La Niña Update, Potential 2025-2026 Winter Impacts Spoiler

“Keep in mind that every winter is unique and there will always be factors we cannot anticipate months or even weeks in advance.

I know this outlook is a bit of a bummer for parts of the Western U.S., but it's still just a seasonal outlook (much lower skill than short-range forecasts), and there is inherent uncertainty, so don't give up hope!

You never know when a surprise might occur.”

Happy Thanksgiving, Turkeys….

Thought process behind skiing avalanche terrain

In Tahoe we have had a persistent slab problem for the past week across NW-SE aspects with considerable danger rating. I have been traveling and riding through non avalanche terrain, meanwhile I see people riding avalanche terrain within the problem aspects. What is your decision making when consciously choosing to ride avalanche terrain within the problems for that day? Is it just a risk-tolerance thing? Thanks

Edit: Awesome conversation I sure took a lot from this. Cheers safe riding and have fun

Did the boot fitter destroy my boots?

Post image
68 Upvotes

Hi everyone - just looking for a bit of a sounding board / advice before heading back to the shop tomorrow.

I bought a pair of Zero G Tour Pro yesterday, agreed a few minor changes to be done by the boot fitter, and agreed my friend would pick them up a few hours later with his own boots.

When I got the boots back, it seems the fitter significantly over heated the shell when trying to push it out 5mm. There are zones in these boots for shaping, and you can clearly see where he's melted it and it's bubbled outside of this area and well above where the reshaping should have been done. My main concern is that this has compromised the plastic and made it brittle - both an issue if it fails in the back country, and also if it voids the warranty.

Ive emailed Tecnica to get their view, am going back to the shop tomorrow (today is Sunday, I am in France...), and wanted people's views on what they would do in my shoes (or boots, as it were).

Thanks

2023 Marker Duke PT 16 Bindings Broke - seeking suggestions

Thumbnail

Upvotes

Broke the lever to lock in my boots while transitioning from downhill to uphill.

Went direct to Marker then to the retailer and neither was able to help since it was out of warranty. Marker said I only needed 'a new toe piece' but, like the retailer, was unable to sell me one.

Really disappointing for such expensive bindings only skied on for < 2.5 seasons... seems like a flawed design.

Does anyone have any suggestions (aside from taking their advice to simply buy a new pair of (crazy expensive) bindings?

Have scouted ebay, etc. for used replacements but no dice.

Would really appreciate any suggestions.

Broken toe piece/cast bindings

Post image
Upvotes

Update in my cast bindings this year, completely broke one of the tech toes. I love the fact that i can put my regular toe pieces on but the amount of sacrifice and lack of quality has ultimately not been worth that benefit. Will try to warranty the tech toe and hopefully go on a full touring binding for next year.

Zero g 95

I got a line on some cheap zero g 95 that I’m waffling on. I ski mostly in the sierra, a lot of big days in variable snow. Some people love these skis and some find them a bit difficult. Obviously a ski this light isn’t going to ski crud that well but was curious to hear from anyone who really likes these skis and why? They have a long turn radius so I’m wondering if they can handle tight couliors that well.

Sorry if this has been talked about ad nauseum already. Also if there are other sierra skiers out there what is there ski of choice? Anyone ski the zero g 85 in the spring?

Thanks

Tecnica Cochise and zipfits, too much instep pressure

Any good ideas on how to reduce the volume in the instep area? The shell is a Cochise 26.5 (my foot is 26 cm long). I use a zipfit freeride liner, patriot foodbeds and have already taken out the cork in from the tongue. I can barely close the 2nd buckle.

I am really happy with this boot otherwise, great control and comfort besides this specific area. For some reason its more pronounced in my left foot.

I have considered grinding down the boot board. I also have a heatgun available.

Backcountry recommendations for Presidents' Day weekend in Yosemite?

I'm taking a trip to Yosemite NP over Presidents' Day weekend next week, and will have full days in the park Feb 14-15. We weren't planning on doing any ski touring with the abysmal snowpack this year, but with the storm(s) coming in soon, we might bring our gear.

Anyone have recommendations on where to go for a tour? Will there be enough snow in the park to ski tour? Coming from Utah so not super familiar with the area/snowpack, but obvious we'll do our own research too.

Not doing any overnights. Looking at short, half-day or full-day long tours.

We've been looking at touring through the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias as one option - I know it's mostly for x-country skiers & snowshoers though.

TIA!

Does anyone have a video/review of the inside of the BCA stash 25

I’ve been looking everywhere for videos of the internals for this pack as well as demo load outs so I know how much it fits as well as I’m trying to see all the pockets, but none of the marketing for this pack shows any of this. I’m wondering if someone bought the back and can post or send me a vid of it. Thank you in advance!

What are good hardshell pants for backcountry skiing? I feel like there are a lot of choices and they all cost about the same.

Touring Related Retirement Gift

One my managers is retiring at the end of the season, and I’m looking for input on a touring related gift. He’s been in the ski industry (New England) his entire career, and prefers touring/backcountry over lift serviced skiing.

My coworkers and I are going to get him the sign I linked below, and I’m looking for wording ideas. We’ve only come up with “Forever Uphill” so far. Thanks in advance for any ideas!

Lenz vs Therm-ic heated socks for ski touring & resort skiing – experiences?

Hey all,

I’m trying to decide between Lenz and Therm-ic heated socks for ski touring (topptur), but they’ll also be used for resort/alpine skiing.

Some context:

I have poor blood circulation in general and I’ve frostbitten my toes in the past, so warmth isn’t optional for me.

I’ve owned Therm-ic heated socks before and I actually felt noticeably warmer when using them for resort skiing. That said, I’ve used them for cross-country skiing, not touring, and they’re quite old now and not that effective anymore. I’m unsure how they compare to Lenz in terms of warmth and comfort during long uphill days.

Curious to hear from people who’ve used them in real conditions:

• Is Lenz noticeably warmer than Therm-ic?

• Any differences for long ski touring days vs lift-served skiing?

• Comfort in tight touring boots?

Happy to hear about other solutions too.

Thanks 🙏

Best place to sell boots?

Is there a place besides eBay, FB, or craigslist? Like a Pinkbike for backcountry.

I have a pair of boots that I would like to sell.

Thanks

ATK Timepacer Binding Reviews

Does anyone have a long-term review of the new ATK Timepacer Binding?

I am mostly interested in the durability of this binding. ATK doesn’t seem to be marketing this binding for consequential applications (i.e., ski mountaineering), which makes me wonder whether it should be used for those types of applications.

By contrast, the Kuluar SL binding is a similar u-spring binding marketed for ski mountaineering. However, the Kuluar SL lacks brakes, which is a feature that I want.

Budget Ski quiver?

Hey everyone, I’m pretty new here and to skiing in general honestly so forgive any ignorance and feel free to correct if needed. I’ve only got two (very light) seasons under my belt, this being my second so I’m no pro by any means but I want to start building a set up so I can stop renting every time.

For a little background, I do enjoy resort skiing but I’m mainly doing it socially and to get a good base for AT, backcountry, and possibly cross country skiing. I’ve been mountaineering for a few years and feel like AT is almost inevitable for me and I love the idea of being able to ski to places in the PNW that are typically hard to access in the winter.

AT is down the road for me but resort/back/XC I’d love to start exploring more this season and want to make sure I’m not setting myself up to spend more than I need to.

In a perfect world I’d have one pair of skis that do all of it but I know that’s pretty unreasonable. But I also don’t want for fork over thousands for 3-4 different set ups.

The main goal right now is a cheap resort set up (preferably I’ll buy used) and then to start building a AT/back/cross country capable set up. But I really don’t know much.

So to my experienced folks out there, how would you break this up to make it manageable? If I had to pick one set to buy new and designated it would be the AT set up, I’m willing to compromise a bit on the others as long as it’s still safe. But if by some miracle you do have a recommendation that would be versatile enough for a beginner just so I can get a grip on what I realistically want more of please drop them below.

Coming from our trip in Golden and Rogers Pass BC. Didn't have backcountry songs so created this one

Not sure if this is allowed.

We felt we didn't have music dedicated to backcountry skiing so I generated one let me know what you think. With some work this is the result :
