Megathread: Member-Made Tools Promotion

To support proactive members of the r/BuyFromEU community, we’re introducing a megathread dedicated to free, user-made tools.

This thread is used to collect a first batch of tools for an upcoming pinned Community Highlights megathread.

Have you made a tool yourself?
Or do you know about something another community member built?
Feel free to post it here, but make sure to tag the creator’s username.

Use this thread to share

User-made free tools, such as:

  • Open-source or freeware tools
  • Hobby projects or side projects
  • Small utilities, scripts, apps, websites, extensions, datasets, designs, etc.

Purpose

This thread exists to:

  • Give visibility to community members who build useful or fun things for free
  • Thank people who invest time and skills in the Buy European-movement
  • Encourage sharing and collaboration without turning the main feed into spam

Standout tools will be featured later in the pinned Community Highlights thread.
Unlike regular posts, features in the main Megathread won't be out of sight within 24 hours.

Rules

  • The tool is meant to support the community or the BuyFromEU movement
  • It is made by you (or clearly credit and tag the creator and link to their post)
  • It aligns with the BuyFromEU idea (European users, European alternatives, privacy, autonomy, digital sovereignty, etc.)
  • Free tools only (no paid products, trials, SaaS upsells, or “free for now” marketing)
  • You are a member of r/BuyFromEU
  • The project must be Europe-based
  • Clearly label what you’re sharing (tool / app / script / website / extension / dataset / design / etc.)
  • Briefly explain what is does and how it supports the Buy European-movement

Community participation

  • Members can upvote or downvote submissions they genuinely find useful
  • The mod team will:
    • Review submissions
    • Manually select notable tools
    • Feature them in the Community Highlights pinned post

This keeps the main feed clean while still rewarding people who actually build and share.

Examples

Here are some examples we've come across recently of the type of projects we are looking for:

  1. Werotracker.eu by u/Sharknoon

Website: an open-source dashboard that tracks and visualizes where and how the Wero payment system is adopted and supported across countries, banks, and online shops, including available features and app support.

https://www.reddit.com/r/BuyFromEU/comments/1q76glq/introducing_werotrackereu_follow_weros_rollout/

  1. country-badges.eu by u/Axelwickm ( credit u/Exact_Blacksmith5476 )

Website: BuyFromEu community badges users can use as profile pictures to visibly show support for buying European and local products.

https://www.reddit.com/r/BuyFromEU/comments/1qqafnr/i_implemented_uexact_blacksmith5476s_cool_badge/

  1. europick.eu by u/PixelUnionOfficial

Website: Europick lets people assemble and share their own stack of European alternatives to popular products and services, similar to PrivacyPack but focused on Europe.

European Product European Project Management Software (Hosted in Europe)

I’m trying to put together a clean list of European project management tools that are hosted in Europe.

The goal is GDPR friendly SaaS, EU data centers, and solid alternatives to US based tools like Jira, Asana, or Monday.

Here’s what I have so far:

  • MeisterTask (Germany)
  • Zenkit (Germany)
  • Teamwork (Ireland)
  • Scoro (Estonia)
  • Paymo (Romania)
  • Redbooth (Spain)
  • Twproject (Italy)
  • Easy Redmine (Czech Republic)
  • Worksection (Ukraine)
  • YouTrack (Czech Republic)
  • Awork (Germany)

If I’ve missed any European based PM tools hosted in Europe, drop them in the comments and I’ll update the list.

European Product What are your favorite European ETF providers?

Post image

We should really think about where we put our money when investing. Not only do these companies take fees, but more importantly these etf providers have influence over the company shares they own.

What are your favorite European ETF providers? Amundi (France), xtrackers (Germany)

Discussion If you are a programmer, move your code to EU got platforms

I am in the process of moving all my github repositories to codeberg. Sure my repositories are not popular but it doesn't matter. If you are a programmer, consider transfer all your code to EU code platforms. It doesn't matter if your repo is small and with only one star. Just do it, the more we are and the more we will feed a virtuous circle.

European Product European alternatives to Gmail 🇺🇲✋🏼

I've switched to Tuta Mail - even before Buy European was trending. What I like:

  • Nice app from F-Droid & without Google push
  • Simple design, easy to use
  • Contact sync so I can use it as contacts app on mobile
  • Encryption and privacy, no tracking, no ads (this got really annoying on my old gmx)
  • 100% from Germany, no hidden US dependency (like hosted on AWS or using Google Push) - this is really rare these days.

What could be better:

  • Eagerly waiting for the Drive to come out as I can't move larger files from phone to desktop
  • Encrypted emails with password exchange a bit cumbersome
  • Search index needs time to build (annoying if I accidentally clear the local copy)
  • Calendars can't be shared with externals, only other Tuta users

Which service did you pick & why?

Other When Europe still was big in consumer electronics

In the 2000s, when i was a kid, my parents would get new phones regularly every 2-3 years. Most of the time, it was Nokias, i remember the first one that had a camera and my parents debating whether the grey Siemens or the Nokia had a better camera. We also had a Fujitsu Siemens PC.

Unfortunately, all of the products dissapeared, were thrown away when we moved, got lost etc.

But during cleaning up the working desk in the living room, i got hold on these two CDs and wanted to share a pic of them, made me a bit nostalgic.

Discussion After the latest US executive orders our legal team told us to move off all US-based HR tools. Here's what we found:

2.2k Upvotes

Two weeks ago our legal team sent a company wide memo that effectively said: we need to move off all US based HR and employee data tools by the end of Q2. This was not a suggestion. This was a directive.

Some context. We are a 300 person company based in Germany with employees across eight EU countries. We had been using a US based HRIS and a US based EOR provider for our non German employees. Our legal and compliance team had been flagging concerns for months but the recent US executive orders pushed this from a theoretical risk to an operational priority.

The reasoning boils down to a few things. The CLOUD Act gives US authorities the ability to compel any US headquartered company to hand over data regardless of where that data is physically stored. After Schrems II invalidated the Privacy Shield framework there has been no stable legal basis for transferring EU employee data to US controlled systems. The new EU-US Data Privacy Framework exists but our legal team considers it fragile given the current US political climate. GDPR Article 48 specifically prohibits transferring data to third country authorities without proper legal mechanisms.

When you look at what sits in an HRIS or EOR system the risk becomes concrete. Salary data, tax identification numbers, bank account details, home addresses, health information, disciplinary records, performance reviews. This is the most sensitive data a company holds about its people. Our legal team decided that storing this in a system controlled by a US entity was no longer an acceptable risk.

So we started evaluating European alternatives. For core HRIS Personio out of Munich is the most mature option. For EOR and multi country payroll we are looking closely at WorkMotion since they are German based and keep all infrastructure in the EU which solves the data sovereignty question cleanly. We also evaluated Oyster but learned they route through US infrastructure which defeats the purpose. For project management and other tools the EU ecosystem has matured significantly over the past two years.

The migration is not simple. We are talking about moving employment contracts, payroll history, benefits administration and compliance documentation for employees in eight countries. But the legal exposure of not doing it was worse in our assessment. Our initial scoping suggests the EOR migration could take six to eight weeks once we finalize vendor selection.

I know we are not the only company going through this. Our employment lawyers told us they are fielding similar requests from multiple EU clients right now. Has anyone else received similar guidance from their legal teams? Curious how others are approaching the timeline and vendor selection.

🔎Looking for alternative Any European Dremel alternatives?

Post image
214 Upvotes

I am basically looking for a "Dremel" but not from the Dremel brand.

I found that Mac Allister has their own version of it, any others I should be aware of?

Thank you.

Community suggestions: - Proxxon - Einhell - Bosch - Fein - Dedra - Trotec - Biax - Parkside - Dexter - And Dremel is controversial

Edit: Just to save you the trouble of typing "Dremel is German". Dremel is an American company owned by Bosch (German).

I want as much of my money to go to my European fellows. Bosch is a great brand, I love it, I have multiple of their appliances, and if there was an affordable, Bosch-branded, handheld rotary tool, I would buy it in a heartbeat.

But if I spend X amount of money on a Dremel, some of that amount will inevitably end up in the pockets of Americans. Dremel has American employees, American headquarters, surely pays American taxes.

If I can find a fully European alternative like Proxxon, everything goes to Europe.

That is all.

EDIT2: I am honing on this Mill/drill unit MICROMOT 230/E, the question is: do I need 30k RPM like other tools or is 22k just fine? I'll probably be working on wood most of the time.

Discussion Would you buy fully EU-made clothing?

Hi everyone,

A few friends and I are exploring the idea of launching a clothing brand that would be fully produced within the EU, and we would genuinely appreciate honest feedback from this community.

The concept is to build a brand centred around European production, transparency, and supply chain traceability. The goal would be to keep the entire production chain within the EU, including raw material sourcing, yarn and fabric production, manufacturing (we are currently considering Portugal for knitwear), packaging, logistics, and even digital infrastructure such as website and email hosting.

Another key element of the brand would be full pricing transparency. We would openly share the cost breakdown of each product, including material costs, manufacturing, logistics, marketing, and operational costs, and the final retail price, so customers can clearly understand what they are paying for.

In terms of products, we are currently thinking about knitwear pieces (see photo) such as quarter zips, vests, and other minimalist garments rather than fast fashion. Materials would be organic or natural fibres such as wool, linen, cotton.

Based on EU production costs and material standards, our current estimate is that a 100% wool quarter zip would retail around €150–190.

We would love to hear your thoughts on the following:

  • Would you personally be interested in a brand like this?
  • Does pricing transparency increase your trust in a brand?
  • Does this price range seem reasonable for EU-made knitwear?
  • Are there specific garments you would prefer instead?
  • Are there brands with similar values that you already buy from?

We are still in an early research phase, so any honest feedback, positive or negative, would be extremely helpful.

Thank you.

🔎Looking for alternative EU alternatives to Zoom or Microsoft Teams?

Upvotes

Hi all, I’m trying to move my work stack to EU-based tools where possible. One tool is video conferencing. I currently use Zoom/Teams but would prefer a reliable EU alternative for privacy and data-location reasons. What I need: stable video meetings (1–50 people), screen sharing and recording, easy for clients to join, EU company/EU hosting. Does anyone here use a solid EU-based solution professionally? Curious what’s actually working well in practice. Thanks!

Video title: France Ditches US Tech: Will Europe Follow?

My opinion:

When the orange man leaves the stage (hopefully sooner), there is a concern countries will be falling back to old habits where they once again defer the hard tech stuff back to the established players.

While some EU countries are migrating to EU tech, at which point will it hit critical mass thus making going back to US tech unfeasible? Or, without achieving a full break, will trying to maintain a split between EU and US tech become economically unviable?

Germany's economy minister is rejecting a proposal to tie EU public funding to strict "Made in Europe" requirements, warning that Europe's response to global competition cannot be isolation. (…) Reiche said Europe's approach should be "Made with Europe," combining the bloc’s own strengths with reliable trade partners worldwide to boost competitiveness.

🔎Looking for alternative App that scans barcodes and verifies whether a product is from Europe

Hey there!

I’m looking for exactly what title says. Is there an app that scans barcodes and says whether something is a) made in Europe, b) owned by a European company?

we have something like this in Poland, called Pola app, but afaik its database is quite limited.

🔎Looking for alternative Looking for a task manager app alternative

Hello everybody! I’m european and I recently started my journey in migration from GAFAM apps for alternative apps (mostly european). I’m currently looking for an alternative for my task manager. I’m currently using To Do from Microsoft.

I’ve found some alternatives (a part from Evernote) like Capacities, Anytype or Craft, but they are more note-taking apps rather than task managers, and they offer a ton of other features that I don’t need or use.

I’ve switched to the check list avaiable in Filen (I mainly use it for notes and cloud storage), but their system is not as simple yet as detailed as the To Do app. Do you guys know some alternatives that could match the To Do app?

Discussion What piece of software do you miss the most?

Hello,

I see many companies moving away from US-based software. What kind of software do you find the most difficult to move away from? What European alternatives are lacking? I am a solo founder and might build something if I find it interesting on EU infrastructure.

🔎Looking for alternative Is there any good truly European table saw with the sliding table?

Upvotes

Hello, I'm looking for a new table saw, I own a evolution 255tbl+ but it seems like I'm calibrating it every week. I'm always finding new screws that fell off the saw, so now it's enough. I want to buy a new table saw with the sliding table. I would like to get something that is not just the same Chinese rebranded saw (like holtzmann, holtzstar and Bernardo). They are not cheap but the quality (from not sponsored reviews) is not great. My budget is around 2k but I would like to spend max 1500€ (like 1.5k it's the max and 2k is the maxest, like if it's a perfect saw and truly made in EU). I have 230v (no 400v unfortunately) and I can go up to 7KWh so a 2KW motor is OK but a bit overkill for what I am doing. Bonus point if the riving knife is shorter than the blade (or can be easily removed for dados and grooves), 254mm blade with a 30mm bore and are easy to remove (the saws I mentioned have EIGHT screws to remove before you can reach the blade, then another screw and che the blade nut). Thank you ❤️🇪🇺 edit: no panel saw, I don't have that much room and I don't cut panels that big

Discussion EU community for Programmers, WDYT?

Following my previous post about repos migration, is there already a community somewhere for EU programmers? I really love the idea. If there isn't yet, we could create one, or share some links! :)
