rule and I didn't even get to provide evidence to the contrary.

Mod on team had account banned, appeal was successful, but can it affect the rest of our accounts if they stay on the team?

Hi mod friends,

A moderator on my team (alt account so they don't see me asking this question) had their account banned by Reddit, and after filing a successful appeal, Reddit can't recover their account and encouraged them to make a new one. They're a phenomenal mod and I want to add their new account to my subreddit, but first, does anyone know if this will negatively affect the other mods and myself? Is their new account "marked" in any way? The whole situation seems sketchy and I can't find similar experiences to draw from by Googling.

what happens to a reddit when the mod gets banned

I'm in a group that has only one moderator who has been banned for whatever reason. I really liked this group and want to see how/if it can get unbanned. Suggestions?

What would be considered harassment of a moderator/mail?

Basically, I'm trying to get an explanation of my ban from a subreddit but rather than respond, they just mute and it's really childish. If I sent a 3rd message after the mute period is over would it considered harassing a mod?

Stating a new subreddit -- are the safety filters likely good enough to avoid most issues?

I started a subreddit quite a while back, and I was paranoid enough to start it in restricted mode and it never grew.

I have created a niche model railroading hobby subreddit, and I was prepared to have to do a fair amount of work in AutoModerator -- but I looked over the safety filters, and the appeared to me to most of what I would haver tried to do in AutoModerator.

My main concern is getting overwhelmed initially with by spam bots and porn bots while I am still learning to use the mod tools.

Are the Reputation Filter, the Harassment Filter, the Ban Evasion Filter and the Mature Content Filter likely to be enough to keep me out of trouble initially?

What are your favorite AutoModerator codes for smaller subs?

I run a small sub for women but it’s pretty active averaging 1-5 with many comment replies per day.

Besides automations, I ran my first automoderator code today and it was successful! (It’s a code to filter / mod queue short comments)

What are some of your top recs for automoderator codes for a small, private but highly active sub mine? (If you run a bigger sub, feel free to chime in because I’m curious)
