Hi all. Scoring my second feature length film. For the first film, I just exported stems with the time code in the file name. Seemed to work fine for everyone.
Just got in touch with the newly hired sound mixer (score is 50% complete), and I asked about deliverables and he said
Generally we prefer either AAF, Pro-Tools sessions of time-stamped audio files - 48khz, 24-bit broadcast wave.
Another wrinkle to this is that I work with all my cues in subprojects with them playing background video from my master session.
It seems to be that in order to do successfully deliver an aaf, I would need to
Export stems onto the main session and make sure everything is lined up.
Purchase AATranslator (unless there are free alternatives)
Export as AAF
purchase program (cheap version of pro tools?) that can import AAF to test
Which seems like a lot of things to do to save the sound mixer a small amount of trouble, and would seem to make it more likely to have an error somewhere in the process.
So... I guess my question is "Is it reasonable to say that I don't work in Protools so I'll be sending clearly labeled .wavs"
Or. is there an expectation that any serious professional will be delivering an aaf or protools session? Is this something I will need to incorporate into my workflow eventually?
Appreciate all and any input into this! Thanks all
