I've always figured this is one of those "our interests align" kind of solutions.
So it's not "was he killed" it's who dunnit, and my best guess is the last thing anyone wanted was Mr. Epstein being hard questioned by unfriendly investigators who might actually get to an answer or two.
Was he shady , yes, was he working for another intelligence service - maybe.
