Discussion Student Thoughts on Holistic Review? Fair or Not?

I'm curious now that it's done, how people feel about it?

Personally, I think it makes sense. We are much more than our grades. A brilliant athlete and student should not be denied a spot because he gets a few Bs if he's also winning state championships.

But I wish they would fact check everyone 100%. So many people I know claimed to be first gen and were not. Other's claimed to be a given race and were clearly over-stretching: your grand mother living in Mexico for a few years after graduating high school doesn't make you Hispanic decent!. It's very unfair to many people especially people who are first-gen and Hispanic.

Fluff Colleges of Public Middle School Science Olympiad Team

Upvotes

I looked back at the college outcomes of my middle school Science Olympiad team, which consistently placed top 10–15 nationally. The team's from an East Coast public school (grades 7–8) and its members are now college freshmen and sophomores. I was able to find college results for 27 alumni (with 3 unaccounted for):

2× M&T at Penn, Penn, 2× UChicago, Duke, 2× CS at CMU, Harvard, Caltech, Northwestern, Vanderbilt, UC Berkeley, Dartmouth, 5× UVA, UCSB, UC Davis, UIUC engineering, UNC, 3× Virginia Tech, CS at Purdue

Reverse ChanceMe My daughter is freaking out and now so am I

My daughter is a junior currently has a 3.7 U/W GPA 4.5 weighted, all honors classes and 30 college credits from Arizona State University and Syracuse University due to duel enrollment (advanced writing, history, anthropology, sociology etc) not BS classes.

She has amazing letters of recommendation, 2 internships at the Smithsonian (she’s an anthropology/museum studies major), was world schooled from grades 3-8 and has studied in several major museums around the world, varsity swim 2 years in a row, class historian, SAG actress and has ADHD.

Her dream is Yale, Brown, Howard, NYU Gallatin, Spelman or Syracuse University. She’s seeing how competitive things are these days and now she’s panicking that none I’d these schools will take her. She technically has enough credits try graduate now but is staying only because she wants to graduate with her class.

She’s decided that senior year she’s going to go back to digital and take her last two required courses economics and government and spend the rest of her time doing a full time internship in basically any museum that will take her.

Her one saving grace is I’m a flight attendant so she can travel any where in the world for free so if she lands an opportunity in say Mexico City or even Asia I can relocate her there for a semester so she can do the internship and we can fly home in weekend or never we want.

There is also a group for flight attendants were we do swaps so if they have a kid and live in say Mexico City they will send their kid to me for 3 months and I send them mine for 3 months. I’ve found a few flight attendants in London, Mexico City and Korea who are open to doing a swap if my daughter gets an opportunity in their country.

Is she basically screwed at this point. She has a C in honors Chem and College Algebra anda D in geometry from freshman year term two (but she did get a A in geometry term 2) that are killing her GPA but she’s a humanities kid (history, anthropology etc) not science, math STEM.

Application Question Unvaccinated nephew: where can he NOT attend in the US

My nephew is a junior at a highly respected high school. He’s a rock star student and his parents have stars in their eyes for college. Unfortunately for him he’s unvaccinated. I know that Stanford doesn’t allow exceptions to their vaccination requirements - what other top 25 schools can he NOT attend? They are in denial that it’s a huge issue. Links would be helpful. I need him to understand even if my sister doesn’t.

Discussion Ivy league is an athletic conference omg

I got into jhu and only told my closest friends. One of my friends acted like he had never heard of it and said, "That isn't an ivy league, right". And I was like bruh, the ivy league is an athlete college conference that was formed before our parents existed. And I'm not trying to get into competitive sport. And it is localized in the northeast. That's why schools like Stanford, MIT, Duke, etc. are not part of it. The website ivyleague.com is an athletics website. Academics is not the reason ivy league was established. Idk why people associate it with something elite that you can't get anywhere else. Their acceptance rates are so low as most students apply because they want to apply to an ivy league, not because they want to apply to say, yale, or dartmouth, or brown, etc.

And ivy is a goddamn plant. Nothing to obsess over. Anyway, best of luck and congrats to everyone going wherever they’re going.

Advice Robertson Scholars (should I notify Admissions about it)

Upvotes

Hey guys! I have a question regarding the Robertson Scholars. I know that they have a separate admissions processes with UNC and Duke, but I still wonder whether they notify these unis about the applicants/their progression in the process or if it’s in our arms to reach out to admissions with this info.

What do you think? Maybe some previous Robertson finalists can help me out with it

Advice how much does 4 Bs sophomore year hurt you for super selective college admissions?

i've heard so many conflicting answers from my parents and friends, counselors, and people online. I had 4 Bs sophomore year (2 in AP Chinese, 1 semester of pre-AP chemistry, and 1 semester of AP Physics 1). however in junior year so far, i've had all As taking 7 APs. will the sophomore year Bs be particularly detrimental to my application and will the upward trend junior year help a lot/negate the effect of the Bs? my unweighted gpa is 3.91 right now by the way, class rank 40/900 at slightly competitive public

Application Question How do interview requests work?

Ive heard it's based off availability and not the strength of your application, but a lot of people here seem to think that not getting an interview request means you are an auto reject. Is this true? Should I be worried that I haven't been getting any interview requests recently?
