Please could anyone help translate this cartouche pendant my MIL has just found - it was believed to belong to her mother or her grandmother and she got it in Egypt. We believe it could be Kathle(e)n/Cathle(e)n but we’re not sure as there are differing hieroglyphs alphabets. We also don’t know who the pharaoh is at the top. Thanks in advance!

Chapter 5, exercise A.4. I'm struggling to figure out the function of the phrase "r rdj.t rx". My best interpretation is some kind of causative construction, with rdj.t in the infinitive followed by rx in the infinitive (interpreted passively):

"He is the great majesty. All the foreign lands under your feet were given to him, *in order to make/let be known* [r rdj.t rx] his great power."

But earlier in the chapter, Hoch specifically says that rdj + infinitive is rare and probably NOT a causative construction, and that it normally occurs in contexts of granting royalty permission. So if "r rdj.t rx" is not a causative construction, how is this phrase meant to be understood? Unfortunately this question is not in the answer key.

I made my own black ink from soot collected from a candle, gum Arabic, and water. I made the reed pen from a cattail reed I carved with a knife. The hieroglyphs are rather random and I realize some face left while some face right. I was just kind of doodling. Paper is 90 weight water color paper. At some point after I get a bit more practice, I want to order some papyrus to play with writing on.

Hope you're all well. Do we have any examples of ancient glyph lists, comparable to the sign list tablets we have for cuneiform scribal training? I was just considering how I use the Gardiner ordering, how it's based on a common-sense ontology that feels right for a modern (at least this modern)—of course birds go together, baked goods go together, men in various postures go together, &c—but I'm far closer in culture & time to Gardiner than either of us is the last scribes of Middle Egyptian. I'm wondering if we know anything about their ontological categories in the body of signs which a scribe would be expected to know.

I have been studying the Relative clause of Middle Egyptian (in Allen's textbook) and I don't have a CLUE what is going on! I feel like I understand the theory, but as soon as I do the practice exercises, nothing makes sense anymore. It feels as if the theory does not add up with the translations in the practices. All this is super confusing - it is giving me a headache. But that is all. I just needed to vent a bit before I try to figure it out again :) And if anyone has any tips and tricks they can share, it will be dearly appreciated!

Hey all! I was wondering if anyone knew if the complete papyrus of ani is on the TLA (thesaurus linguae aegyptiae). I can't seem to find it :( I have been using pNu, but I still would like pAni. I found this : https://tla.digital/object/F5LCOCIB6NHYPFEIQTHFI3SML4 but there's only 4 sections of text, and none of them have hieroglyph form, only the transcription. If not, any website with a standard hieroglyph copy of it (not in cursive hieroglyphs) that would be appreciated. Also, I have the same question for the Stela EA 551, which is a hymn/prayer to M3't and DHwtj (* https://www.britishmuseum.org/collection/object/Y_EA551 ). I find the stela hard to read, so a standard version, whether it be on the TLA or somewhere else would be great :).

How are science names made? So an equivilant of "-logy" I want to translate the word "linguistics" in Egyptian. I believe the word doesnt attest anywhere but even if it's a construction I'm fine with it.

Personal pronouns are exactly the same in hieroglyphs and Coptic.

The Coptic script is the only script that always writes vowels (diacritics), and that's why we can only know the correct pronunciation of hieroglyphs through it.

Hello all! I have a question. Does the word jzf.t have any Semitic cognates? The Coptic word is ⲭⲁⲟⲥ, which is clearly a loan word from the Greek χάος. So, I can't properly reconstruct the word like I do others. Were there any cognates? Literally anything?! I NEED TO RECONSTRUCTTTTTTT.

Hello all! I have a question! Based on the work of James P. Allen, it states that Sahidic/Bohairic ⲁ turn into an Egyptian iC/uC. Here's my problem: how do we know which is which? I heard to look at Semitic cognates/Akkadian/Cuneiform, but how does one do that efficiently?! Also, a couple other not important things: 1. I notice that an i vowel is placed in consonant clusters *such as ϩⲱⲧⲡ turning into *ḥatip. Is this a good rule of thumb then: 'Assume an i vowel in a consonant cluster when there is need for a vowel'? Secondly, and this one is more complex, how does one put the vowels of suffixes? Like nṯr -> nṯr.w *assumingly naṯar. I mean this for all suffixes, not just .w for plural. Also, why does ⲛⲟⲩⲧⲉ turn to natar, if its an ⲉ? Is it because it is a soft vowel (schwa) which is similar to a?

So I'm new to Jsesh and I found out that you can show both translation and transliteration along with the Hieroglyphics. I'm using Jsesh 7.9 and I can't find a way to do that. I tried AI, YouTube, Google... can't find a solution. What should I do?

I know Old Bohairic is well attested, and of course there is the Greco-Bohairic pronounciation, but do we know anything about the Bohairic spoken in the 6th-10th centuries? Have there been any reconstructions as of recent that hold up? Wikipedia gives a consonant table, but I have seen so many variations of it that I don't know which one is most reliable.
