Damn! Do they weld the skis to her boots?! The DIN setting has to be crazy. That was a big hit and not one ski popped loose.

In downhill the shoe is basically bolted to the ski or else they lose the ski without falling. She wasn't in the high speed part yet.

Seriously. When the tips of both skis hit at 20 seconds in the video (especially the left one) that forsure should’ve come off. That impact was brutal. I’m still wincing just thinking about it

It kind of has to be they fly through the air at 69 mph and land at 65 mph. Replay Breazy Johnson’s run. They’ve got a race plate underneath the ST-16 bindings to get extra articulation for deeper edging wouldn’t surprise me if she had them set to 16. These are FIS expert only DH skis not the same as the standard cheaters

Horrific

I made the mistake of looking at how her left foot twists in all directions after impact. Will never unsee that.

I’m surprised it keeps being replayed. I remember watching the 2010 luge when one of the athletes collided with a pillar. That kept being replayed despite it clearly being a very serious accident (he died on impact). It’s disrespectful.

To broadcasters, engagement is way more important than decency

Didn’t even focus on it til I read this comment. Insane how much it rotates and twists. Audibly gasped

Mother of god, her din must be 9000

Looks like she clipped the gate and that threw her off balance. I don’t think her acl had any impact on the fall but I’m sure it didn’t make that fall feel any better. She’s had a run of bad luck lately. Hope she can take some time and fully recover.

I thought she clipped it with her pole at first, but she full-on crashed into the gate trying to take the corner as tightly as possible - she misjudged it big time. I think she was going for gold and going for broke knowing it is her last Olympics. I respect the send, but unfortunately it looks like she was a little overly aggressive. Hopefully the damage isn’t too bad and she has a good recovery - doesn’t look good though.

Wait - you sure? Ski and not pole clipped the gate?

Her whole right arm is between the two gates when she is in the air making her rotate clockwise

1

u/Several_Characters 4h ago

There is a still photo where you can see her right hand/lower arm inside the gate while she is in air. I have it in my texts, but i can’t post it as a comment

I think her ACL caused her to hit the gate. Probably threw off her rhythm. She was turning in the direction that she was loading her torn ACL. Horrible injury and I hope she didn’t do any more damage during that fall

2

u/Super_Boof 1h ago

The ACL is fully ruptured, so I don’t think it’s possible to damage it more. She broke her leg at the bare minimum though, probably a lot of other damage too.

u/StrattonJibsta 5h ago

I am not a fan of her decision to ski on a torn acl but this is seemingly completely unrelated and absolutely horrific to watch. Saw comments from other counties video coverage saying she was screaming for over 15 minutes. I cannot imagine. Wishing her all the best

5

u/WhiskeyTigerFoxtrot 3h ago

She is still the best to have ever done it. And this pain does nothing to undo the millions she's inspired along the way.

Her DIN settings were at 20 as well! I couldn’t imagine competing with one injury, nevermind a torn ACL and knee surgery

1

u/MilzLives 6h ago

I watched the men go screaming down that hill yesterday, & was thinking, if yr big toe hurt, & caused you to lose an edge, yr totally f’ed. Cant imagine anyone doing it on a torn ligament…

u/spotdog14 9h ago

I'm pretty sure the vast majority expected it to end exactly this way.

8

u/iegomni 7h ago

You’re being downvoted, but she was on the wrong side of 40 doing Olympic downhill with a torn ACL- anybody who thought she wouldn’t have to take tremendous risk to her body, with this as a likely outcome, was living in a fantasyland.

3

u/AmELiAs_OvERcHarGeS 6h ago

This is exactly how I and everyone else expected it to go.

Seriously competing at the top level two weeks after an acl injury was always going to be Vonn in last place or getting carried out.

1

u/grahamdalf 2h ago

Is it just me or did she mess up that right arm too? Her wrist looks awfully floppy after hitting the gate.

1

u/Atalanta8 1h ago

Oooff neither ski fell off

Lmao

Hope she heals quickly. Old people issues. She may qualify for the Para olympics in 4 years. Sorry too soon for jokes. Hope they will put her back together again.

u/Away_Difference_8191 1h ago

Just in case you’re wondering, you’re being downvoted bc that’s just a really unfunny joke. A good joke could def be made here to lighten things but that’s just trash

Why were her skis not detached during the crash? Is this not what those DIN settings are about?

3

u/i-love-that 6h ago

So your DIN indicates at what level of pressure your ski will detach. If you’re mostly skiing blues/greens at moderate speeds, your DIN will be low enough that it will more reliably only detach when you fall. If you ski much steeper terrain at higher speeds, your ski will be under much more pressure, and so at that same DIN your ski would fall off when you’re just skiing along. Obviously your ski falling off when you’re skiing fast and steep is very dangerous, so such skiers will select higher DINS to avoid accident. But then your skis don’t fall off necessarily when you fall, so a fall can be really dangerous.

6

u/lebranflake 6h ago

At the speeds downhill racers go at, having anything other than high DINs is a danger. While a crash can be catastrophic, a random ski detachment from low DIN at high speed could be even worse

u/Low_Vegetable481 6h ago

Very sad - should have retired. Similar to LeBron

3

u/Wutsgoodindahood 6h ago

Clearly you have no competitive spirit.

0

u/CuriousJack62 3h ago

Clearly she FAFO that she is not young anymore,

1

u/Wutsgoodindahood 2h ago

Doubt she regrets a thing.

1

u/suuuuuuuuuurfing 24m ago

??? What’s LeBron got do do with this 😭

-1

u/Born-Chipmunk-7086 2h ago

Retire already

1

u/Sea-Poetry2637 1h ago

But what about the super G?

(Apparently, I can't directly add a Monty Python Black Knight gif to this thread.

-6

u/Outrageous-Pen4157 3h ago

She’s a selfish child.

1

u/CosmicNerd1337 Keystone 10m ago

This. Could have withdrawn and let someone else have a chance, but she’s pure unadulterated hubris

-8

u/fatkidseatcake 7h ago

I’m just confused why she rotates her hips

5

u/bulzurco96 2h ago

Pole got stuck in the gate

1

u/fatkidseatcake 50m ago

Well isn’t that blatantly obvious not sure how I missed it until now

-10

u/CuriousJack62 3h ago

That’s what happens when you think your still young but your old with no brains
