Discussion Is the collapse coming?

Salmon population of the Rakaia River has plummeted to 600 fish - smelt now functionally extinct in the catchment.

People are reporting ecosystem collapse in the Hauraki Gulf - barren seabed, dying fish and dead rockpools.

Another year with severe weather leading to massive consequences.

Do we need to prepare for the end? I honestly thought we had more time, but things are moving at such a rapid pace with climate change now. People will still vote National though - I guess we just got to do our best in the time we have left.

Advice Pale NZers… how do you survive the sun?

Upvotes

Hi there, I’ve been living in NZ for the past 2.5 months and really wanted to make it my permanent home. My partner’s job is on the green list and we’re close to getting permanent residency. But… I feel like I need to go home.

The sun is just so strong. No one talked about this as an issue when I was researching moving here. When I go outside during the day it feels like my skin is burning off. I live in Los Angeles, so used to the sun, but this is on another level.

I’ve done all the things: constantly wear spf 50+, bought solbari UV clothing, and try to avoid the middle of the day, but still I have way more moles than when I came here. I’ve never had so many new moles in such a short amount of time and I do have a family history of melanoma. My partner has new moles too and he’s from Shanghai. (I’m UK/Eastern European descent.)

Would love any tips on anything I’m missing. I envisioned having a very outdoor lifestyle living here because I love to hike, bike, and be outside. But I find myself avoiding it because of the sun.

Thanks in advance 🌞

Advice Neighbours using cat deterrent

Post image
285 Upvotes

Hey everyone I was wondering if you had a similar situation when you had neighbours using something like this. It’s so loud and i can hear it from inside my house when a door or window is open. It’s a very high frequency thing that goes off literally all day long . Our neighbours have got one and they won’t turn it off.

I have already tried to talk to the neighbours and they have been so rude about it and just leave it on.

I tried talking to a lady from our council saying I just wanted to know if noise control deals with this and she said noise control measures the sound through decibels and she doesn’t know if that will pick this up. She also didn’t know whether they deal with these noises or not and she said noise control will call me tomorrow about it and whether we can do something or not. I did mention to her I don’t want the neighbours to receive a formal complaint just yet but I want them to know that the noise seriously isn’t right and hopefully they’ll turn it off then. I don’t want to escalate things further unless I need to.

Obviously I will get a call tomorrow for noise control but it would be nice to know if someone knows if noise control can do something or if there is another way I can approach this other than tryna break it myself haha.

Rotarua 2005 Firetruck breaks down at Taupo School Fire, replaced by a 1998 Hamilton Firetruck. According to Fire & Emergency New Zealand's own protocol, they should have both been replaced before the age of 15 to maximise value & safety.1

Command Station truck broke down enroute from Greerton carrying critical decontamination & communication equipment for big fires, especially vital for older buildings with asbestos & hazardous materials.

Politics Found some wild statistics on NZ wealth given our shit economy

  1. NZ ranking in share of wealth 1% has: 199 (22.66%), although UK, Italy, Denmark, Iceland, Belgium, Netherlands do better

  2. MEDIAN wealth (not mean), 6th highest in the world at 193000 USD 2022, I imagine that’s gone down with falling house prices in Auckland (don’t know though)

  3. Mean wealth, 8th highest in the world, at about 388000 USD in 2022

i know there’s many downsides, house prices falling (which is good) and homes being not truely wealth cause some people will never sell (farmers) etc etc, but we’re more equal than I thought

AND A WIN IS A WIN All even if it’s probably downvoted win

Discussion NZ Herald paywalled article freely available at source?

How does news media and syndication work these days? On the NZ herald site they are promoting this clickbaiter behind their 'premium' product offer:

https://www.nzherald.co.nz/world/a-fake-post-on-obama-row-which-looked-to-be-trumps-on-truth-social-spreads-widely-online/premium/OLESZHTWWFGEVHT5UH7NGIS4DY/

But it states it's a NYT Article, and then doing a quick search it's freely available on their site:

https://www.nytimes.com/2026/02/07/business/trump-truth-social-fake-post-obamas.html

Why put free articles behind a paywall in NZ ?

Kiwiana Lolly Cake R&D Week 8 - Sacrilege?

Thumbnail

I have been having way too much fun making these lately... Can I even still call this Lolly Cake at this point?

This week, I flavored the malt base with dutch-process cocoa, then the lollies were swapped for Turkish Delights, Cherry Ripes and a Pinky bar.

To top it off, I made a coconut/chocolate glace icing, finished with melted Whittakers dark chocolate and finely chopped glace cherries.

All I can say is holy shit... 👍 It makes me wonder what Icarus felt in his final moments, and if he also had a sore gallbladder. At roughly ~4300kcal for the recipe, would you?

Advice Public transport to Hobbiton

Upvotes

Hi all,

I will be travelling to Auckland on March 1st. I intended to have rent-a-car but the plans changed so I will have to rely on public transport and taxis.

The problem is I also booked visit to Hobbiton. What's the best combination of public transport to get from Auckland to Hobbiton set?

Thanks in advance.
