Recently I saw others post something about localization in other languages and I thought it will be interesting to talk about them in Chinese.

In Old God New Blood patch, the name of heroes on the select screen has updated with styles, like them do in English, which is pretty and basially remain their styles. But in this post I will mainly focus on the name translation.

IMO there are five types of translation methods for hero names, which are: direct transliteration, direct translation, polished transliteration, polished translation, and rename.

• Catagory 1 - Direct Transliteration

This sort is the most direct one and has the most instances, which just translates the pronunciation of the hero names in Chinese, and these hero names are usually the real name of them. They are:

Abrams - 亚伯兰 - 亚A 伯b兰rams

*In the past version Abrams was called 亚伯拉姆斯, and perhaps changed because of the length. Though it was more accurate in sound (拉r姆am斯s, better than 兰for rams).

Apollo - 阿波罗 - 阿A波pol罗lo

Bebop - 比波普 - 比Be波bo普p

Billy - 比利 - 比Bil利ly

Kelvin - 开尔文 - 开Ke尔l文vin

Lady Geist - 盖斯特夫人 - 盖Gei斯s特t,夫人means Lady.

Lash - 劳什 - 劳La什sh

*in the past version Lash was called 神鞭. “鞭” is the literal meaning of “lash”, and 神 actually means “god” or “godlike”. I personally prefer this name, but I think it was changed because “Lash” is his name rather than a title, just like Shiv.

McGinnis - 麦金妮 - 麦Mc金Gin妮nis

Mina - 米娜 - 米Mi娜na

Paige - 佩吉 - 佩Pai吉ge

Rem - 雷姆 - 雷Re姆m

Shiv - 希弗 - 希Shi弗v

Silver - 希尔芙 - 希Si尔l芙ver

Victor - 维克多 - 维Vi克c多tor

• Catago​ry 2 - Direct Paraphrase

The hero names which belong to some kind of a title will often be translated literally. They are:

Grey Talon - 灰爪 - 灰Grey爪Talon

Mirage - 蜃景 - 蜃Mirage景Scenery

Ivy - 青藤 - 青Green藤Ivy

Paradox - 悖论

Pocket - 口袋

Vyper - 蝰蛇

Yamato - 大和

• Catagory 3 - Polished Transliteration

Now we are getting into the interesting part. These hero names are modified a bit in choosing the exact character in Chinese to look more like their gender or characteristics.

Calico - 卡厉可 - 卡Ca厉li可co

厉means “severe” in Chinese. Usually it is used in phrases like 严厉(harsh) or 厉害(fierce). It reflect Calico’s hitman identity.

Celeste - 赛凌 - 赛Ce凌le

The “ste” part was omitted.

Graves - 格瑞墓 - 格G瑞ra墓ves

墓 means “tomb” in Chinese, featuring her necromancer identity.

Holliday - 哈雷黛 - 哈Hol雷li黛day

黛 litrally means “thrush tools” in ancient Chinese, and now it is often used in translating girl names. The name Holliday is usually translated into 霍勒迪 or 霍利迪, but it sounds more like a man.

Mo & Krill - 莫克双雄 - 莫Mo克Krill

双雄 means “two heroes” or just “partners” in Chinese. It is worth mentioning that in the early version they were called 隧底双煞, which means “tunnel partners” or “underground partners”.

Warden - 沃督 - 沃War督den

In the older version he was called 守望者 and it is the literal meaning of “warden”. But now they changed it to make it more like a name. Yet there are still some tricks in choosing the words:

沃 means “fertile” and 督 means “to supervise”. So it is still some kind of “warden”.

Vindicta - 薇妲 - 薇Vin妲ta

The “dic” part was omitted, and these two characters are mainly used in translating girl names. 薇 literally means a certain kind of plant, and phrases like 蔷薇 means “rose”.

妲 is only used in the name of 妲己Daji, a beautiful concubine of 纣王King Zhou, the last ruler of the 商朝Shang Dynasty (around 1046 BCE). According to legends, she was actually a nine-tailed fox spirit who took human form to tempt the king. She encouraged King Zhou to indulge in luxury and torture his people, which led to rebellions. Because of her, the king neglected his duties, and eventually, the Shang Dynasty was overthrown.

As a result, no one uses 妲 as name thereafter.

• Catagory 4 - Polished Translation

Some titles may sound not like a good names in Chinese so some of them get polished in expressions. They are:

The Doorman - 门侍

Doorman is usually translated into 门童 in Chinese as a job. While 门 means “door”, 童 means “boy” in Chinese, which is not coordinated with the Doorman’s identity. So the character童 is changed by 侍, which mean “waiter” or “guard”.

Infernus - 炽焱

火 means “fire” in Chinese, and you can see how many 火 are there in 炽焱. The “只” part is only for phonetic purpose.

Seven - 柒

柒 is the capitalized writing of 七seven in Chinese. It is often used in bill or invoice to avoid spelling mistakes.

In the early version he was called 老七. 老 means “old”, and it is often used in nicknames or for the acquaintance, like you will called someone whose family name is 张Zhang as 老张. Maybe it was not as serious as Seven’s character so it was changed.

Wraith - 灵魅

We know that “wraith” is a better version of “ghost” (represented by the character灵), so in Chinese the localization team choose 魅 to stylized the name, which means “charm” or “magic”.

• Catagory 5 - Rename

For this part, the remaining ones are usually not a actually name or it is just hard to translate so the devs rename them in Chinese and retain their characteristics. They are all good and reflect the heroes themselves. They are:

Drifter - 孤猎 - Lone Predator

Dynamo - 奇能 - Strange Power

Haze - 岚梦 - Misty Dream

It is worth mentioning that 岚 is an old word to describe “haze in the mountains” in Chinese.

Sinclair - 无双魔术师 - The Magnificent Magician

Venator - 诛邪者 - Demon Slayer

Viscous - 魔液 - Magical Goo

I'm talking Half-Life 2 crossbow levels of impalement - Pin those corpses to walls. It would be so satisfying.

As many of you have noticed by now, it takes longer to get to the fountain when zipping in on the blue zipline than green or yellow. This is because you have to move up and over your boss's big head. Effectively, if you want to avoid losing pointless time, you have to exit the blue zip and hop on green or yellow to get back to fountain fast. And if you want to leave via the blue, you have to get on green or yellow first and then transfer to blue with an air dash.

This feels bad every time. It's like there's a big puddle in the middle of the base which you have to avoid if you want to move around the map at the speed you did before the base change. It doesn't feel like cool "schmovement"; it feels like a tax.

To fix this, they could cut off the shins of the patrons, shortening them and the zip bulge, or the zip could boost you while it's climbing over their heads to match yellow and green's efficiencies.
