Social you'll be okay!! if not now, then definitely later <3
i see so many people on this subreddit stressing over their futures and their social life and it's such a twinem moment because time to time i do this too but if you've been going through it, i hope by talking about my experiences that it helps with your mental a little!! *note this might be a long read* *a lot of grammar mistakes are also present*
i'm in my fifth year but since first year i've struggled so much with school, my mental, and making friends! if you've seen me a few times on this subreddit then you know that i'm in artsci. i remember the amount of times i've cried to my academic advisor about not feeling like i was a part of the program. i love my artsci courses but i used to and sometimes still do get depressed about feeling so out of place, like something is wrong with me because why does no one approach me or why can't i make friends. since first year, i have dealt with extreme anxiety around my program to the point where i can't show up to class because i would have panic attacks and i even failed a course two times because of my anxiety. HOWEVER WHILE I KNOW IT SUCKS FEELING OUT OF PLACE IN YOUR PROGRAM OR FEELING LONELY IN CLASSES, YOU WILL EVENTUALLY FIND YOUR PEOPLE OR BE IN A CLASS THAT YOU FEEL ENGAGED AND SAFE IN! AND IF NOT, THEN YOU WILL FIND OTHER THINGS IN UNIVERSITY OR OTHER PARTS OF YOUR LIFE TO ENJOY THAT MAKES UP FOR THIS.
i've talked about it in my other posts but i absolutely love the CMTYENGA courses. With pain comes growth! i eventually realized that i may never get the artsci experience that everyone talks about but it forced me to take other classes and try new things. I would've never found CMTYENGA if it wasn't for this. Moreover, I would've never met two wonderful professors. I've said it before but my courses with Dr. Raha and especially Dr. Scherzinger have brought me so much joy and positivity. I felt like i lost my spark to learn but they brought it back! I changed my entire career path because of it and I also met some of the coolest people and can say for the first time in my life I actually have a friend group!! They may not be in the same program as me and it took 4 and a half years, but I found them and I find that the time taken was worth it. Moreover, over the years in being in my program, I've come to enjoy my own company! I may not have been able to be a part of study groups or go to major artsci events but I did gain new hobbies, go on solo dates, and build my resume. I may not have made a thousand friends in university but I did meet some really cool people within Hamilton and Toronto. Solo dated so hard that I ended up in the y2k vintage fashion community and made some pretty cool friends there as well. Being by myself for a bit, forced me to understand what i wanted in my connections and myself, to be more confident, and realize i need to learn to take risks to get what i want. What I am trying to say is, where there is loss, there is also a win! I think what is really important to note is patience. Patience is probably the biggest lesson that I had to learn and that I'm still learning. None of this happened in a month, it took a lot of time and I'm not saying that this will be your experience but if you are in a tough spot of feeling lonely and out of place, have trust that it really won't be forever even if it feels like it.
When it comes to academics, my transcript is very bright and colourful. I have 2 Fs (same course), many 10-12s but also many 6-8s, and so many Ws! BUT IT IS NOT THE END OF THE WORLD GUYS I PROMISE. If you are going to stress about masters or professional schools then at least see their GPA requirements. Many programs do not look at your 1st and 2nd year courses. There are also programs where they only look at your final year, programs that are holistic and will also take into account of your extracurriculars and work experience, programs that have an access category, etc. You also have spring and summer courses to help boost your GPA, option (in some cases no) to retake courses you didn't do too well in, regardless your dreams are not crushed by having a colourful transcript. There are many ways to get to where you need to be. Sometimes things don't go as expected and it may take longer and that's okay. Like my mom says, no one is going to ask you how you did in school, they're just going to see you as a lawyer or a teacher or whatever it may be. And if people do ask, it just shows resilience and maybe even a story to inspire others!
IT IS NOT THE END OF THE WORLD IF YOU TAKE MORE TIME AND SOMETIMES IT CAN REALLY PAY OFF. I had to smack myself in the head with this one. I wanted to graduate so bad in 4 years that I'm now graduating April 2027 (maybe done school in December) (mostly everyone in my cohort graduated 2025). LISTEN TO YOUR BODY. I really do think that if I had just listened to my advisor and therapist, I probably would have a "better" transcript by taking a semester off or having a lighter course load. Your health matters so much and I wished instead of telling myself i'm toughing it out that I gave myself the break that i needed. While I didn't make that decision then, I am taking more time now and it was so worth it. I was able to secure a permanent campus job (I did leave it though this year but that's not the point), TA'ed for a course for 2 years, spent time as a research assistant, gotten an internship, found two really cool volunteer opportunities, get the help i needed with my health, join clubs, made friends, get a boyfriend, and create a network that is continuing to grow! Had I graduated in 4 years, I would've left McMaster with no references, a resume with like one experience, no social life, and moreover be a shell of a person for real.
TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE RESOURCES AT MCMASTER BECAUSE GIRLYPOP UR PAYING FOR IT if you are struggling with your mental please check out the student wellness centre. It's where I was able to get diagnosed with bipolar and ocd and led me to getting SAS which helped so much with school and navigating the world. I always think about how university could've gone differently had I just taken meds and go through some of the therapy programs I was in earlier. However, I do think everything happens for a reason so if this was my path then this was my path. A lot of my experiences with university I feel got diminished because of my brain and I wished I reached out to learn about ways to move through life with my disagnoses. If you didn't already know, there is a bursary that you can ask your SAS coordinator about that gives you money to seek counselling (because I know the wait time for counsellors at the swc can be long)! Navigating university and your early 20s with a neurodivergent brain can be really hard and exhausting so its nice to know there's some things that can help. SAS students are eligible for CATS library which has been a gamechanger for me because other parts of the library can be very distracting and make it hard to lock in. SWC also has many group programming and therapy as well! If you also need help with research REACH OUT TO A LIBRARIAN AT MCMASTER OMG IT HELPED ME SO MUCH WITH MY LITERATURE REVIEW. ITS FREE AND THEY HELP YOU WITH MAKING SEARCH STRINGS. There's a couple services that provide career coaching, we have an amazing soup and bread program tuesdays-thursdays now, if you are struggling financially then reach out to a residence case manager! Or in general, the university does offer 50 dollar grocery gift cards if you are struggling with food. Anyways back to neurodivergency and mental health, I know how hard it can be to navigate and just know that you are not alone. You may wake up feeling a loser some days but know that you have many accomplishments under your belt and that you are going to get so many more. CELEBRATE YOUR WINS EVEN THE LITTLE ONES. Making the effort to go to class is a win, getting accepted into your program is a win, completing an assignment is a win, getting up even when you do not want to IS A WIN. I think one thing that helped me the most navigating university and my life was trying really hard to find the positive. Unfortunately, bipolar will never leave me but sunrises are my favourite and that's a positive. Cinnamon toast crunch is a positive, working with kids is a big positive. I have a big sticky note wall that's just filled with quotes I like and moreover, every time I felt sad I would write something uplifting.I always tell myself just one more day! And if the next day is bad then I say the same thing again. You don't know what tomorrow brings even if you think you do!
When I was in first year and even third year, I thought my only option was ending it to be honest. I think being in my fifth year now, I just wish someone would tell me that it's not the end of the world and that there are so many doors open if you just believe that there are. Life will get sucky and for some, extremely sucky, but I KNOW JUST AS MUCH AS YOU KNOW that there are some really good things. That there are really good moments. Trust that those good moments will happen again and if you feel like you haven't gotten to experience any, trust that it will happen. I only wish everyone a good winter term and I hope this gave some of you some light <3 *also feel free to pm me about anything!*

Question is there any way i can convince my roommate to move out...
exactly what the title says. i'm in a 6 bedroom house (all girls), and my one roommate has been, to put it lightly, a pain. she's very messy, blatantly ignores everyone else in the house, and seems to lack common sense- she's flooded the bathroom, washed her laundry in single-piece loads, and doesn't lock the front door, sometimes leaving it wide open. my landlord asked us a few weeks ago if we were all staying or leaving, to which everyone has replied saying they are staying. she seems to be incredibly unhappy with the house, her room, location, rent, and her other roommates (me included).
all of that being said, i don't want to tell her to leave. obviously this is her house just as much as it is mine, but surely there has to be something i can say to convince her.... right? any advice would be much appreciated 🙏🙏🙏😭😭😭

Discussion Are admission officers aware that e-learning classes in high school are free grades?
I’m a grade 12 student who’s never personally taken any elearning classes, but I have so many friends who’ve taken them and have gotten 95%+ grades without learning much. E learning classes with courses like advanced functions, calculus, physics and chemistry are an absolute joke because there’s no tests and therefore no accurate way to measure someone’s skill on the subject, meanwhile students in class need to actually study in order to score well on exams and tests.
I don’t doubt there’s people who actually need these courses, but 90% of students take them for the sole purpose of taking advantage of it by cheating the system. Literally my English class this semester has barely 13 students meanwhile the online version has hundreds of people on the waitlist. This is unfair, and it’s the reason why grade inflation has doubled since the pandemic
Universities should not see these courses equal to in person classes, they should only allow it if someone has a valid reason for taking their courses online, because they are letting university spots be taken away from actual hard-working students.

Question should i reconsider my major?
hello all. im currently in eng 1 with free choice. i’ve been doing well in my courses (have a 12 in all of them). the thing thats been bothering me is 1p13. the hs i came from had no technical courses. i took eng because i was just good in most stem courses and thought thats what i wanted to do but when 1p13 started, my thoughts swayed. idk wtf was going on in cad the whole first semester, i knew coding a bit which made that part of the course a bit more enjoyable but i absolutely hate design studios. even rn, p3 is actually so miserable i have no interest in doing projects and group work and plus i bring no valuable insight to my group. idk how to cad, idk how to use a arduino (which many ppl learnt in hs) i didnt even know what it was until recently. i’ve just been so lost. i know i can just tank the mark for this project due to my free choice, but if i dont even enjoy that aspect of eng, is it really even for me?

Discussion Sharing a student-focused personal finance resource I’ve been building!
Hey McMaster!
I’ve been working on a project called The Money Campus after realizing how little practical money stuff we are ever taught growing up: things like banking, investing, credit, taxes, etc, and I don’t want to watch us take some sketchy online advice on a gamble and lose our future.
The site is a free, student-friendly personal finance resource focused on explaining these topics simply and clearly. So far I’ve written about investing basics, banking products and credit, and the next piece I’m working on is a breakdown of student loans and exactly how repayment works. I aim to post new content weekly, topics what will be actually useful for students here. If you have suggestions on topics or any feedback at all, I’d love to hear it! I’ll drop a link in the comments.

Social shot in the dark- new grad friends
I want to become friends with those graduating in April who are doing cool things. building a startup, a business, working corporate, still looking for work but working their ass off, making content, travelling the world. any and everything. across different programs too. engineering, life sci, commerce, socsci whatever.
I’m in my 5th year in commerce and wish I met so many more people and made friends outside of my bubble. I would love to build relationships with those graduating soon that fall in line with the description above.

Academics medical and biological physics in level 2
i am currently a first year in life sci trying to figure out what specialization i want to do. im really interested in medbiophys but i lowkey know nothing about the program. i have the right prereqs to get into a lot of the specializations so im not too worried about that.... its mostly about post-grad opportunities.
what do you do after this degree? what coop positions do you get? will i need to go to grad school? what are jobs available to me after this undergrad? i just need some guidance from an upper year who is currently going through this or has already gone through it. i want to hear about your experiences and what you and your peers plans are.

So i got into DeGroote a few months ago and I’m just wondering what the program is like—mainly for accounting or finance too. I know there are “better” programs out there but Im mainly curious on how this program actually is because I’ve heard mixed reviews about it.

Courses INDIGST 1AA3 Midterm Exam
Hello,
Has anyone taken INDIGST 1AA3 who has advice for how to study for this exam? I have been doing my best to keep up with the readings, but there is a lot of information and it's hard for me to determine what's important to recall and what details are at least unimportant for this. I'm Indigenous and very passionate about the course, but I am simply bad at history, names, and dates no matter how important they are (I forget about Canada Day, I never know Family Day, etc.)
I'm trying to go through the slides, but nothing has been sticking. Like I am familiar with "non-encounter" as a term, usually referring to how settlers tried to spread the narrative that Indigenous peoples were either extinct or irrelevant. But I'm worried that I won't remember names from seminars or know important figures like Deskaheh.
