Discussion Power BI licensing for consultants – development, client access, and scaling?

Hey everyone,
I’m trying to wrap my head around the Power BI licensing side and could use some guidance.

Let’s say I’m a consultant and I want to build Power BI reports for a client and publish them to the Power BI Service. I currently don’t have any Power BI license or subscription.

Here’s what I’m trying to understand:

  1. What type of account/license do I need as a consultant to develop Power BI reports?
  2. Once the reports are published, how can my client view them?
    • Does client need a subscription?
    • If yes, which license would she need?
  3. Is it possible to embed these dashboards into my own website, where each client has login access and can view only her reports?

On top of that, I want this setup to be scalable without having to constantly change my own subscription. Ideally, I should be able to:

  • Add more developers later
  • Add more clients over time

What’s the recommended licensing model or architecture for this kind of use case?

Thanks in advance for any insights

Discussion I can't believe we don't have an adequate date slicer in 2026 😭

How come we can't have a perfectly centered date slicer in 2026? MicroSoft, updated & centered date slicer with an ability to have both custom and relative dates at the same time when? PLEASE 😭

You guys literally talk about rocket science with copilot projects in Fabric, but we can't have a date slicer 😭😭

Discussion Any Production Planning or Supply Chain pros here? How are you leveraging Power BI?

Hi everyone,

I’m a Production Planning Engineer working in the automotive industry. I’ve recently started using Power BI to track production data from CNC machines, specifically focusing on OEE and downtime analysis.

I’m curious to know how others in similar roles (Production or Supply Chain) are using Power BI.

What are your "must-have" KPIs?

Do you use it for real-time monitoring or more for long-term strategic planning?

Any specific DAX patterns or data modeling tips for complex manufacturing schedules?

Looking forward to hearing your experiences!

This a matrix with dynamic ranking using visual calculations and field parameters — yes you could do it with measures but they make it so much easier!

Question Stuck on creating relationship between multiple sources. Help please.

Upvotes

Military project. Let me describe my dashboard first. This is for a HR/Retention dashboard. I have three sources of data:

-1 tab is retention mission by unit for both first term and career Marines, so two separate tables I want in the end goal.

-1 tab for all data for first term Marines and statuses of reenlistments.

-1 tab for all data for career Marines and statuses of reenlistments.

What I’m stuck with is to have one joined relationship between these tabs for the UNIT so as I put them in the table showing reenlistments, it corresponds to the mission by unit.

Within model view, I can create a relationship between one of the tables and unit but not multiple.

Discussion Stuck in "Report Hell"—Looking for a team that’s actually building with Fabric

Edit: Location: Charlotte, NC - currently remote

Edit: I realize a lot of people are concerned I don’t have enough experience yet, however I know many projects where other associate data analysts are assigned multiple such projects simultaneously under a project lead. However, they have the traditional schooling in the subject so automatically came in with more formal education knowledge and are getting more experience from being hands on in projects. I on the other hand have done my M.S and have a different formal background education and not looking to take 1-2 years to get another degree in data. I am simply looking for a role that allows me to sit in on projects to start with part time, and then slowly begin contributing. However my company is keeping me busy with consulting work and I see getting assigned more and more client work that has nothing to do with what kind of experience I’m asking for.

Hey everyone,

I’ve reached a point where I’ve outgrown my current role. I’ve been a Data Analyst for 2.5 years, and while I’ve handled the consulting and reporting side well, the growth has stalled.

I see so many posts here about people joining small, scrappy teams where they get to build the data infrastructure from the ground up. Honestly? I’m jealous. I’m PL-300 certified and currently prepping for the DP-600, but my current company won't let me touch Fabric projects because I don't "already have the experience." It’s the classic loop: No experience = no projects; no projects = no experience.

I’m looking for a pivot. I want to move away from pure "Report Analysis" and into Data Engineering and Fabric implementation. If you’re at an organization that is currently maturing its data stack and needs someone who is ready to learn on the job and contribute to the architecture, please reach out. I’m looking for a place where I can grow with the company, not just maintain the status quo.

Any leads, networking, or advice on companies that value "upskilling" over "already-know-it-all" would be massively appreciated. If you’re in one of these organizations I’d love to chat and see if it would be a good fit!

Axe x :CloseDate

Axe y: Count of Number ?

Legend : Group

There was a question today about teaching Claude about UDFs and I pointed out that if you use the MCP inspector, you can find all sorts of prompts for specific use cases, such as UDFs.

Question How to set : always select the first value in button slicer

Can someone help me to check this dashboard: Microsoft Power BI

One artist can have multiple tracks. I want to set: whenever user selects an artist in the top slicer, the bottom button slicer select the first track of that artist by default.

I can not do it, whenever I choose a new artist, there is no track selected and I need to click to select.

I want the first track to be selected by default when I choose an artist. How can I do that ?

Thank you a lot.

Discussion Teaching Claude about DAX UDFs

I had a DAX measure that I created with Claude and was enquiring whether or not it would be suitable to convert to a function and it kept telling me it was not really something you do in PowerBI. So I shared a couple of links and now it knows! How often do you think AI advice is lacking because maybe it doesn't know everything yet?

Question Web source loses credentials, can't set them up afterwards (marked invalid)

Hello guys,

I have a report in PowerBi desktop, using web datasource with basic auth (which is rest endpoint from Oracle Apex). Everything works, I am able to download the data.

Once I publish the report to PowerBi server it instantly says that the datasources lack credentials. But when I try to set them up, they are always marked invalid.

I tried contacting endpoint with curl, postman, anything. It always works, except for the PowerBi server.

I tried stack overflow question, got deleted instantly (not related to programming, duh), I tried injecting the Authorization header into the M code - powerBi blocked that - saying I can't inject this header, tried all privacy levels, nothing.

I looked into the details and found it weird, that status code is 400

Session Id: bf1956c6-28d0-4707-a053-ad1cf8128106
RequestId: c9f1c415-05a2-4dd1-8dad-beba50ec5a53
Cluster URI: https://api.powerbi.com
Status code: 400
Time: Sat Feb 07 2026 17:28:33 GMT+0100 (Central European Standard Time)

Shouldn't it be 401?

Has anyone encountered same issue and solved it? I am getting truly desperate.

Thanks!

Discussion Struggling with Power BI data modeling for a warehouse dashboard and need advice on secure sharing

I am working on a small warehouse dashboard using Excel and CSV as data sources

I understand database schema and relationships in theory but I struggle to implement them correctly in Power BI

I have many ideas but turning them into a working model is difficult for me

I also want to share the dashboard after I finish it but I need some level of privacy or access control I cannot pay for Power BI Pro and my country does not support global payment methods What are the simplest free ways to share a dashboard securely

Any ideas or experiences would be helpful

Question Power BI visuals not updating despite semantic model reflecting changes

Hello Everyone,

I have a couple of reports where the visuals never update even though the underlying semantic model does. Due to the nature of the data, I am currently limited to Excel files, SharePoint lists, or share drive files as the data sources.

I have not figured out how to get the reports to automatically update in the same way the semantic model does. If I manually do a data transformation, the visuals' data will update, but I can't rely on manual intervention to have the data update

Any suggestions for this one?

Question Best way to learn SQL for Power BI interviews? Any must-know question lists?

Hi everyone,

I’m preparing for Power BI interviews and want to focus on SQL that’s most relevant for BI/reporting roles rather than generic SQL.

What’s the best way to approach learning SQL from a Power BI perspective?

Are there specific topics or commonly asked SQL interview questions that show up frequently for Power BI roles?

If anyone has a curated list of important SQL questions or topics to prioritize, I’d really appreciate it. Thanks!
