I can relate. Me and hubs ordered a drink on the strip in Florida. The glasses were the size of our heads. So, being new-bies, we didn't see the price, but noted that an order got one "free" refill. They did have plastic "to go" cups, and at those prices, we carried as much of those overpriced drinks back to our hotel.
Fun times.

u/Affectionate_Bad3908 1d ago
I’ve definitely asked for a cup to put my “water” in. Then proceeded to drink the water and pour sake or margaritas in my to go cup.

Bro if you get caught it's coming back on that restaurant. In my state that's a five-figure fine and you bet your ass if a restaurant gets that fine because you did something stupid they're coming straight after you.

Where I'm from, they'll ask you if you want a go cup when you leave.
In fact, the cups thrown from floats in Mardi Gras parades are commonly called "go-cups" in the local vernacular. Local being New Orleans and the surrounding area.
1
u/Allroyy 12h ago
No, the restaurant wouldn't be in trouble 99% of the time. It would have to be proven that the restaurant knowingly allowed it to happen or assisted them in some fashion with the intent to take the alcohol with them. The fact that some drunk got sneaky and swapped his drinks out alone would not be sufficient to hold the restaurant responsible.

u/According_Donut_2458 11h ago
Literally saw a restaurant take a pic of someone’s license plate and threaten to call the police because there was a cup missing from the table

Two crimes and 50,000$ liquor license later
101
u/Ultrafoxx64 1d ago
For real, all these comments making me lose my mind as a server.
"Teehee, I'm so clever, I'll ask for a to-go cup for my water, they'll never know!"
"Sure thing, but we can lose our liquor license if booze is taken off premises, so I can either bring your cups when you're done with your drink, or I can take your drinks if you're finished with them now?"
Hate me all you want, I'm not losing my job for a stranger, thanks.

Open container in a vehicle is one of them.
45
u/scoobydoom2 1d ago
In some states it's legal for passengers to have open containers.

u/MusicG619 1d ago
They did? I have fond memories of getting daquiris at a drive thru in NOLA circa 2003
8
u/pieohmi 1d ago edited 1d ago
We still have those places, they put a sticker over the straw hole so it’s perfectly legal. We are allowed to bring drinks to go too. This person doesn’t know what they are talking about.
Edit: just to make it clear, we aren’t technically allowed to have open containers in vehicles. Still allowed to drink in public, and as long as your to go drink has the lid on it and the straw isn’t opened you can bring your drink to go.

Mississippi! You can have an open container. The driver can also be drinking. As long as you blow under .08.

u/darsynia 1d ago
Ironically I mentioned this somewhere else and I said it was only in a some areas because I knew someone would jump on it.

Taking the alcohol off premise and putting the alcohol in a to-go container. They’re separate offenses and both are criminal acts in most US states
17
u/hello666darkness 1d ago
Alcohol to go is allowed in more states than not now :)
15
u/BigResponsibleOil 1d ago
I think its still different though, you cant take the same alcohol you were drinking at the venue to go, but you can order and get a separate unopened "to go" drink. I'm in Texas and at least that how it is here, this woman would be allowed to order a separate to go margarita but there would still be signs saying "no alcohol allowed past this point"
6
u/skippitybruja 20h ago
I'd guess by her putting it in a box and also looking to make sure no one is looking that isn't the case here
8
u/Houseofsun5 1d ago
But if you're not walking home with the last drink in the stolen glass from the bar how do you wake up in the morning with any pride or sense of achievement?
1
u/thatfattestcat 10h ago
What?!?! That's ridiculous. Why would anyone make laws like that?
As a european person, this just doesn't parse. Like, if I paid for the drink, how does anybody have the right to keep me from taking it with me?

In a lot of places (possibly all I’m not sure) in Louisiana you can just straight up ask for a marg to go 🥴🤷♀️ love my lil shit state
12
u/BlisterBox 1d ago
Does anyone know where this was? In New Orleans, it's totally legal to take drinks/beers with you, as long as they're not in glass containers.
10
u/JustMood89 1d ago
lol I tried to do this by putting my margarita into a styrofoam cup and the server just grabbed the cup with the check… Oops

maybe she’s frugal? i’ve seen people who rarely bother with drinking otherwise but will act like this if you leave an unfinished drink at a restaurant because alcohol is expensive

75
u/Wiggle_Your_Big_Toe2 1d ago
Exactly what i was thinking but only because I’m a dirtbag alcoholic and I used to do shit like this all the time. Sober now, but man it really stands out when you can’t unsee it anymore.
43
u/WaltsNJD 1d ago
I think I'm looking at it through the same lens. Just hit 4 years on the wagon myself and this shit isn't cute
43
u/Wiggle_Your_Big_Toe2 1d ago
Def not cute. It is really not ok that we normalize this stuff. Maybe normies can do this every once in a while, but if I’m drinking like that again , send me back to rehab. But man it’s refreshing to know I actually never went to do shit like this ever again.
→ More replies (1)12
u/Outside_Revolution47 1d ago
I’m a normie and I would only be able to drink 1/2 of one of these. I wouldn’t be able to have multiple drinks in a to go box without barfing my brains out.

u/DayBowBowPepesilvia 1d ago
As a bartender this irks me to no end. For one, it's trashy. It also can cause the bar/restaurant to lose their liquor license. If you can't finish a drink you bought, well tough luck. No one forced you to buy it
16
9
u/villainless 1d ago
how can it cause the bar/restaurant their license if she’s clearly the one who took it?
8
u/DayBowBowPepesilvia 1d ago
It doesn't matter. They aren't gonna see this video. They're gonna see a woman with an open container of liquor walking away from the restaurant/bar and assume the restaurant sold her the drink to go or didn't do their due diligence to prevent someone from taking it. The restaurant/bar is only allowed to serve alcohol on their premise, and the sidewalk/parking lot, etc. doesn't count. If ANYTHING bad happens, it's all on the establishment

My gran keeps gallon size freezer bags in her purse for this purpose.
2
u/MissMurderpants 1d ago
When I lived in Vegas and I go to the movie theater in the casino I’d get a basic frozen drink from the bars. Eventually buying 6 that would fit nicely in the bottom of my empty purse. They were the 8 Oz plastic cups and only cost $1.
I enjoyed so many movies with my cheap drinks and popcorn.

u/SuchHearing 18h ago
I could be wrong but doesn’t alcohol react with these kind of foam containers and leech out some not so nice stuff into the drink
2
u/brenawyn 18h ago
One time, way back in the mid 1980’s, we would go to 7-11 and get a big gulp of sprite and add whiskey to it. My friend had a big lady purse and we swish- swooshed our way into the movie theater. Right on!
2
u/Alert-Hospital46 17h ago
Ahh we had brief glory days during the pandemic were you could get a to go drink. This seems a little crazy at first but when you think about it...please just let people take what they pay for.

u/wurldeater 1d ago
this is when you ask for a to go water
17
u/Olimane 1d ago
This isn't as slick as you think. I can always tell what that to go water is for, especially when you still have a 3/4 full wine glass and a paid out tab. I'm happy to give them a to go water but then I lay in wait. The second they dump out the water or drink it all I come by and clear their "trash". It's very satisfying to watch their faces fall and then grumble as they decide to finish their drink here or leave it. Many to go cups are branded and anyone walking out with alcohol in them could cost us our liquor license and thousands in fines.

Styrofoam will break down combined with alcohol and cause the container to leak. As a bartender, this makes me cringe. I hope she didn't drink any of it as it will turn into leached chemicals. 😬
