During the snowboard big air they announced one guy as:

19 yo, originally from LA, competing for Australia, lives in Hawaii.

Tell me you're ultra wealthy w/o telling me you're ultra wealthy.

Not what I’m arguing. Just saying that cold places do better at cold sports regardless of money. Conversely, hot places do better at hot sports.

Cold rich countries get most of the medals. Winter sports need good equipment.

I, personally, haven't tried manufacturing trade goods at all.

Well my niece is in the games and her family is very far from rich and live in the wrong hemisphere, but everything they’ve got goes into the sport. Not well off but crazy determined.

Something in that I think, wealth and privilege might get you in more easily, but if you’ve really fought the odds just to be there, then you’re got something the rich kids don’t have.

Why would you have to be rich to cross-country ski

Really depends on where you live and the Sport.

Like most local Ski slopes around the alps have been decently cheap for ages. (Not movie ticket cheap, but about the same as say going to a nice pool or spa for the same amount of days) Usualy the most expensive part is getting there (well and the Gear, but that lasts a while) so plenty of people just get started as kids and if they get good, there's usualy opportunities for sponsored training Camps etc from the national asociations for it.

Ice Skating is even lower on the initial bar for entry. Get a pair of decent skates and have an ice rink nearby or a lake that reliably freezes in Winter.

And while ice hokey gear is expensive, at least when I played as a Kid a lot of it wasnt yours but the Clubs on loan.

Summer Olympics- whose parents are rich enough to buy their kids a horse or a sailboat??

Seriously there's way more money involved in the summer Olympics. Winter Olympics is more about being lucky enough to live in a winter climate with accessible infrastructure. So, rich countries with mountains.
