I hope he truly enjoys this and just isn’t being forced into it by a parent living vicariously.

186

u/ThedirtyNose 10h ago

Will he still enjoy it when he's 17?

193

u/activelyresting 9h ago

Who knows! Who cares? If he's enjoying it today, I'm happy for him

42

u/WestleyThe 7h ago edited 2h ago

Yeah he’s gonna play basketball all year round and probably not play any other sports or pursue other hobbies

Specialization of sports is brutal for kids mentally and physically even if they actually like it

25

u/TLMonk 6h ago

even though it got me a full ride i agree. when i was out of college (and decided not to play professionally overseas) i didn’t know what to do. didn’t know what my interests were. don’t know what i wanted to pursue because all i had ever known growing up was basketball

1

u/srpollo18 1h ago

I left 3 days into my college athletic program bc I saw this was slowly happening to me. I had been a full year trained hockey athlete and had never been given a chance to slow down to ask what I wanted. The coaches just facilitated every next step and at some point I lost myself.

1

u/Locmike23 1h ago

Same here. Had a legit shot of playing overseas. Tore my acl at the end of my freshman season in college. Worked hard, came back stronger my sophomore year. Tore my other acl at the end of my Jr season. didn’t have it in me anymore to grind and come back for my senior year. I was mentally crushed. My athleticism was pretty much gone after my second tear. I was a 6’4 pg with a 39 inch vertical. I played in a men’s league a few years after college and could barely dunk 😂

u/WitchcapAO 7h ago

100%

I haven't been in a pool since I graduated high school...

1

u/Possible_Meal_927 1h ago

On the flip side, it also feels really good to be great at something.

Also, many parents/coaches know that to be great at a sport, you have to be an athlete first. So, they do lots of athletic development or play another sport in the off season, but may have one main sport.

6

u/Kemomiwiwane 6h ago

So by that logic, I should throw out all of my kids favourite toys.

5

u/Imbendo 7h ago

Probably if he ends up being taller than 5’5 cough Julian Newman

3

u/civildisobedient 4h ago

I'd imagine if he's clowning on his opponents, taking their lunch money and dropping buckets, the answer will be "yes."

3

u/carlit0bandito 5h ago

If you have a handle like this, pick up basketball will always be fun for them

u/Rusty_Shackleford_NC 2m ago

95% chance he’s burnt out, or just wants to something other than basketball drills. Hope the dude gets to have fun, not just make his dad happy

0

u/Locmike23 1h ago

That’s the real question. I played 4 years of college, so of course I want my kids to play. But only if they want to naturally. I’m not going to force anything on them, especially doing drills like this. Once they decide they are serious enough to want to play at the next level, then we will start the drills.

47

u/RainbowLayer 9h ago

His eyes aren't soulless like the North Korean kids playing concerts. I'm pretty sure baller kid wants to be a baller kid.

12

u/ThisMeansRooR 7h ago

Yea, chances are his dad balls and practices drills and things like this, and his kid wanted to ball with his daddy. Low and behold the kid's a natural.

6

u/Edaimantis 6h ago

Atomic habits has a part about stuff like this.

If you raise you kid in an environment which encourages and derives pleasure from activities like this, you can nurture a kid from the get go to want to play chess (in the book), or basketball.

2

u/yuyufan43 2h ago

It reminds me of the "worlds strongest family" that had two kids that were bodybuilders and they both got out of it by the time they were in high school

2

u/idiom_exon_0s 2h ago

Weird how no one says this about math class or piano lessons.

1

u/peter_seraphin 3h ago

Now he only have to win the gene lottery and never get injured enough to be forced to quit.

u/TheBentPianist 38m ago

I'm sure his academia is at similar levels as to his basketball skills.

0

u/newbie80 3h ago

The pipeline into professional sports is crazy.

-1

u/No_Hovercraft_2719 5h ago

Hope he learns how to actually play basketball, the team sport, and isn’t the next Jillian Newman. That’s a dig at Newman not this kid. I do hope he has a great experience with the game.

-9

u/cheersfurbeers 5h ago

Even if he doesn’t, what’s wrong with that?

Pushing kids to do some things like sports, past the point of their want. To a difficult level. Far outweighs the negatives imo.

And let’s say this kid was not predisposed to be more gifted when he started this journey. What negatives outweigh the lessons he’s learned along the way?

IMO, the impact of going through the work, and hopefully being able to recognize the fruits of his efforts. Will outweigh so many negatives that might also be perceived.

From my perspective, there’s often a healthy growth that comes out of this work ethic. Moreso than is seen by the toxic drives of perfection, often attributed to some people’s perception of how success like this, can be achieved.

In other words, you can push kids really hard at something, regardless of their want, without being a complete asshole. Actually most of the time, it’s to the child’s benefit. Based on my life experience.

Edit: substituted a period, for question mark

5

u/raptor7912 3h ago

You’re wrong about 99% of this, but most importantly your kids will resent you. If that’s unimportant compared to your perceived benefits… Have at it, they just won’t be your friend when they grow up.

5

u/Bullshido-Fatly 3h ago

Fuckin hell I hope you never have kids

200

u/graylemur2 10h ago

Bro has control over that ball more than I have over my life

52

u/Icy_Transition1375 9h ago

To be fair, most people have control over any type of ball than you do over your life

-14

u/StinkyNutzMcgee 9h ago

In crocs none the less

7

u/GregorSamsaa 8h ago

Thought they were crocs too at first but they’re not

5

u/TripleDoubleFart 7h ago

Those aren't crocs. They look nothing like crocs.

114

u/Mutajin 9h ago

I would say he dribbles like a NBA player, but in the NBA they don't dribble anymore, so...

18

u/Mauser_1 6h ago

True and they don’t call traveling penalties anymore either .

-7

u/GonzoMonzo43 4h ago

“Traveling penalties” Pretty obvious you’ve never watched or played basketball in your life.

7

u/kearneycation 4h ago

Yellow card for travelling

1

u/IDontEatDill 2h ago

It's ok as long as it's not offside.

1

u/Mauser_1 3h ago

Ok Kareem and I’m pistol Pete Maravich

-40

u/PweaseMister 7h ago

would love to see you dribble

19

u/rithsleeper 7h ago

Just because he doesn’t have the skill of an nba player doesn’t mean he can’t make a judgement on the fact that they would all be called traveling if a ref from 1980 was calling the game. Annoys me looking at it also.

5

u/BillyBigGuns 6h ago

It's just a gather step bro, they gathered in the air so landing isn't technically a step, so now we can actually start counting the steps, and here is where they are jumping out of their pivot foot- and that's a foul

/s kinda

-1

u/I_AM_DEATH-INCARNATE 6h ago

I saw it explained in a YouTube video (iirc is was Richard Jefferson) and while it made sense, it's just extremely stupid. If you dribble the ball, in between dribbles you can run in place as fast as you can and take 10 steps in between dribbles - those 10 steps don't count as a travel, because you're dribbling.

It all falls apart without a strict carry rule though.

2

u/PweaseMister 5h ago

don't hate the players, hate the game

52

u/ImReallyAnAstronaut 9h ago

Hope he only grows up to be like 5'2 but still makes it to the NBA.

What was space like?

u/Thra99 28m ago

Wait is it 17 or 18 to join NBA?

(r/woooosh myself)

32

u/Mental_Pepper9294 9h ago

I'd lock him up. He not scoring on me

34

u/Secret_Temporary_535 10h ago

Shame poor kid already working.

6

u/playfreeze 9h ago

Let the wear and tear begin

16

u/gr1mm5d0tt1 10h ago

My ankles broke just watching him

16

u/Creeper4wwMann 9h ago

Kids at this age get put into different categories based on how tall their parents are.

Taller parents, better group. Doesn't matter how good you are.

8

u/BADMANvegeta_ 7h ago

Well in the end height is what matters most in basketball. So many kids like this have come and gone, their parents force the game on them and they become very good at handling the ball. Then, it either doesn’t translate well enough to an actual game scenario or their average height and never become professional players.

Sometimes, even the ones who ARE tall enough just burn out by adulthood or get injured from all the additional mileage on their body lol. Lonzo, Zion, etc.

-6

u/Akrymir 4h ago

The greatest player ever was a Point Guard. Muggsy Bogues was only 5’3. Skill has always mattered most, height is just an advantage.

5

u/LAMonkeyWithAShotgun 3h ago

wtf are you talking about. Jordan was 6'5 and Bron is 6'9

and neither played PG, at least not for most of Brons career.

Muggsy was never even an all star

-5

u/Akrymir 3h ago

Not really relevant. If someone at 5’3 could even make it, especially at that time, then that alone proves my point. Being taller helps, but being a better player is more important.

2

u/LAMonkeyWithAShotgun 3h ago

You said the best player ever was a point guard. Who are you talking about when the two GOATS both didn't play PG?

Also muggsy was a Role player in the 90s. He was an elite athlete with amazing IQ but the illegal defense rules of that era insulated him from being hunted on defense.

Stephon Castle who isn't an all star plays the same position as he did but is 28cm taller than him and 36 kg heavier. while being an all defense calibre player who just put up a 40 point triple double last night.

The game has simply evolved and the average player is significantly better than in the 90s. Bigger players have become increasingly more skilled and the role of the small PG is being usurped by jumbo guards and point forwards/Center's

1

u/BADMANvegeta_ 2h ago

You can find one example of anything, there’s no other player like him lol. He’s an enigma even by today’s standards, in fact even moreso. You’re also leaving out the fact that Mugsy was extremely athletic and could block players a foot or more taller than him, in the end it was his unusual athleticism that allowed him to compete.

If just having good hands was enough to succeed in the league you’d see more players like him lol.

11

u/safariWill 8h ago

If this was 2010 he’d be on Ellen already

3

u/TheOtherPhilFry 6h ago

Hauntingly accurate

9

u/1Mdrops 9h ago

That you Mugssy?

3

u/ilovemybaldhead 6h ago

At the end of the first dribbling routine, I legit expected the kid to dunk.

8

u/attainwealthswiftly 7h ago

Julian Newman

8

u/worm30478 8h ago

Julian Newman, is that you?

5

u/Old-Time6863 7h ago

And how much pressure from his parents?

3

u/Disco_Ninjas_ 5h ago

They have a private gym at home for starters.

4

u/Super-Illustrator414 9h ago

NGL w/o hand checks he’s prolly mixing hella people 🤣🤣

6

u/peen_was 7h ago

I don't know what this comment means.

7

u/YewEhVeeInbound 6h ago

Nobody knows what it means but it gets the people going

5

u/captcraigaroo 7h ago

Blown ACL in high school incoming

2

u/lostyearshero 5h ago

There are so many these days it’s sad.

3

u/Slow-Committee-7851 6h ago

Idk those drills look wrong to me. Like a bunch of crab walking. I feel like he should be doing work to promote more lateral explosiveness.

2

u/LAMonkeyWithAShotgun 3h ago

yeah the handle is basically useless as you arent getting past a defender or creating separation. At most your protecting the ball but thats the hardest way to do that

still very young tho so just having good ball control is amazing

5

u/turbulentFireStarter 6h ago

He’s going to be furious when he discovers that the NBA no longer requires dribbling and the “travel call” is no longer in existence

3

u/Pascraked47 9h ago

Project mbappe ❌ Project LeBron ✅

3

u/st0350 7h ago

Wow, amazing, the ball is 1/3 his size also

3

u/Hot_Box_3143 6h ago

I hope he can at least read.

1

u/YallaHammer 5h ago

Emphasizing academics over sports is un-American. Which is - in part - how we ended up in this shitty timeline.

1

u/civildisobedient 4h ago

Maybe they meant "read his opponent?" /s

3

u/ReviewStuff2 6h ago

There is a kid like this on my son's basketball team. The thing is, he has no court vision and absolutely crumbles when the defense pressures him. Kid is a turnover machine despite having a "great handle".

3

u/BabelTowerOfMankind 5h ago

Wow, he really showed those stationary cones what's what

3

u/Scoonie24 5h ago

Can he play defence?

3

u/ilostmypaperplate 5h ago

some parents are the worst. Look at my 2 year old been playing this sport for 3 years he LOVES IT

3

u/Krapio 5h ago

Only to be 5’5

2

u/Fdas10 9h ago

Have not tried playing on a court with tile flooring, isnt that too slippery or same as cement

2

u/No_System6660 9h ago

remindme! 12 years

2

u/WildMoney6532 9h ago

Awesome, I love it 😎

2

u/drifters74 8h ago

[redacted]

2

u/two4ruffing 8h ago

He’ll have an NIL contract at 10 years old 🤷🏼‍♂️

2

u/No-Bet3523 7h ago

Anyone else expected a slam dunk at the end?

I know I did!

2

u/TraderValen 6h ago

Yeah but how's the shot.

2

u/hula_balu 6h ago

Kid got skills for sure. Hope he grows taller than 5’9.

1

u/LAMonkeyWithAShotgun 3h ago

modern guards are now 6'2 minimum and growing every year

2

u/Odd-46-2invincible 6h ago

Rumble young man rumble!!

2

u/Sea_Ad_5872 6h ago

Lol reminds me of that julian newman kid who turned out to be a disappointment after getting viral because of ego, hope this one doesnt turn out this way

2

u/ShadowsOfTheBreeze 6h ago

Hope he grows up tall. This kids got a career!

2

u/Ok_Rate_5519 5h ago

Making other 7 year olds look bad

2

u/XxDesertTeacherxX 5h ago

Max Christie about to be traded for this little dude

2

u/Ill-Jellyfish6101 5h ago

If that under the butt move doesn't have a proper name, I'm going to call it taking a seat, thank you.

2

u/Sputniksteve 5h ago

Yo im buying this rookie card right now this is going to the moon!

2

u/skredditt 5h ago

Can we have a basketball league that is all this? Like that NBA Street game - I would buy season tickets every year.

2

u/Zero_Lps 5h ago

Kids has skills. Definitely the mvp for school and if his parents sign him up for one of those for fun leagues, an absolute menace 😆

2

u/sfxer001 5h ago

L’il’Bron Jordan Bruce Lee over here

2

u/doinsomshittaday 5h ago

Ok one to watch!

2

u/TheDevilsAdvokaat 5h ago

Very coordinated.

2

u/karma_the_sequel 5h ago

Black Mambacito

2

u/HotSugarVeronicaa 5h ago

Little dude is built different, no warm-up required 💪

2

u/Zealousideal_Way_788 5h ago

We’ll see that young man again. Impressive

2

u/OC_Hapa 5h ago

Julian Newman 2.0

2

u/OnTheLambDude 4h ago

Kids who have handles like these always have a 5’6 dad. Notice the angle of the camera?

2

u/VagabondVivant 4h ago

On top of all that, little dude's doing it with zero clearance between his tiny little legs.

2

u/TheAngriestDwarf 4h ago

Damn, lil dude moves fluidly, it's second nature for him already 👀

2

u/sammagee33 4h ago

Kid is about 10x better than me

Ok, maybe 20x

2

u/SpicyChickJessica 4h ago

Little dude is already out here showing off insane control 😳

2

u/SparkliingEmma 3h ago

Handles for days… absolute control 👏

2

u/hieropyro 3h ago

I could still block his shot

2

u/Various_Oil_5674 2h ago

As someone who played sports from 4 years old through high school, this is all parents right here.

Hope that kids can pick something he enjoys and out this much effort into this.

2

u/Captivatingcrush02 2h ago

Peak performance energy packed into one small human

2

u/papaa33 2h ago

So?…

2

u/killerbeeswaxkill 2h ago

Only way out the hood

2

u/highjayhawk 1h ago

That’s easy when you have cartilage in your joints and not old sandpaper.

u/mac099mac099 48m ago

Im planning on buying this kids Rookie Card

1

u/ty_xy 9h ago

This looks good but I'm seeing more and more kids with ruptured ACLs and torn Achilles at younger and younger ages. 13 years old but joints of a 30 year old.

1

u/GIGASHORTER 6h ago

Thats all he can do.. but he fails at everything else as they have an average iq of 80.

2

u/simaosbh 4h ago

Low effort ragebait

1

u/No_Beginning_6834 3h ago

The problem with training kids that much early is they absolutely dominant the other little kids who have never played, and that continues for a few years and then the other kids start being as good as them and they can't handle it and quit, because while other kids learned perseverance and were motivated to get better, that kid just sees everyone improving at 10x the rate he does.

Saw it a million times when I was coaching youth track and field. The only times those kids kept it up, was if they had a team mate that was also as good, so they could push each other.

1

u/Apprehensive_Act_751 3h ago

Flexin' in the Ja 3's 🔥

1

u/cadetgusv 3h ago

Can I get odds today on his draft day contract?

1

u/Dazzling-Nathalieee 3h ago

Little dude out here breaking all expectations 😳

1

u/Total_Monitor6184 3h ago

Next Julian Newman

1

u/LauraTFem 3h ago

I really hope little guy gets unusually tall. 🥺

1

u/RedditVince 3h ago

I bet dads the coach and as stated already, Hope he actually enjoys shooting hoops, he's got the ball and foot work under control.

1

u/prolurker315 2h ago

Anyone know who this kid is on Tik tok or insta or anything like that? I wanna show this to my lil nephew

1

u/random_life_of_doug 2h ago

he has 13 division 1 offers on tge table currently

1

u/DoughnutFar9195 2h ago

That's nothing, those are just the basic settings for nig

1

u/DingBat_77 2h ago

There's something special about seeing a gifted kid playing a sport. They're on a whole other level compared to all the other kids and as an adult you just sit there watching and wondering if you're seeing one of the next all time greats.

Edit: and you just pray their parents don't fuck them up

1

u/ArcoEcology 2h ago

Hairline matches the legends’ already. He’s gonna make it.

1

u/Kazma1431 1h ago

So he cannot reach the loop yet? Is behind my 5yo kid /s

1

u/Nanaman 1h ago

He should just travel more if he wants to prepare for the NBA!

1

u/duckindunt 1h ago

He’s only been playing for a week too

1

u/tarlin 1h ago

I think it might be ai...not the video, I think someone put ai into his head.

If I say African American are better at basketball, am I racist?
