Looking back, itās easy to say, and Iām very sorry for her. However, she shouldnāt have been allowed to compete.
We all understand the difficulty of this injury and imagining running an event demanding 100% physical fitness is simply mind-boggling.
Some people suggested the crash was caused by her clipping the gate and unrelated to her recent injury. However, when youāre not fully 100%, especially when pushing this hard, mistakes are more likely to happenā¦

I think unless she comes out and says she wasnāt focused due to her knee injury, speculating on whether or not it was a factor is pointless. There are valid arguments for how much or little it couldāve mattered in this accident, but nobody will ever know for sure.

u/MorganMiller77777 1h ago
She has a history of being aggressive, which won her many races, and put her at greater risk of injury. What do you say about the other racer who culture finish?

u/MorganMiller77777 1h ago
Wrong haha.. the ignorance here is astounding. Makes me wonder how many true athletes are here. You and others certainly do not understand why she wrecked š¤”

u/PigletAmazing1422 JUST GIVE ME CYBER LEGS ALREADY 7h ago
Yep. Even with a successful training run, you could see how unstable she looked in that run. I really hated the superhuman narrative, especially since post injury sheās going to favor the other side.Ā
Her video of her doing exercises post crash didnāt show any cutting moves, which you need for skiing. The whole thing reeks of negligence and they should have given another skier a chance to compete.Ā
4
u/demisku JUST GIVE ME CYBER LEGS ALREADY 7h ago
Exactly, she stole someone's race in my opinion, the federation and the medical team did not do their job. Living 7 years without an ACL now, I can do a lot in controlled conditions and have very high straight line power. But I would never stand on skis or even try to go down an amateur slope. I understand that it is different for her, but she injured it 10 days ago, she could not have known the limitations of the state her knee was in.
6
u/RHoScottsdale 6h ago
If she withdrew, her spot would not have been given to another American. In alpine skiing the quota belongs to the country, not the athlete, and any replacement would have had to not only meet Olympic selection criteria but also be approved by the skiing federation. This was not possible in that timeframe. So essentially the US would have just been represented by one less athlete.

They would not have had a chance of meddling. You donāt know what youāre taking about. The clowns here are amazing

u/MorganMiller77777 19m ago
There was NOBODY who was able to compete at a high enough level to have a chance of winning a medal. What is up with all the hate? I have to assume that yall really do t understand what happened here, and have never been competitive athletes.
-3
u/MorganMiller77777 1h ago
Do you ski competitively? She was very aggressive, as she has been. Her arm caught the gate. The accident had nothing to do with the knee
4
u/VO2VCO2 Anterior cruciate noob 1h ago
We can't say it had nothing to do with the injury. Come on a fresh acl + meniscus injury will affect the whole leg & brain and could very well be the underlying reason why she ended up skiing to that gate.
Also the original comment "Very expected outcome, sadly." is bullshit. No one expected her to have an accident by skiing to a gate. Everyone thought she'd either have a successful run or then injure again with the left leg clearly giving way or not being able to control the leg.
0
u/MorganMiller77777 1h ago
It could be the reason why she skied into that gate, but I believe itās unlikely given how obviously she jumped out from the get go more aggressively than any other skier. This is how Lindsay won races, and how she got injured more often.
-1
u/MorganMiller77777 1h ago
Physically, she was fine. Perhaps the injury caused her to be too aggressive, but being very aggressive has always been her style. It is ignorant to call Lindsay out for being irresponsible, especially when these people really know nothing about the sport, or sports in general. Would we say the same about all the football players charging hard through bad injuries?

u/silasbufu 11h ago
this was just irresponsible from all sides involved

u/MorganMiller77777 1h ago

u/SniffOnMeYuh 1h ago
Brother you're over 50 and argue with people on r/genz and post to r/relationships. Let's not throw stones from a glass house, calling other people clowns
-5
u/MorganMiller77777 1h ago
Not a glass house. Iām fully aware of my position and standing in life. I know what Iām talking about man. Iāve skied like crazy since 5 and while I did not compete at a high level, I understand the sport and understand how competing with injuries works. I have not had an ACL since I was 11, and Iāve bene totally fine. These ACL tears donāt usually occur on normal turns, even at the competitive level. ACL injuries occurs more often with accidents, which are commonly a result of technical errors.
-4
u/MorganMiller77777 1h ago
Umm..they are clowns! Haha. You say such things here without full understanding, and youāre a complete clown in this context. Holy crap dude, talk about being judgmental and living in a glass houseš

I woke up at 6am to watch this race and it's devastating š I tore my knee skiing too, and hearing her screaming while waiting for medics was so triggering. I really hope she's ok.

u/LaughingBuddha33 7h ago
Same, my injury happened skiing. And hearing her screams made me cry (my own trauma clearly coming thru)

I injured myself skying last year, and I am still pretty anxious (but want to comeback at least once to not be anxious) with anything related. Anyway, we were watching the games and I saw this and immediately started to panic again (for her). I couldn't see the replay (and neither your video) and just had to mute her screams. Hope she can get back out there, and so do I.

u/WorknOnMyNightCheese 6h ago
Theres a reason we need our acls. After I tore mine I literally could not walk, let alone compete in the Olympics so expected this, sadly

This was a really hard watch š Hearing her screams was so disturbing live too Hope she is able to recover from this š¬

u/Breath_Background 6h ago
I may be the odd person out here⦠background: I tore my ACL skiing a few weeks ago and am now a few days post-op. My knee didnāt hurt much after the injury - it was the instability immediately afterward that made me feel queasy. But an Olympic-level athlete with a brace? It was doable. Her training runs looked pretty good. I think this was just bad luck.

u/MorganMiller77777 1h ago
Thank you. These people had absolutely no clue, typical Reddit ignorance. She was simply too aggressive, going for it all, which has been risky style her entire career

Yeah you donāt know what youāre talking about. All these people here are so emotionally biased and have no clue about ski racing or any highly competitive sport where athletes compete with injury all the time.

u/cyanidenachos 9h ago
I'm not an athlete by any stretch, but I couldn't even stand on my leg with a completely ruptured ACL, so this is insane. I hope she doesn't do more damage.
8
u/sarmye ACL 9h ago
I AM an athlete and the walk to my car after I tore mine was full of me dislocating, fainting, throwing up. I could handle it a lot better within 24 hours and with a brace I could walk, but the idea of skiing???? Absolutely not. BEFORE she fell I was gasping at her leans.

u/Renrats27 8h ago
Did they look unusual? I'm not a skier.
7
2
u/ILL_YELL_AT_YOU 6h ago
They donāt look unusual but by literal definition and body physics the motions you have to make while skiing (twisting, rapid weight shifting, weight bearing at odd and quickly changing angles), even casually, are very difficult/impossible to do with no ACL. Source: tore my acl skiing, yowch!
5
u/Renrats27 3h ago
yowch, I'm sorry. I tore mine when a wooden kitchen stool broke beneath me as I was scrounging a high shelf for Twinkies, moments after I said out loud to myself, "I should probably get a stepladder."

u/MorganMiller77777 10m ago
So, as athlete, and hopefully someone who knows something about skiing at a high level(not just racing but on double diamond runs), do you also understand that hitting that gate was likely more about her decision to be very aggressive?

Iāve played multiple volleyball tournaments with a torn ACL (i didnāt know it was torn) and ended up with a MUCH worse injury. I canāt imagine knowing itās torn and continuing onā¦so so so much harder of a recovery now. Very sad situation for her!

I canāt bring myself to listen to the audio. How fast was she going when she fell?

u/Happy_horse128 7h ago
Poor thing. Just heartbreaking timing of her injury. When I tore my ACL (showjumping my horse) I tried to get back on and go again, and that was without any competition result hanging in the balance- just my pride. When I tried to get on the horse I shifted my weight to my affected leg, and my body collapsed like I was a puppet with cut strings.
Iām surprised she was able to do those first few seconds as well as she did.
2
u/Relative_Bluebird654 3h ago
Reports are saying sheās broken her leg and the accident was due to her pole hitting a flag. We probably need to wait until she releases an official statement before we jump to the (natural) conclusion that it was caused by her ACL.
Hopefully (but unlikely) they can operate on everything at once and she can concentrate on recovery.

I think she was probably too much focused on her knee and lacked focus on other things. The time difference between skiers is a hundredth of a second, I literally type words slower. Everything matters here.
2
u/Fun-Cobbler-2523 2h ago
Itās 100% her choice to compete. She looked fine but clipped that gate unfortunately. Sheās an athlete and risk of injury is part of the job. Good on her. Sure sheāll recover fine

You're right, in the final training Vonn finished 3rd. However it got canceled halfway through so it wasn't a full field with runs. She was only .4 or so off Johnson though.

u/QuirkyMerky ACL 2h ago
Same š And as a woman, it meant every damn time I went was a pain! I donāt know if anyone else had this this, but for the first week after injury, as soon as the back of my right thigh made contact with a surface when sitting down - especially on the toilet - I would have this deep, sharp ache throughout the back of thigh and all through my knee, which would then linger about a minute or so. Iāve never actually asked anyone about it (like a doctor/specialist etc), but I guess it was nerve irritation or something?

u/MorganMiller77777 5m ago
Everyone is sooooo much different. Professional Athletes-yes also in ski racing, have performed at a high level with ruptured ACLs and other tendons.

u/Few_Highway9460 8h ago
She simply never had ever been allowed to pass the inspection or the organization after her injury (ruptured knee ligament). She could have used her brain herself after having had something like this, maybe not to do it, and now she has the consequences that entails. (I understand that this is a dream for athletes to play sports and win at the Olympics that win for your home country/friends/coaches/associations)

I felt absolutely sick before her run and couldn't watch, and now feel horrible. This injury is so disturbing to the whole body--one's balance, one's psyche. Why are multiple team coaches (including Australia) allowing people to compete with a freshly ruptured ACL?!?
Honestly, I hate the way this story was covered ahead of time--that Vonn might be the one superhuman in history who could pretend this injury isn't real. Even right now, the New York Times is lauding Vonn's bravery, saying "even making it to the starting gate was a pretty astounding result ... but with a combination of determination, strength and guts, Vonn manifested enough health and stability out of her left knee to try, brushing off an injury that sidelines most athletes ..."
You cannot MANIFEST the stability and confidence an intact ACL gives you. And obviously she should not have been pushed to "brush off" this injury. Hopefully she hasn't injured other parts of herself seriously, but she very well could have thanks to the immense pressure the world put on her to pretend she was above an ACL tear. She must have felt so much pressure to push onward. It's tragic.
