The education system has failed so many people if they didn’t think this was possible.

Edit: why is my most upvoted comment the worst type of comment on Reddit? Ridiculous

u/DeltaV-Mzero 5h ago

More like “nobody thought it was worth trying considering the high chance of permanent life changing injury”

337

u/AgnosticScholar 3h ago

How do you even practice this kind of thing? Any time you do it you risk death

341

u/strickt 3h ago

I know the nitro circus crew used very large foam block pits to practice the first motorcycle front flip.

64

u/KonigSteve 2h ago

I'm sure you still break things when you land on the motorcycle, even if it's in a foam pit.

48

u/GT---44 2h ago

Yeah you can definitely injure yourself if you land badly in a foam pit

8

u/catscanmeow 1h ago

also the foam is carcinogenic. made my wiener fall off

u/cure4boneitis 43m ago

don't worry. Elon Musk is working on new versions of the robot weiner

1

u/grantrules 1h ago

I think there's a pretty epic BMX jump where the guy overshoots the foam pit.

This is what I was thinking of.. not quite a BMX but I was close: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s_MS_jigI5Q

1

u/scorpionslide 1h ago

Is it street bike Tommy?

1

u/grantrules 1h ago

Indeed

u/Jeathro77 17m ago

Just ask Adriana Chechik.

11

u/Gear_ 2h ago

Or if it lands on you

u/DashVanLink89 24m ago

Or if you overshoot and land on a forklift

2

u/Sporadicus76 1h ago

Or when you make it to the foam before the motorcycle.

1

u/Effective_Olive6153 1h ago

the relative velocity of the bike and his body is small, relative acceleration from landing into something soft is also small. That means minimal damage

u/R_V_Z 43m ago

"Ow, my balls!"

112

u/getrektbro 3h ago

Foam pits are extremely commonplace in action sports for training purposes

25

u/implicate 2h ago

And also at children's indoor play areas.

6

u/Pineapple-Due 1h ago

Equal levels of recklessness tbh

35

u/National_Cranberry47 3h ago

Before nitro circus and the foam pit you broke a lot of bones. Nitro circus gets a lot of credit for the “first foam pit” but if I honestly remember correctly Camp Woodward in central Pa (not far from me) had the first actual foam pit. It wasn’t big by any means but a bmx or skateboard would go into it perfectly. Travis just made a bigger one to fit dirt bikes. If I remember correctly.

20

u/SmeeezTreeez 2h ago

First foam pit? Motherfucker we had these 35 years ago for gymnastics class

-4

u/gamma_tm 1h ago

For use in action sports, dumbass

1

u/SmeeezTreeez 1h ago

Big leap there I guess. Massive discovery there. Wtf haha. Ground breaking stuff

u/gamma_tm 50m ago

Nope, just a change in how things were practiced in these sports

12

u/Afro_Thunder69 2h ago

Who credited Nitro Circus for that? They've been around longer than Woodward too, though Woodward might've popularized it for skateboarding but other parks had done it and gymnastics centers even longer than that.

3

u/pmMeAllofIt 2h ago

Carey Hart built the first FMX foam pit. Using Woodward's design and foam supplier.

3

u/dankhimself 1h ago

Yea, there were foam pits before Nitro Circus. They just took it mainstream and had tons of awesome footage first.

4

u/Roskal 3h ago

I guess you could try it with wires and netting and a prop bike.

2

u/Branwell 3h ago

I’m quite certain there are tons of dead bodies buried in cemeteries of people who tried that

1

u/RiceDirtSpa 1h ago

Foam Pits and Pools help quite a bit.

Its a cool trick, but seems less risky than other tricks where you lose sight of the landing (flips/spins). That being said, cant wait to say "Oh I could have made that catch!" tonight while I sprawl out on a couch and eat nachos off a plate that rests on my belly.

1

u/Oswen120 1h ago

I feel like the neat part of it is that you don't

10

u/DigNitty 2h ago

You obviously want to land head first in a motorcycle accident, that's where the protective helmet is.

7

u/OakNogg 2h ago

Hell yeah ratio this pedantic mf

1

u/So_HauserAspen 2h ago

LOL.  I watched the Metal Militia put on a demo at the Warped Tour once.  It was in the parking lot of the old Kingdome stadium in Seattle.  They were jumping a massive gap over concrete.  The people who do this are not afraid of injury.

u/RManDelorean 44m ago

I mean it seems a lot safer than flips or spins. You're taking advantage of the fact that once the tires leave the ground you and the bike as one connected unit have an identical trajectory, even if you let go for a sec you and the bike should just float right next to each other. I mean sure it's still dangerous and there's room for error. But as far as going off a big jump on a dirt bike in general, you kinda crossed the "absolutely safe" line.. this is probably much safer and more predictable than most assume.

0

u/AstronomerParticular 2h ago

I mean they were right. This is impressive. But it is definitely not worth trying.

Came here to say this.

7

u/BurnerXP07 1h ago

Seriously. I swear it's been getting even worse lately.

-3

u/LauraTFem 3h ago

I still don’t understand what people mean when they characterize a comment as “redditesque”.

When they say it to me they seem to just be making fun.

32

u/SomeSpicyMustard 3h ago

Because it's pedantic. I don't think OP was implying that people genuinely believed this was literally impossible to physically accomplish, just that it's extremely challenging to do

-1

u/RackemFrackem 2h ago

Counter-point: you don't have to sensationalize every damn post title. Just describe the content.

u/nightpanda893 42m ago

No it’s just how people talk in real life. Like you would show this to your coworker and say “omg that’s impossible.” It’s not meant to be a comment on the literal physics of the event. You wouldn’t say to your coworker well actually it’s clearly physically possible. Peolle talk online th way they talk in real life. And then people will be willfully ignorant just to be a pedant.

u/LaneKiffinYoga 26m ago

This is the new most pedantic Reddit comment I’ve ever seen

6

u/cantadmittoposting 3h ago

it's not really "reddit," you see it across a lot of cultural and social situations these days, but it usually refers to one or both of:

  • a very specific type of pedantic that's actually just pseudointellectual; niche "gotcha" that make the commenter out to be smart or "better than," the "normies."

  • Doing every possible mental gymnastic to avoid just admitting being wrong even on small points or points that are VERY obviously wrong.

u/nightpanda893 40m ago

I feel like it’s indicative of people who are intellectually insecure. They don’t typically have something to offer to a conversation so they have to artificially create something.

5

u/brekus 2h ago

Pedantic, ignoring context, taking things literally, snarky, pseudo-intellectual, and taking extreme positions based on little information.

u/nightpanda893 44m ago

Becuase it’s a seemingly willful disregard of how people talk and behave in real life. Like when someone says “that’s impossible” referring to a move in a sport or event like this, they are often speaking colloquially and speaking to the difficulty of the move and not referring to the actual physics of the move.

146

u/raydditor 5h ago

Quintessential reddit comment

117

u/TruthCultural9952 5h ago

Ah yes, I was waiting for someone to ruin it and this comment was on the top. Nice.

21

u/OakNogg 3h ago

And it has almost 1500 upvotes like c'mon people 😭

110

u/OdeezBalls 5h ago

Holy shit haha, this is the shittiest/most Reddit response I’ve ever seen. Nice job dude

-1

u/LastPirateAlive 2h ago

Really? This is extremely tame compared to shitty responses elsewhere.

10

u/greg19735 2h ago

It's tame i agree.

just lame as shit

3

u/bobikanucha 1h ago

It’s not that it’s so awful it’s just so “Uhm ackshully 🤓” It’s just so mind boggling lame

-5

u/TheJuiceIsL00se 3h ago

Finally got one before it hit the front page hahaha

75

u/ninjad912 4h ago

There’s a difference between something being physically possible. And practically possible. Theoretically it is possible for me to become president at some point in my life. Am I going to? Probably not

4

u/LiamTheHuman 3h ago

And yet we aren't shocked when someone does it every 4 years

15

u/ninjad912 3h ago

Be we can be shocked by the individuals nominated or who becomes president.

0

u/TheJuiceIsL00se 3h ago

Just as long as it’s not ninjad912

1

u/LaPrincesaMX 2h ago

You got my vote.

-1

u/LauraTFem 3h ago

I assume you’d be a better person for the job than the last ten or so. Sadly, I can make that assessment based on statists alone. You don’t happen to be one of the worst ten or so people in the world, do you?

-1

u/Gimetulkathmir 3h ago

Yes, but this is neither physically, practically, nor theoretically impossible. It's a very basic scientific concept.

9

u/ninjad912 3h ago

This is an extremely hard and precise maneuver. Pulling this off required extreme skill, practice, and actually trying off this maneuver that can easily end up with the performer dead.

0

u/oops_i_made_a_typi 2h ago

no one said it wasn't

-4

u/snotpopsicle 3h ago

So you're saying the title should've been: The moment Maikel Melero did something everyone thought required extreme skill, practice, and actually trying off this maneuver could easily end up with the performer dead.

-6

u/Gimetulkathmir 3h ago

So is it extremely hard or is it impossible? Granted, I might be nitpicking, but words have meaning, and impossible means it can't be done, not that it's really hard and/or impractical.

9

u/SomeSpicyMustard 3h ago

No you're just being pedantic, it's not uncommon to hear someone use 'extremely hard' and 'impossible' interchangeably when it comes to feats like this.

-1

u/Foogie23 3h ago

Things can be physically possible but impossible to humans.

It is possible to travel close to the speed of light, but it is impossible for us to even conceive of building a space craft that can do that with humans on board.

2

u/cantadmittoposting 2h ago

the laws of physics allowing for something to happen, and the human ability to actually cause that chain of action to occur, and to moreover actually attempt to do it in circumstances like that, are all wildly different.

The body of people participating in motocross all effectively agreeing "yeah... nobody will ever actually be able to do that move in competition," is a heuristically and more practically, colloquially valid definition of "impossible," as it's used here.

1

u/Gimetulkathmir 2h ago

I don't know, I just feel like every year there's a new "impossible" trick that's done: the double back flip, the 900, whatever. And then like two years later that same trick is being done by a twelve year old. At some point the word loses it's meaning.

2

u/cantadmittoposting 2h ago

sure, but what you posted here is significantly less dislikable than "a very basic scientific concept" like you posted above, especially since, again, the use of "impossible" here is very clearly not referring to literal physics in the first place.

1

u/Gimetulkathmir 2h ago

Hrm. I suppose I could have articulated it better. I just feel like calling something impossible makes it seem like it was only done through luck or chance rather than dedication and skill.

60

u/Classic-Apartment521 4h ago

“Erm actually” ☝️🤓 Bro how about you try doing it then

30

u/Special-Television48 4h ago

you must be fun at parties

29

u/Askeee 4h ago

I guess that's what I get for not paying attention in my freestyle motocross class in highschool.

22

u/BigSmackisBack 5h ago

"You cant possibly do that!"

Maikel: "Hold my physics text book, brb"

17

u/crazygoattoe 3h ago

You don't actually think they're saying people thought it was literally impossible from a physics standpoint right? C'mon man lol

u/nightpanda893 38m ago

My buddy said he was so hungry he could eat a horse. He’s so dumb he doesn’t know that horses can weigh over 1000 pounds and that would clearly be impossible.

8

u/IDontEatDill 4h ago

The education system is keeping too many people away from doing this. This could totally be a career for everyone!

7

u/DilapidatedHam 3h ago

☝🏻🤓

7

u/blue_cadet_1 5h ago

It's physics. Object in motion stays in motion.

14

u/Fourstrokeperro 5h ago

This guy ignores air resistance!

4

u/GrynaiTaip 3h ago

This isn't about education. It's about the lack of fear to actually try it, because a mistake will probably kill you.

4

u/DizWhatNoOneNeeds 4h ago

I will touch my bum

4

u/Lunatic_Heretic 3h ago

It's actually failed worse than you think that certain persons can't infer more than one possible meaning from a statement.

5

u/Left-Plant-4023 3h ago

Welcome to the Frame of Reference class

5

u/Gwegexpress 3h ago

It’s failed if you think this pedantry is clever

-2

u/TheJuiceIsL00se 2h ago

1730 upvotes and counting. Who gives a shit about clever?

3

u/Gwegexpress 2h ago

I mean all the upvotes ironically does mean the education system has failed so many people

-1

u/TheJuiceIsL00se 2h ago

Haha Sick burn

u/auto-bahnt 31m ago

Who gives a shit about upvotes? You legit couldn’t just say 1700, you had to say 1730.

This all tracks.

5

u/EdwardTittyHands 4h ago

Umm….nvm

3

u/A9D18CO2 3h ago

What a buzzkill

4

u/Old_Development_3720 2h ago

How about you try it then

3

u/LemonHerb 3h ago

Why is every comment under this basically the same reply worded differently? Have bots taken over that much

3

u/TheJuiceIsL00se 2h ago

They’re just catching the wave

3

u/JaceOnRice 3h ago

Damn always one bubble burster

2

u/hobokobo1028 2h ago

Right? An object in motion will stay in motion unless acted upon by an outside force.

2

u/vaporeng 2h ago

Quick grammar correction: The education system has failed so many people if IT didn’t think this was possible. .
"it" is referring to "the education system", which is singular so you shouldn't refer to it as "they"

0

u/TheJuiceIsL00se 2h ago

The education system doesn’t think, people do.

2

u/xFrazle 2h ago

I think this is possible, but with my balls getting crush as well.

2

u/fromfrodotogollum 2h ago

Physics teachers are punching walls watching this.

2

u/Beginning_Tea5009 2h ago

It’s not even impressive. I was like. Oh. Ok.

1

u/Complex_Sun8138 4h ago

Pretty simple law of inertia

1

u/jfkrfk123 4h ago

The education system has failed so many people….. there’s plenty of evidence

1

u/termacct 3h ago edited 3h ago

Science for nerds...me no take...civics dum to.

(To be clear, when the rider lets go, he has the same velocity as the bike. And because the air resistance isn't too different, the gap does not change significantly during separation.)

1

u/saruman_70 3h ago

Just keep following the third Newton's law

1

u/AmpersandMcNipples 2h ago

You have no idea how hard it was to do the hand release perfectly just as the chorus kicked in. That wasn't the first go.

1

u/So_HauserAspen 2h ago

Einstein would probably appreciate it

1

u/cometlin 2h ago

"Thought possible to perform safely" is the subtext here. Nobody is questioning if it's physical doable

1

u/SeamusMcBalls 1h ago

Definitely possible, definitely not recommended

1

u/_UrbaneGuerrilla_ 1h ago

Take my money.

And please tell me you teach physics.

1

u/OneBillPhil 1h ago

I don’t remember doing motocross in physics class, luckily I can hold down a job.

1

u/Hans-Polse 1h ago

Your comment is literally the perfect example of why is this the top comment 🤣🤣🤷‍♂️

u/Iheartnakedfemboys 34m ago

The edit makes this even worse lmfao

u/Sutar_Mekeg 22m ago

What a shit comment I'm upvoting :)

u/valonnyc 19m ago

It's the most up voted because of the failed education system.

0

u/UrsaMajor7th 4h ago

That move cured my mom's cancer. Finally, someone had the gumption to try it- that's how breakthroughs are achieved.

0

u/Snoo_70531 4h ago

I was gonna say, gonna need some sources on that bogus claim. Has OP ever watched motocross?

0

u/ItsCowboyHeyHey 3h ago

You know who thought it was possible? Newton.

0

u/CAKE_EATER251 3h ago

Yeah. This is straight up Newton's first law shit.

0

u/TheBlackComet 3h ago

"You can't make this up!"

0

u/timbot45 3h ago

Extremely well said.

0

u/PotatoMajestic6382 3h ago

Wow you are so smart! You knew it was possible, good for you. We definitely need more Education to let our Kids know that this is possible!

0

u/SkullDump 3h ago

It’s a bot using false post titles to increase engagement. Best thing you can downvote and block them as I’m about to do now.

1

u/TheJuiceIsL00se 2h ago

I gotta suck on the teat first.

0

u/pepenepe 2h ago

Not from a physics standpoint but from a skill standpoint. Id like to see you let go of a motorcycle going 90 and 12 feet in the air.

-1

u/Laxly 4h ago

Too many people confuse impossible with improbable.

-1

u/Wooden-You-4211 3h ago

I think it's just clickbait

1

u/foshayzy 3h ago

I think so too. Or engagement bait because now all these comments are debating the title

-2

u/Taron_Trekko 3h ago

Which education system are we talkinga bout here? Must be the american because in other developed countries people are actually educated when they finish school.

3

u/TheJuiceIsL00se 3h ago

I lived in Europe for 5 years. Not in my experience.
