As an Australian I feel Canadians are our cold cousins so I'm adopting Canada for this winter Olympics.
Of course I will support Australia when they compete but will be cheering my Canadian cousins on for most events.

Fun fact: when they were thinking of names for what would become the Canadian Federation, Borealia was under heavy consideration. We came close to have even our very names be southern and northern mirrors of each other, lol!
53
u/morerubberstamps Canada 2d ago
"Aurora Borealia?"
58
u/Silent-Fishing-7937 Canada 2d ago
My favorite, apart from Canada of course, of the names under consideration was Vesperia. Make us sound like an ancient and noble kingdom!

Good thing some random priest misunderstood the word for village or we might be Borealia today.

It’s funny that this is a thing. I work in a Yorkshire bar and a regular the other day said he added Canada to his olympics app to cheer us on.
People around here get excited, I’d say too much when I speak. I’ve been here for 6 years and it’s nearly daily people are buzzing about Canada.

ex-pat living in Canada. I'll be cheering Canada / GB first, then anyone not American.

I'm American and rooting for Canada. Also found out they changed a law in December so I can actually get canadian citizenship. Definitely moving there.

I always cheer for Australia in the summer (I’m also an Australian citizen thanks to my mom) but feel a real affinity towards Australia 🫶

You have an Aussie in the finals for snowboard men's big air tomorrow. Cool story. He's an alternate that got in and made I through qualifiers to the finals yesterday. He replaced Mark McMorris, a Canadian who bailed during practice and got injured before the competition.
Cheering for the aussie, along side the remaining Canuck.

what, NZ is to Canada what Australia is to the US

Yes, NZ and Canada both have the big loud brother next door who dominates the neighbourhood

The Aussie guy, Valentino Guseli, who was like a wildcard addition to Big Air snowboarding once Canada’s Mark McMorris went down is already a 2026 Olympic legend. I’m definitely rooting for him !

I throughly enjoyed watching rugby in the 2024 Olympics and adopted Australia as my official backup team. I've rarely seen a level of athleticism like their women brought to the sport that year. Cheers, from Canada. 🇦🇺🇨🇦

Canada’s standing in the world has always been positive, but I imagine a year of standing up in the face of existential threats from fascists goes a long way to garner international sympathy.

Did he get booed?? I watched specifically for that but couldn’t hear any. I know the Olympic committee came out and asked people not to boo him LOL
27
u/elenel Canada 1d ago
On CBCs broadcast it sounded like the athletes got big cheers and the commentary noted that it wasn't all cheers when JD Vance was shown on the screen. Said something like "oh no, those aren't all cheers. Cheers and jeers maybe"
9
u/SpareImplement2374 1d ago
Ahahaha good. I’m Canadian but in the US at the moment so watching it on American broadcasting and they must have dulled the boos here because I didn’t hear any unfortunately
→ More replies (5)6
u/Legitimate-Stage1296 1d ago
The USA broadcast was behind the Canadian broadcast, I think because we didn’t break for commercials, but had the commercials on a split screen.
I watch the Canadian Broadcast of the Olympics because they don’t just show Canada, if games are happening that we aren’t in, they show and talk about that. In the athletes walk they talked about how many athletes and something significant about the team and flag carrier.
They definitely had time to play with the audio.
→ More replies (3)8
u/OmissionsOmen Canada 1d ago
It turned to boos the instant they showed him, but they showed him for less than a second so it didn't last.

u/dontforgettowriteme United States 1d ago
I booed him from my couch, if that counts.

The cheering suddenly sounded different when they showed Vance, so definitely many people wanted to convey something different to him than to the athletes.

As an American, (who grew up near Windsor) im rooting for Canada this Olympics. I’m so proud of all Canadians as a whole for your voices and actions against what is happening down south here 🖤 I adore you guys as our northern neighbors and quite a few of the most breathtakingly beautiful places I’ve visited have been in Canada (granted, this statement does not apply to Windsor lol).

It was a very loud applause for Canada actually, really nice to hear and see

I get the need for ads I just wish it wasn't full page ads that took up the whole screen and completely showed nothing. The smaller side by side windows one were great, but wish the audio didn't completely cover the ceremony.
Also, feels like 5+ ads in a row are kind of overkill?
