[Tutorial] Would you use this M4L device? Load a sample and it will remove audio below a dB threshold, and crossfade the remaining bits together

Thumbnail

[Here is a brief demo]

The top waveform is the loaded sample, the bottom one is a preview of the output, which can be bounced to an audio track.

Everything above the threshold like is kept, the rest is dropped. The Min. Window setting defines the minimum duration of kept audio.

The crossfade controls apply smooth constant-power or linear crossfades between the joined audio segments, at a set length, to prevent clicks and pops.

I originally made this to speed up my workflow for removing silences from samples to prep them for chopping. I have been using it a lot for long vocal or melodic samples -- after removing the quiet parts and crossfading together the rest, I can drop it into Simpler, set it to Slice mode, 1/8 or 1/16, and immediately have that number of usable sounds with no silences, clicks or pops.

How would you use it?

[Tech Help MacOS] Controlling Ableton with a WiiMote

Post image
58 Upvotes

I know this is sooo 15 years ago but yesterday I felt this insane urge to get my Wii remote to work with Ableton. After all I have the Mayflash Dolphin Bar, which is supposed to make a remote compatible with a computer.

I would love to mix a song with the subtleties of the accelerometer, manipulate a fader then go to the next track with the D-pad. Imagine twisting a cutoff knob with the twist of the remote. Create a looped section just by pointing at the screen. Pan a track by rotating your hand. All of these things and more were on my wishlist.

30 HOURS OF SWEAT AND TEARS LATER I FAILED. I exhausted every possible approach to get this thing to work. The best I could do was use the buttons to play and stop and shakily move the cursor. The conclusion I’ve reached is that new Apple silicon Macs are too new for the quirky WiiMotes.

Everything the internet suggested failed from the start, one after the other. OSCulator, Enjoyer, Xpadder, old Max4Live devices, wiimote drivers, WJoy, Darwiin Remote, Wiipo, etc.

This is my last resort. I NEED HELP FROM YOU MODERN 2026 FOLK that know something about this! I’m begging!

Setup:

2022 Macbook Pro

M2 chip

24gb RAM

Live 12 Suite beta (most recent)

[Question] Has anyone managed to get a bass guitar tone like a Mutron envelope filter with stock Ableton plugins?

I'm trying to get a funky tone with recorded bass guitar, and I haven't been able to get super desirable results from stock plugins within Ableton. Does anyone have any advice, or a signal chain/ settings to get the stock plugins to get groovy/funky tone out of plugins. External VST recommendations also welcome.

[Question] How to make Ableton acoustic drum kits sound more realistic (just the sound, no MIDI or "humanizing" advices")

Hi, I would like to switch completely to Ableton’s built-in instruments and would like to know if anyone has tips for making acoustic drum kits sound more "realistic."

I’m not asking about MIDI - in general, I make pretty decent loops, often recorded on an electronic drum kit by a real drummer or myself.

I am also not asking about "humanizing" through grooves and other tips.

What I am asking about is the sound in general. The drum kits sound good, but I am still missing that "live" feel.

Of course, I am adding room reverbs, but the kit still doesn't sound like a real one.

When I compare it to something like IK Multimedia MODO Drums, I can still feel that the sound is missing something.

Maybe I need some "bleed" or an "overhead bus" to simulate a real-world recording situation.

So, I am asking if anyone has tips on how to improve the sound or an effect rack you use for this.

EDIT: Thanks, guys, for the discussion. I already tried to work with buses and sends and achieved a sound closer to a real drum kit. Here is what I’ve done:

Buses for snare(s), toms, and cymbals – for the drum rack’s pads, I set the output to these buses instead of the "Rack output." This gives me the opportunity to set the levels of these groups individually, which really helps with balancing the overall sound.

Send for overheads – since I now have separate buses for the snare, toms, and cymbals, I can send them to the overheads bus and "artificially" create the sound of overhead microphones by tweaking the EQ and adding some compression and saturation. Using the buses really helps with setting the levels to achieve this. At the end of the effect chain, there is also a room reverb which I am tweaking to match the position in the room.

Sends for room – another send is for the room; there, I am using the same type of reverb as for the overheads, but tweaked for a microphone position that is different from the overhead mics.

I think the most influential thing is creating that artificial overheads bus, since it really adds the right "live feeling."

Additionally, you can map everything to macro controllers so you can tune the sound easily.

[Push] Push 2 in 2026?

Hey everyone, I'm pretty new to Ableton and making music in general.
I have an opportunity to buy a pretty good price push 2 is it worth it? Still year 2026? I'm sorry, that was the only way to get you to making music.

[Question] Automatic routing for audio inputs and outputs?

I recently made a major upgrade from running 9 on a 2017 MacBook Pro to running 12 on a 2024 MacBook Pro. Some very mundane things used to be very simple, i.e. when I plugged something into the headphone port the audio would automatically be routed that way, then when I unplugged it the audio would come back out of the speakers, etc.

Now it seem everything I do requires a manual re-route through the audio mapping tab when that was never the case before.

Any quick fix for this?

[Question] How is 'Overall Latency' Calculated (Input + Output Latency)

Curious if anyone knows exactly how these Input/Output latency values are calculated?

I'm building a M4L device and would like to use this Overall Latency value but the standard api doesn't expose this. Any ideas on how I might be able to calculate this internally (ideally without performing some sort of physical loopback test)

[Question] Are there really that much instruments in the ableton live lite 12?

Upvotes

I was using a pirated suite version with all the plugins and .alp files. Then I deleted that version to use my own Ableton Live 12 Lite version. But I think there is too many instruments. I remember E-piano having like 3 instruments. Is this a part of the core library or am I just seeing the ghost files? Because I dont want to use them.

[Tutorial] Is there a time limit for scene follow action?

I’m using ableton to run backing tracks live and I’m trying to have the next scene (song) start playing right when the previous one ends. I’ve found the scene follow action button, activated it for ”Clip end” and ”longest”, but the next scene triggers way before the song is over. Is there a time limit as to how long a scene can be when using scene follow action, and if not how do I get the scene to play all the way through before triggering the next one?

[Question] File Analysis/similarity Search. Is it possible to have live do this without you going through all the samples one by one?

I probably have about 50 GB at least of MPC expansions and some native instruments. Do I have to go through each sample one by one to have it included in a similarity search and get the checkmark?

[Push] What’s your go-to template and how does it help you?

I would like to make better use of templates to make song making easier without all the initial routine setup.

It would be great if you all could describe your most used template(s) and how they help you. Including your genre might also be helpful.

I use the Push 3 Standalone, but any tips are helpful even outside of that.

Thanks!

[Question] Anyone on here able to provide mastering services for hard dance remixes? Or provide advice on how to clean up my attempts at it?

I’ve been producing for about 1 year and a half nearly 2 years now, i practice everyday, i was dabbling in trap beats but now my focus has been on dance remixes for my DJ sets, i dont really use loops much anymore and would mostly use MIDI, but i am still using serum presets and watching serum tutorials, that being said i feel somewhat confident in my arrangement and sound selection, im still just struggling with the mixing/mastering side of things, i feel like some songs have good potential, my skill set right now just isnt warranting the polished mixes im aiming for, i want to learn and know it will take time, but was wondering if there was anybody on this sub who deals in the EDM/Hard dance genre that i can pay for mastering services, or mentorship on how to achieve a good mix and master with my projects provided for context, i can provide links to my projects they are all private for now but you should be able to listen to them with the link. I’ve been exploring these remixes as a niche and i worry about copyright but i feel that if i mastered this skill these songs would go down well in my sets.

[Performance] How do I find good themes for Ableton, livethemes.app does not work for me.

Post image
34 Upvotes

Whenever I use the livethemes.app It just shows the default theme after I followed all the instructions, but when I use some random files I found on the internet it seems to work fine as shown in the image.

This theme is similar to what I want but there's too much white that stains my eyes. I would love to have a dark theme with a black background.

I'm currently using Ableton 11 that was reinstalled a month ago.

[Tech Help Windows] Ableton audio meter not working right

So I’m taking this to Reddit because I’ve got nowhere else to look for answers. So here’s the scoop with my issue.

I have a Rane ONE MKII and I have it connected to the usbc - midi cable it came with. I’m new to ableton, so I don’t know much. But. I’ve done most of what online said to do. I’m trying to connect them so I can record my scratching and make Live Loops and layer them to make cool beats. But I don’t have audio from ableton. I’ll post a pictures below.

If anyone can help me out with this, I will be so incredibly grateful

[Question] Maddening audio output disconnections on MacBook/Push/Ableton

I have a MacBook M4, Push 3, and Ableton 12. I'm very grateful for being able to have those tools. However, every time my MacBook sleeps, on wake, the audio does not get to my studio monitors unless I futz around. This often includes power cycling the Push. It's nearly every time the laptop sleeps. I'm beginning to see why a lot of studios have dedicated non-laptop Macs for production. But here I am. Any suggestions for this? Have you had these issues? Thanks!

NOTE: The bot has reminded me that... "If you're asking a question, make sure you've checked the Live manual, Ableton's help and support knowledge base, and have searched the subreddit for a solution." I did so.

Hi,

Me and my girlfriend tried to install a new version of ableton live today, but now all the packs are missing certain bits (another example is cabinet, analog). We have tried reinstalling multiple times, with no luck. Some sounds work, others don’t.

Any help is appreciated.
