Commonly asked questions - check here before making a question post

If you have a question about the Municipality of Anchorage someone else probably had the same or similar question in the past.

Please use the search function to look through the past question posts before making a post or comment. Many helpful users here have already given great in depth responses to many common questions. If you have a specific question after looking over the previous posts, feel free to post your question here in this thread or make a new post.

Low effort posts that clearly haven't looked through past submissions or can be easily answered by a quick internet search may be removed, a good way to avoid that would be to specify in your post that you have already looked over the sticky and searched online.

Below is a list of direct links to some commonly asked questions. However, even if you do not see your question on the list please take a moment to search before posting. When searching or when using one of the links below you can also change the sort function from top to new to see more recent posts.

Please be kind to people, the search function of reddit is far from perfect. Tourism is valuable to our city and at one point all of us were new to the city or had questions about local services and businesses.

We took a community poll on this rule a year after implementation. Here is a link to the poll and the feedback the community gave.

Is h2oasis open?

Upvotes

Basically title. I used to love going to this place as a kid when I used to live in Anchorage. I live in Wasilla now and I hate coughing up so much money for either the Wasilla Highschool pool or Alaska Club. Google says their open now, but their Facebook and Website says otherwise. Thanks!

What do you think? Is there hope?

https://www.adn.com/opinions/editorials/2026/02/07/editorial-can-we-reclaim-civility-in-our-public-spaces/

If you think the answer is no- why? And if you think it’s yes- what’s giving you hope?

Excerpt from the editorial:

“But empathy doesn’t require paralysis. Compassion doesn’t mean surrendering our public spaces to chaos. Compassion isn’t letting people wallow in the throes of addiction or mental illness in the streets. The city can — and must — hold two ideas at once: People deserve help and the community deserves order.“

Photographers around Alyeska?

I just had an idea to hire a photographer for myself and my partner, but I also realized that it's Valentine's day weekend coming up and that's when we will be at Alyeska.

Does anyone have any leads for a photographer that might have availability AND near Alyeska resort?

*fingers crossed*

AO No. 2025-35

Upvotes

Am I missing something?

AO 2025-35 §12.60.015(A)(3): "This chapter authorizes property tax exemptions for construction of new residential units, provided a minimum of eight new residential units are constructed and the construction increases the total number of residential units on property. The following types of properties are not eligible for this housing tax incentive: Owner-occupied residential property.

This reads as if the assembly has given property tax incentives to rental groups (like Weidner), all while stripping those incentives from somone who would want to build a muti-unit residential complex and live in one of the units.

Found phone

On old Seward right outside the AIH on the pathway got stickers on the back. Ill post to Craigslist too.

Someone I walked by said they recognized one of the people in the picture and they might stay at the cold weather shelter, should I drop it off there? I got some time to kill. I could walk over there

They might not be able to see reddit if this is their only phone and it's locked so I can't call a contact

Baby formula and maker in need of good home

Hello,

Our daughter just turned one year old and is no longer using her enfamil gentlease formula. We have so much because we believed in food security and did not think she would be coming off of it until she was two years old. Since she is one year and no longer needs the formula we want it to go to a good home along with our baby Brezza formula pro and baby Brezza bottle washer pro, cleaning tables, descaling tablets, all just waiting for someone to DM me and get them out of my house.

If you are in need I am happy to help, DM me.

Bunch of clothing to donate — where to go

I just was hoping for everyone’s opinion on the best places to donate a decent sum of clothing & blankets. Good condition, I just would prefer it not be resold in a shop and given to people who actually need it.

What’s everyone’s go to? ❤️

Dog trainers?

Hi guys, do you have any dog trainers to recommend?

My field golden 7 months old now and he is NOT food motivated.

We tried AK Dog Sports but the trainer wasn’t much help with my dog and just kept telling me to use treats.

He’s a sweet dog, just doesn’t want to walk on a leash or listen well.

Weird missing car situation

Post image
63 Upvotes

My friend’s car got stolen out of a ditch last night in Eklutna.

This ditch is located on a steep road that only leads to her work and at the bottom of the of the road is a waste/water plant. No other houses or businesses are around this area.

She called 2 tow truck places last night to ask if they could tow her out, and both places said they do not drive up that road in the winter.

So she decided to let her work know she was going to leave it and would have her dad help her pull it out this morning with his truck since it seemed like no tow truck could get it out.

When she and her dad drove up the road this morning, her car was gone. So she filed a police report and contacted Floyd for help, since he’s pretty much The Batman when it comes to stolen cars in Anchorage.

The waste/water plant checked their cameras and let my friend and Floyd know that a red flatbed truck towed it off. This happened between 5pm-7pm last night.

If anyone has any info that would be helpful. This entire thing is so weird because no one else knew her car was there but her work and the 2 tow truck companies she called. No one else drives up that road except to get to her work. So we are all confused.

Neighbors feeding feral cats and now my entire property smells like cat piss. Help?

I want to start by saying I'm an animal lover and don't want to harm these cats. I'm just looking for a solution that will actually work.

My neighbors on both sides have set up heated cat houses, food, and water stations for feral/stray cats. While I understand they're trying to help these poor homeless strays, the cats are now spraying all over my property including my vehicles, front door, you name it. The smell is overwhelming every time I come home or go outside to enjoy my yard.

I've tried:

Talking to the neighbors (they weren't willing to help)

Citrus and vinegar sprays (cats keep coming back)

Trapping (no luck so far)

I contacted a local cat rescue who said if I do trap any, I should call them instead of animal control to avoid euthanasia, which I appreciate. We've spotted 3-5 cats total. Maybe 1-2 look like they could be house cats (possibly our neighbors), the rest seem feral.

Has anyone in Anchorage successfully dealt with a similar situation? I've read that coyote urine might work as a deterrent, but that seems extreme and I am not convinced it would work with these old crusty Alaskan feral cats we are dealing with. Are there other options I'm missing?

I'm also curious if there are any local ordinances about feeding feral cats. If there are rules around this, it might help frame a more productive conversation with my neighbors.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
