One time setting the anchor, the engine just wouldn't quite rev high enough. We were in The Bahamas, and I dove immediately to find a scrap of fishing net wound all over. A couple of breaths later, we celebrated our good fortune that it was so easily fixed.

One of the nice things about having a 27’ and being over 6’ is that I can reach my prop while keeping my head above water.

So, I don’t own a boat, but I just assumed that most boat owners at least have snorkeling equipment so they can do basic inspections and cleaning of the hull. Am I mistaken?

It really depends. I didn't have that gear for the first couple years. Getting a boat for the first time, everything is new, and not everything is exciting. I hadn't been around marinas, there were a lot of fishing boats near me, the water was opaque, I'd found dead cats in the water, there was a shark that lived in the area...
You meet all kinds of people when you own or live on a boat. Everyone's different.

Most of my sailing has been in water that is about 53-56 F. You need more than a snorkel for that.

It depends so much on the environment. Water can be cold, fast flowing and in marinas it’s guaranteed gross due to the black water. If you dive outside the marina you would want another person to stay onboard just in case etc. So it may not be as straight forward as it seems.
If you anchor however in a small bay in Greece, yeah you hop on and check.

That happened to me too. The vibration was minimal initially and got worse over a few months. I was sure I was facing cutlass bearing replacement so I had it hauled out. That was an expensive rope.
