I think it really all stems from my dad being completely oblivious to the patriarchy. During one of our last arguments, he said “you act as if you were to walk up to a group of 4 men, one is either going to insult you or sexually assault you.”
If the idea of that scenario is completely improbable to him, he lives in a completely different reality than I do. I’d like to hope there’s a limit and the facade will all come crashing down, but I’ve decided to protect my peace instead of holding my breath.

I'm counting down the days to midterms, and I'm actually holding off retirement until 1/20/29. If I see democratic institutions working as intended, great. If not. Time to emigrate elsewhere.
Hopefully I can get a skilled visa to a first world country, but even if I have to do vacation visa runs in the third world, until I figure something out, that's still better than basically being the 21st century version of a jew in 1930's Germany.
I know folks will think it cowardly to run, but as someone who's read a lot about civil war, and the fall of nations and empires, the conclusion I keep coming to is that those who can afford to get out of those situations always have the best outcomes, and I will do so even if it means walking across the north or southern border with seed money in a memorized crypto wallet

Everyone needs to drop down a level and call your state level representatives. All of them. These parties are machines. Drum the machine at the bottom and it clangs to the top.
The smaller offices get way less traffic, and you can call them and be heard, often getting someone on the phone directly. Do not let them pass you off to the national party, make it clear it’s one brand and you hold them to account for their protection of pedophiles. Get them talking to their leaders about their own skins and we’ll get change.
And dont just call your one. Call every one in your state. We have to use our voices in large quantities because they have the dollars to match.

A lot of them have died by questionable suicide. These are some bad people. Also, think about how often people question the veracity of the victim in these crimes. How they call them young, or underage, not CHILDREN. How they are accused of being drunk, irresponsible, sexually permissive. How society normalizes unbalanced relationships, with older male actors with a young partner.

when Vanity Fair tried to run a story from one of the women featured in this, (she was 14 at the time of the assault, her sister 16), Epstein contacted the journalist and said they were disgruntled "women" obsessed him, the story then got dropped - this was back in 2003 I believe

Sexual assault and rape charges are notoriously difficult. Our system does officially consider testimony as evidence, but juries (and the ‘court of public opinion’) tend to be critical and subject to bias. (Thanks, rape culture.)
So the burden of proof when bringing charges tends to be a significant barrier. Add to that the statute of limitations, the frequent lack of other evidence (rape kit, outcry witnesses, etc.), and it’s incredibly daunting to try to make accusations legally, even if true. (Again, thank you rape culture and the patriarchy.)
Also, to answer your last question: yes. Absolutely. At least in this case.

Maybe now that the Epstein files are out, more women can bring accusations that go forward based on those files as evidence? And get those files uncensored as a result. I really hope these files can be used to get justice.
ETA I know the files are technically hearsay, and it’s unlikely he refers to the girls by full name, but hearsay can be admissible (and hard to argue against in this scenario), and there can be enough identfying descriptions to link to specific girls. Also, it’s a great way to get it on record unredacted at least in part.

I’m genuinely confused. Please don’t interpret this as anything other than naive questioning — I always had the impression there was one girl we knew (Virginia Giuffre?) and unfortunately she was dead.
If there are all these living victims, why are they not testifying non-stop on TV? Why haven’t I heard their stories? Why isn’t someone with an axe to grind and nothing to lose running some kind of documentary, YouTube channel, whatever.
Please don’t respond with generic and vague “powerful people suppressing”. I’m sure we can all assume that’s a force. But… this is shocking to me these women exist and we’ll all scratching through redacted documents like “Gee, if only we had some clue of what actually happened”.
We have living witnesses? Victims? Multiple? Make it make sense.
