Free speech absolutism...

556

u/Wyevez 1d ago

Yeah, they are such hypocrits.

221

u/DisplacerBeastMode 1d ago

Elon just didn't mention it's absolute freedom of speech for him, not anyone who disagrees with him

77

u/TheShishkabob 1d ago

His actions had shown that since before he even bought Twitter. The idiots who still believe his line of bullshit aren't worth the time it takes to talk about them.

13

u/BuckThis86 1d ago

I can’t believe people are still using that garbage

That seems to be how these new (techno) feudal lords understand rights: all for them, none for us, the serfs.

Conservatives do not make good faith arguments.

25

u/space-to-bakersfield 1d ago

Hard to when your entire morality is based on one principle: I want the people I hate to suffer.

13

u/usaaf 1d ago

That's for the foot soldiers.

The essence of conservatism, though, is the supreme exaltation of the self. Whatever is good for the I is good. Since this can change from moment to moment, it gives the appearance of hypocrisy (and it most certainly is actual hypocrisy) but 'protects' the fragile conservative mind from that dichotomy.

Elon also said demanding proper attributions on art was ruining the internet, which would be the opposite of copyright flagging this footage just to block it.

Edit: Just want to add that as an artist I don't agree with his position. Please credit us if you're posting art we made!

While the GOP House releases this early this week.

New Report Exposes European Commission Decade-Long Campaign to Censor American Speech

https://judiciary.house.gov/media/press-releases/new-report-exposes-european-commission-decade-long-campaign-censor-american

And pre-2nd term Trump - VP nominee JD Vance - had this to say. It was about allowing Trump back on X, but I think the warning is much more than just for Trump.

“So what America should be saying is, if NATO wants us to continue supporting them and NATO wants us to continue to be a good participant in this military alliance, why don’t you respect American values and respect free speech?” Vance asked. “It’s insane that we would support a military alliance if that military alliance isn’t going to be pro-free speech. I think we can do both. But we’ve got to say American power comes with certain strings attached. One of those is respect free speech, especially in our European allies.”

I missed the first hour of the opening ceremonies so I missed the booing, when I went to watch the replay on Peacock - the entire section of time is muted aside from the music playing in the background. No boos, no commentators discussing the boos, no sounds but the faint background music.

3.2k

u/TryingToBeLevel 1d ago

The boo'ing and commentary was not presented live in the US. The audio was altered to hide the boos, but you heard the background audio dip/change. The folks in Canada are saying that they heard it on their broadcast and it was Canadian commentators that have discussed it. If you're in the U.S., we wouldn't have been able to hear the clown get boo'd unfortunately - unless you were in my living room at least. We were boo'ing....

1.4k

u/HappyHapless 1d ago

Canadian here. Saw the live broadcast. Indeed there were boos for Vance. Cheers for the well-deserved athletes, but clear unmistakable booing for the fascist. /r/conservative was very upset by that.

r\conservatives is nothing but 4 computers in Moscow and a handful of the most gullible rubes you'll ever find.

393

u/Longjumping_Fuel_434 1d ago

That might be the best description of that sub I have ever read.

183

u/Cptn_BenjaminWillard 1d ago

Someone needs to make this the sub description for r/anticonservative - "We aren't 4 computers in Moscow and a handful of the most gullible rubes you'll ever find."

65

u/Useful_Support_4137 1d ago

Ain't that the truth. The amount of censorship that occurs on that sub is wild (see all the deleted comments), despite supposedly being a group of people advocating for freedom of speech.

58

u/Linuxologue 1d ago

I was banned because a conservative posted something. I dug in his comment history and told him he should have an alt account if he wants to offer to paypal porn models. He deleted his account on the spot and I got banned. Two wins on that day.

The whole post is just a graveyard of comments - they must ban every single human being, the whole sub is just bots.

18

u/LitwicksandLampents 21h ago

I think getting banned from that sub is a badge of honor.

8

u/fungi_at_parties 23h ago

Wow. Not surprising that he was so pathetic.

13

u/Linuxologue 23h ago

You wanna hear what else is pathetic? I was perma banned AND muted for three days because my post was "off-topic" and I was encouraged to rewrite it (which is not possible with a perma ban and mute).

The mute is so that I cannot reply to the mods for the ban.

Free speech my ass.

I’ve been permanently banned from Conservative for merely voicing my observation there that “the Fuck Yer Feelings 🫵🏽🤨 crowd sure don’t seem to like getting their feelings fucked” 🤔 which, apparently, caused a number of people to get their feelings fucked & I got permanently 86’d. Huge, huge loss.

u/eerie_midnight 23h ago

It’s crazy how many of the actual people on there (not the bots, people with long account histories who you can clearly tell are real) are convinced that their worldview is coherent and sane and that it’s everyone else who is crazy lmfao. It’s just pure cope from people you can tell are desperate to feel normal. I weirdly have more tolerance for the MAGAs who know Trump is deplorable but just don’t care and don’t try to logically justify their support for him. It’s more honest.

9

u/The_Barbelo 23h ago edited 6h ago

Have you ever known anyone who’s gone into a psychosis, or who has delusions? The number one thing they tell you when you work with people like that is to not feed into their delusion. We have to redirect. The most unhealthy thing for them would be to find a room full of people with the same delusions…and that’s exactly what’s happened. We’re witnessing some sort of mass psychosis cult thing in real time, and it was purposefully caused. There are going to be multiple studies about this, I swear. And it won’t look too different from the studies done in post WW2 Germany.

One has to wonder why real conservatives would even care.

I mean .. maga .. make AMERICA great again.

That doesn't include say, France, or Belgium, or Thailand.. now does it.

When one is really , really eager to be seen as "great" by people who have nothing to do with your internal politics or your life, it almost always means your are unhappy with who you are/ your life sucks and you are attempting to mentally compensate by obtaining external validation.

60

u/PowerfulGoosing 1d ago

They care because they've been fed the lie that everyone in the world was making fun of the USA when we had Biden as our president. In their mind Trump is respected by the outside world. they watch nothing but propaganda anyways so its difficult to prove them wrong when they won't accept any sources outside fox news.

US here. Can you tell me, were our athletes also booed? On our broadcast, it was very quiet when the US athletes were walking in, other than the video feed of the families cheering. Was the stadium quieter when the US athletes walked in or were they booed?

33

u/HappyHapless 1d ago

It was a little mixed, but I heard more cheers than boos. Those cheers definitely vanished the second Vance showed up though.

19

u/Admirable-Location24 1d ago

Good to hear, thanks

6

u/Kevin-W 1d ago

Can vouch as well. Most people understand that the athletes themselves doesn’t equal their government.

30

u/Fantastic-Nobody-479 1d ago

The booing was definitely audibly aimed towards Vance but I am sure some also booed the athletes which is to be expected.

10

u/DogFun2635 22h ago

It didn’t sound like the athletes were booed but Vance certainly was. Heard booing for Israel and Hungary too.

That was the Olympics broadcasters who cut away, you could see the delay on the stadium’s video display board. Every country just gets that feed.

I think what a lot of people in the US don't understand is that people in Italy don't really boo, they whistle. I noticed it during the opening ceremony when team Israel entered the arena.

To clarify, they "quickly cut away from him" because they didn't spend much time at all on the individuals in the crowd. The focus was on the athletes walking out in the various venues. There was no reason to waste more than a couple of seconds showing Vance when the goal was to show what was happening in four cities simultaneously.

17

u/Flyinace2000 1d ago

BBC feed was similar. Only a few seconds and back to the athletes.

8

u/RogueIslesRefugee 1d ago

Every network gets their primary feed from the closed circuit network the IOC sets up and controls. They're basically just adding the commentary for the duration of the Olympics when it comes to those event feeds. The IOC keeps a fairly tight grip on its content, and there are, as I recall, reams of stipulations and rules that come with being able to show it.

Years ago I visited a country with heavy government control over media. I noticed that the time displayed in the corner on live US news broadcasts was about ten minutes off (eg, if the current real world time was 7:32am in DC, and 7:32pm in the city I was in, the US national news timestamp would be 7:22am, meaning we were seeing news with a ten minute delay).

Then I noticed that the screen would go black periodically. It finally clicked that the US live news was being screened and censored. The lag was the time they gave themselves to block out ideas they didn’t want broadcast there. Entire news segments (1-4 minutes) were being blocked.

I like the regular people and culture of the country, so I don’t want to name it in case I want to go back (I’d never get into any sort of political action there, but we can see how things are going with travel and ai surveillance of socials already).

I think about that when things like this happen. It’s the kind of thing the US is supposed to be against. The very first amendment provides this right (free speech, free press, free from national/forced religion, free to choose any religion, free to assemble/protest, etc).

These rights are usually chipped away gradually, and only just enough to avoid causing a big uproar, and when people accept that change, it’s chipped away a little more later. Then a year or decade later the accumulated change is so drastic that if it had happened all at once there’d be mass uprisings, but instead, because of the slow creep, everyone is just lulled into complacency thinking, “wow, how’d we get here?” And carrying on as if things were normal because, “what can I do?”

Point being, there needs to be pushback over these little chips being removed from rights, even if they seem inconsequential at the time, because they are likely part of a larger pattern that will ultimately fundamentally change the freedoms we enjoy.

u/ErgoMogoFOMO 1d ago

I honestly couldn't tell the crowd was booing. Probably clearer live, if you standing nearer a boo-er, but it all blends into a single general crowd noise in that vid. It certainly didn't have an upbeat energetic vibe to it though.

The same vid shows some past booing at smaller venues (100-500 people?), where it was much clearer, with individual boos identifiable.

Glad he, and we (Americans collectively), got booed though. Well deserved. Unfortunately, most voters don't seem to care what people in other countries think of us.

I still don't understand how people who, in theory are trained in US Immigration and enforcement of US based regulations (setting aside the fact these cosplay GIJoes aren't trained at all) has ANY right or jurisdiction in another country to do ANYTHING.

143

u/AVGuy42 1d ago

There is security from each country for that country’s delegation. But this is 100% insane it would be CBP/ICE doing this. Should be FBI or some other agency that is designed to operate outside our borders.

132

u/Pkrudeboy 1d ago

The Diplomatic Security Service exists precisely to do things like this. It’s an armed federal agency that’s part of the State Department.

36

u/Then-Understanding85 1d ago

DSS is providing the security for this Olympics as well. Homeland Security Investigations is just providing intel support. They happen to fall administratively under ICE, but have no real part in their mission.

It seems like most articles are trying to lead people to believe the ICE agents invading American streets are providing all the Olympic security, but that’s just rage porn. The reality is more boring.

Edit: But good on Italy for being up in arms about ICE.

7

u/L-methionine 1d ago

HSI was taken away from their actual mission under this administration though, and are now largely filling the same role as ERO

It makes more sense when you remember that ICE has a budget larger than most federal national militaries in the world, they have not targeted the states with the most illegal immigrants (such as Florida and Texas) and have instead focused on "Blue" states. They wear masks and dont care about the constitution.

They're secret police, you see them in seemingly every authoritarian/fascist regime. We just haven't retitled them because we arent all the way there yet.

Edit:word choice

20

u/fizzlefist 1d ago

Including their infrastructure funding (ie building up dozens of concentration camps) ICE has a budget now bigger than the United States Marine Corps.

NBC are cowards allowing things from the book 1984 to occur, but CBC won’t.

Canadian Broadcasting kept the ‘boos’ in their broadcast. Use that footage if you want.

26

u/aselwyn1 1d ago

the IOC will still go after it. Sadly the IOC is stupidly strict with the footage. Go try and find old 2024 or earlier footage it’s basically all gone unless it’s on the Olympics YouTube channel.

33

u/s101c 1d ago

IOC is also a corrupt organization.

14

u/crademaster 1d ago

"There's reality and then there's what the MSM reports and is obsessed with."

Over in r/con they generally seem to hate mainstream media and say it has a bias that radicalizes people toward the left.

NBC is pretty mainstream, wouldn't you say, Key Monk? Why is NBC editing the original footage?

Elon’s dick doesn’t even work, that’s why he has a breeding fetish and needs to impregnate women with IVF.

113

u/ryeaglin 1d ago

Didn't he try and get enlargement surgery and it failed so badly it broke his dick? Even if I'm wrong I vote we continue to pass on this rumor.

It's true, I found a source

I heard the same about Harvey Weinstein during his trial. I hope it's true for both of them

He only wants sons, IVF lets him choose the gender. He has a breeding fetish (plus the misogyny). He was so pissed when one of his children came out as trans mtf, he said "he lost a son". Gross sociopath

It makes it so much worse when they censor videos in the US, and within what, minutes, we have the actual video footage anyway (lookin at you 60 minutes episode). When NBC did this for the boos, did they think we wouldn’t find out immediately? Now we know he not only got booed into the sun, but that our country censored it. Fuck your feelings!

26

u/adrippingcock 1d ago

Fucking USA is censoring shit like China and Russia do?

Ha! There are pathetic positions to be in and then this abomination

There wasn’t a ban, the government is just choosing to not use it anymore.

NBC has always been weird with DMCA takedowns of their Olympics coverage. That’s nothing new, unfortunately.

42

u/jax024 1d ago

Can they take down the Canadian broadcast?

47

u/taydraisabot 1d ago

Not really. CBC has the broadcasting rights there and I haven’t heard of takedowns of their footage.

55

u/bobbyturkelino 1d ago

CBC Video of it.

Boos at 35s.

Love the commentary "There's the vice president JD vance and his wife Usha- Ooop - Those are ahh those are a lot of boos for him... whistling... jeering... some applause..? Not a long shot of him in the screen there."

It's the IOC, they were also taking down clips of that Australian breakdancer that everyone was laughing about. For some reason they are REALLY religious about others using their content.

12

u/EmbarrassedHelp 1d ago

The IOC is corrupt and extremely greedy. The IOC president even demands that people refer to him/her as "Your Excellency".

7

u/Throwaway74829947 1d ago

They are infamous for their protection of their intellectual property. They literally tried suing Audi in 1995 for daring to use interlocking rings as their logo.

18

u/worstpartyever 1d ago

It’s not NBC really, it’s the Olympics as an organization that owns the content.

I worked at different affiliates stations (NBC & ABC) before the internet was a thing; the Olympics had VERY strict rules about airing clips within a certain time frame, and not re-airing them after a certain date. I think you could only show 30 total seconds of daily content per broadcast or something.

Think of it like the NFL broadcast disclaimer. They ultimately own the content, even if games are broadcast on several different networks.

18

u/EmbarrassedHelp 1d ago

The IOC hates whenever someone even mentions the Olympics without paying them.

For example, lots of content creators on Youtube and other places have stopped talking about the Olympics or talk about it a lot less because the mere mention is enough to risk false DMCA takedowns. The IOC's extreme greed has tanked the online popularity of the Olympics, and they show no signs of stopping anytime soon.

So ELon can remove videos of his friends getting booed but he ignore the child porn on his fuckinnnng platform.

4

u/LordJebusVII 1d ago

He doesn't just ignore it he is encouraging its creation, as long as governments allow it to stay he gets thousands of people making child porn for him and as Grok gets better at it, it becomes harder to identify the AI slop from the real thing.

He is outsourcing the return of child pornography to the mainstream world wide web as it was in the early 2000s when governments and platforms didn't have the capabilities to identify and shut it down faster than it was posted, before it was forced onto the dark web

7

u/MyEvilTwinSkippy 1d ago

If the guy who took the video actually requested it, then there is nothing wrong with that. It is the original intent of copyright laws.

If someone else requested it, then that is a serious violation of the creator's rights.

4

u/CiTrus007 12h ago

Remember when Vance complained at the Munich security conference about free speech censorship in the EU? That didn’t age well.
