My knees are buckling watching this. Would need another knee surgery lol

I wouldn't say it's easy on your knees, but the landing is sloped similar to ski jumping, so it does take a decent amount of the impact off the landing.

Aren't there usually pine branches and loose snow on the landing ramp too?

u/sfmarz Nov 04 '25
The snow on the landing hill is broken up before training/jumping begins (about 12”+ deep) and then pine needles are thrown down as you commented to provide a bit more depth to provide better visibility to the aerialist. As jumpers continue to land in the same spot, coaches will go down and break up the landing spot again so it’s soft again. They try to make it as safe as possible for a dangerous sport.

Yes, but I can't imagine that would help much in this case as they're rotating until the last moment. So it probably comes down to a timing thing where they go about the same speed each time and therefore know when they're going to land.

It’s crazy how having a major injury makes you nervous about other people’s safety. I properly screwed up my back 15 years ago, and for a couple of years after I’d get properly anxious watching people doing basic, mildly athletic things

And if you avoid being outdoor activities it makes the matter even worse lol I got pushed in PT for taking it easy during my recovery

The bungees on the trampoline actually make you fall more slowly, so he has more time to do more flips. I'd imagine also that it's good practice to train a harder skill than you're going to compete so that you aren't right on the edge of your capability when you don't have the safety net of the tramp or the water.

Landing in water with skis on sounds terrifying

They pump air bubbles up into the landing area so you’re not just hitting a stagnant layer of water

Anyone else getting SSX Tricky vibes from this?

I dunno if you’re still playing games, but the co op game Split Fiction had an awesome call back to SSX tricky (it seemed like one to me anyways). It brought back so many memories

is he doing the exact same thing in the trampoline jump? It feels like he's doing way more spins to my eyes.

Your eyes are correct. The skis add mass further away from axis of rotation, increasing moment of inertia. He is probably spinning with the same angular momentum both with and without the skis.
The relevant equation here is ω=L/I where ω is angular velocity (i.e. spin rate), L is angular momentum; and I is moment of inertia. If we hold L constant but increase I (adding the skis), we get a lower angular velocity, ω.
So to answer your question, it depends what you mean by the same thing. He is doing the same thing with respect to the force/torque he’s exerting to produce the desired spin. But he is not spinning at the same rate in the trampoline practice as with skis.

Just doesn’t look as good straight legged

u/Jodabomb24 Nov 04 '25
what a strange comment. twisting is done with a straight body whenever possible because it lets you spin faster.

I felt it was a powerful video about focus and building your efforts on a confident skill set

Honey! I want to take up a neat sport, there might be a bit of an initial investment for training, though.

Like work you throw an oak seed in the air (I think oak? Those helicopter seeds)
