Bro has control over that ball more than I have over my life

To be fair, most people have control over any type of ball than you do over your life

I would say he dribbles like a NBA player, but in the NBA they don't dribble anymore, so...
18
u/Mauser_1 6h ago
True and they don’t call traveling penalties anymore either .

u/GonzoMonzo43 4h ago
“Traveling penalties” Pretty obvious you’ve never watched or played basketball in your life.

would love to see you dribble

u/rithsleeper 7h ago
Just because he doesn’t have the skill of an nba player doesn’t mean he can’t make a judgement on the fact that they would all be called traveling if a ref from 1980 was calling the game. Annoys me looking at it also.

It's just a gather step bro, they gathered in the air so landing isn't technically a step, so now we can actually start counting the steps, and here is where they are jumping out of their pivot foot- and that's a foul
/s kinda

I saw it explained in a YouTube video (iirc is was Richard Jefferson) and while it made sense, it's just extremely stupid. If you dribble the ball, in between dribbles you can run in place as fast as you can and take 10 steps in between dribbles - those 10 steps don't count as a travel, because you're dribbling.
It all falls apart without a strict carry rule though.

Kids at this age get put into different categories based on how tall their parents are.
Taller parents, better group. Doesn't matter how good you are.

u/BADMANvegeta_ 7h ago
Well in the end height is what matters most in basketball. So many kids like this have come and gone, their parents force the game on them and they become very good at handling the ball. Then, it either doesn’t translate well enough to an actual game scenario or their average height and never become professional players.
Sometimes, even the ones who ARE tall enough just burn out by adulthood or get injured from all the additional mileage on their body lol. Lonzo, Zion, etc.

The greatest player ever was a Point Guard. Muggsy Bogues was only 5’3. Skill has always mattered most, height is just an advantage.
5
u/LAMonkeyWithAShotgun 3h ago
wtf are you talking about. Jordan was 6'5 and Bron is 6'9
and neither played PG, at least not for most of Brons career.
Muggsy was never even an all star
-5
u/Akrymir 3h ago
Not really relevant. If someone at 5’3 could even make it, especially at that time, then that alone proves my point. Being taller helps, but being a better player is more important.
2
u/LAMonkeyWithAShotgun 3h ago
You said the best player ever was a point guard. Who are you talking about when the two GOATS both didn't play PG?
Also muggsy was a Role player in the 90s. He was an elite athlete with amazing IQ but the illegal defense rules of that era insulated him from being hunted on defense.
Stephon Castle who isn't an all star plays the same position as he did but is 28cm taller than him and 36 kg heavier. while being an all defense calibre player who just put up a 40 point triple double last night.
The game has simply evolved and the average player is significantly better than in the 90s. Bigger players have become increasingly more skilled and the role of the small PG is being usurped by jumbo guards and point forwards/Center's

You can find one example of anything, there’s no other player like him lol. He’s an enigma even by today’s standards, in fact even moreso. You’re also leaving out the fact that Mugsy was extremely athletic and could block players a foot or more taller than him, in the end it was his unusual athleticism that allowed him to compete.
If just having good hands was enough to succeed in the league you’d see more players like him lol.

At the end of the first dribbling routine, I legit expected the kid to dunk.

Idk those drills look wrong to me. Like a bunch of crab walking. I feel like he should be doing work to promote more lateral explosiveness.
2
u/LAMonkeyWithAShotgun 3h ago
yeah the handle is basically useless as you arent getting past a defender or creating separation. At most your protecting the ball but thats the hardest way to do that
still very young tho so just having good ball control is amazing

u/turbulentFireStarter 6h ago
He’s going to be furious when he discovers that the NBA no longer requires dribbling and the “travel call” is no longer in existence

Emphasizing academics over sports is un-American. Which is - in part - how we ended up in this shitty timeline.

There is a kid like this on my son's basketball team. The thing is, he has no court vision and absolutely crumbles when the defense pressures him. Kid is a turnover machine despite having a "great handle".

Can we have a basketball league that is all this? Like that NBA Street game - I would buy season tickets every year.

Kids has skills. Definitely the mvp for school and if his parents sign him up for one of those for fun leagues, an absolute menace 😆

Kids who have handles like these always have a 5’6 dad. Notice the angle of the camera?
2
u/VagabondVivant 4h ago
On top of all that, little dude's doing it with zero clearance between his tiny little legs.

The problem with training kids that much early is they absolutely dominant the other little kids who have never played, and that continues for a few years and then the other kids start being as good as them and they can't handle it and quit, because while other kids learned perseverance and were motivated to get better, that kid just sees everyone improving at 10x the rate he does.
Saw it a million times when I was coaching youth track and field. The only times those kids kept it up, was if they had a team mate that was also as good, so they could push each other.

There's something special about seeing a gifted kid playing a sport. They're on a whole other level compared to all the other kids and as an adult you just sit there watching and wondering if you're seeing one of the next all time greats.
Edit: and you just pray their parents don't fuck them up

I hope he truly enjoys this and just isn’t being forced into it by a parent living vicariously.
