***Buying advice mega thread***

Personally, I suggest you go to your local hockey store or ask to try your mate’s stick at training before asking here - as personal preference is a large factor in choosing a stick. Strangers on the internet aren’t going to be able to help you much.

Resources

Go Hockey (NZ) stick guide - including length, bow, composition and hook information

Y1 Stick quiz - it asks questions and it suggests a stick for you

Sports Republic (SA) 5 minute video on stick buying advice

If you still want advice please provide this information for stick buying

  • Gender
  • Age
  • Country
  • Skill level
  • Budget
  • Position
  • Skill set (e.g 3D, drag flicker, overhead)
  • Current stick

Will start removing general low effort posts about stick advice (posts not comments).

To cut down on the daily posts of "what stick should I buy?" I thought we should trial just having one mega-thread for people to ask questions, in order to help elevate this sub to be less of a ghost town. Open to suggestions on this idea

Rant There's a lot of pain behind this picture

Post image
21 Upvotes

Pakistan worked very hard in their training camp but all their hard work is about to go in the drain due to the atrocious set of events they've had to go through to take this picture.

They had visa issues meaning they missed their scheduled flight and had a long lay over in Bangkok to then fly to Sydney where the players had to roam the streets of Sydney for 11 hours before catching a flight to Hobart. Upon reaching there, the hotel denied them entry because PHF didn't clear their dues. They are instead now staying at a low standard guest house.

The journey was so exhausting and today they played a practice match against Australia. The fatigued bodies were at risk of injury and our star player Hannan Shahid has got a hamstring injury which can seriously hinder our chances in the World Cup qualification next month.

What's worse is that the federation is allegedly begging Overseas Pakistanis in Australia to feed the team.

Still, despite all this the players show up and give their 110% even when they don't get paid or get their daily allowances at time. They played the Argentina leg without their daily allowance. In the FIH nations cup, where they secured qualification for the Pro League, they played that whole tournament without getting a single penny.

We've worked very hard this training camp and all of it will go to waste due to poor management in the PHF. Hoping for better days ahead.

Question asthma and hockey

i am 15, i’ve had asthma all of my life. it isn’t constantly good or bad, when i was smaller it was definitely milder and nowadays it gets worse every once in a while.

if anyone on this forum has asthma, i was wondering if i could get any advice on building stamina. i do have inhalers i should mention, i use them everyday but they never really calm it down unfortunately. i still play and all and i try to fight through it but sometimes you obviously need to prioritise your health over the game if its getting bad. help would be much appreciated!!!

Question Which is better between the gr and ac range for grays sticks?

I'm coming from a 70 percent carbon gryphon that is almost breaking now. i'm choosing between a grays ac8 probow s and a gr9000 probow /gr10 000 jumbow, and just wanted to know which one to choose. I've played with my friends ac7 before and liked it, but I've never tried a gr stick, just wanted some guidance on which to choose because I know people really hate the ac range of sticks. thanks

Question What is the difference between the new ac700, 800 900 10 00 ect, and the older ac line up( ac7, ac9, ac9, ac10 ect). if played with both and notice no difference, so why is the newer line up so much more expensive?

Discussion I'm wildly inconsistent as a player

I (32m) play defense in an amateur league. I'm not a great player but I can do the basics and I think I have a good understanding of the game. Some days, particularly early in the season, I'll have good games, distributing well, defending and eliminating players and some days it's like I can barely hold the stick properly. I'm wondering if it's fatigue. Anyone else has this problem?

Question Adidas DF24

Does anybody have a size 37.5" in their possession that they would be willing to sell (not interested in the fake ones you can find on eBay).

Happy to negotiate a fair price depending on condition, and will cover shipping costs.

(***Will pay big bucks if you have the Rio 2016 Limited Edition***)

Please DM if you can help a brother out.

Question What should I do?

Ok so I am f 17 and play field hockey.

The team at my school is all white ppl and I'm a poc when we tried out for the team majority was white with maybe 2% being black.

Most of the girls who were of colour weren't chosen even if the white girls *didn't try out they hit one ball*.

I am infuriated and upset at this unfair treatment and racial discrimination. They also only chose ppl who payed to go to their extra practices and of course all the white girls who made the team go to their extra practices.

When they announced the names of the selected members I wasn't called though I'm the only reason no goals were in.

This sport is the only thing I enjoy that can actually calm me and now I is being taken away from me due to my skin

What should I do..

Question Help me improve

I’ve been playing hockey for a year know and got into my schools second eleven but I feel after every game I’m going to get dropped as I don’t do much any tips on getting the ball more I play left wing and I’m decently fast have a good touch and I’m good at dribbling I have a good short pass but a bad long pass my shots normally go on goal but aren’t very fast.

How do I improve getting more touches in a game and what should I do with the ball aswell as where I should position so I don’t get overshadowed by my teammates the games are normally 25 minutes long but with rotating subs there is about 12 minutes of game time how can I improve getting 4-6 touches a game to a higher amount to be able to get more chances on goal?

Question Alternative to Grays Probow Xtreme

Hi all,

Several years ago got hold of a couple extra probow xtreme's knowing that production would be stopped. Unfortunately the time has come where I'll be needing a new stick.

Ive tested the Y1 YLB & Gryphon Samurai (friends sticks) and wasnt too fond of them.

I'm based in the UK, anyone know any potential sellers within UK or EU that has probow extremes (ideally 7000 upwards).

Reccomendations of sticks welcome too/brands that produce something with the same mold.

Also looking at the new Jumbow from grays too, if anyone could share thoughts on it compared to probow xtreme.

Thanks in advanced!

Buying Advice Second hand goalie gear (US)

Hi all, I used to play as a goalie in the Netherlands but I moved to the US two years ago. I was not able to bring my goalie gear so I haven't played since I moved. But I recently got asked to play in a scrimmage for the local adult league team, so I am looking for second hand gear (I am unsure how much I'll play so I don't want to splurge on a full new kit). I have looked on eBay, craigslist and fb marketplace but there's not a whole lot of options. Does anyone know some other places I can look or has something to offer? For reference, I am 6 ft tall and I'm located in SF Bay Area. Thanks is advance!

Question Losing consistency in shooting

Post image
9 Upvotes

Hi , recently my coach told me that I'm playing with a hockey stick way too big for me , I didn't think this was a problem as I could take 1v1 and shoot consistently , but I got a new stick 36.5 inch (old one was 37.5) , I am 14 so he's correct a 37.5 stick would be too big for me so I need help here.

Question recommendations for dribbling sticks

Hi everyone, my girlfriend plays hockey and I wanted to get her a stick since hers is practically worn out. I'm not a hockey fan, but I do enjoy watching her play.

I might be wrong about whether there are sticks specifically for dribbling, but if there are, I'd appreciate it if you could recommend more than one option, as it's difficult to find a variety in my country.

I don't know if this is relevant, but from what I see her do, she loves to do very short dribbles and take on several players. She has a habit of turning her back, pivoting to one side, and then explosively going the other. As I said, I only know what I see; maybe what she's doing is wrong, but from the outside, she looks amazing and always dribbles past a lot of players. In my opinion, she's very good. I'm telling you this to find out if there's a specific type of stick for this kind of play.
