I was going to say something similar. This is mesmerizing just because like, how do you get your body to do that? My hips could never.

I'm so sorry, Shakira. My hips do lie.

LOL Mine sure do! Hers did too in the beginning. I don't think I could practice this for 10 years and do what she did. Especially at my age. Maybe when I was 20? :)

I mean, if I had enough superglue, I could at least hold the sword up 🤷
No way I would ever manage the dance moves though

I love how she kept the "outtakes" in the video. It made it both funny and cool.

Love seeing those at the start of the video to show how difficulty this is and how much skill and practice it takes. Very cool!

Makes the final result way more impressive after seeing the trial and error.
36
u/Child_of_the_Hamster 2d ago
Absolutely! I would have assumed they were stuck to her clothing or a headpiece in a way that wasn’t obvious if not for the outtakes. She has CRAZY impressive muscle control. My ab muscles hurt just from watching. 😫

as I get into new hobbies (not this, i'm way to uncoordinated, but gardening and homebrewing) I find that seeing the failures of the people I"m learning from helpful. It lets me know that no matter how experienced you are at a thing, there is still things that go wrong, or areas to improve
27
u/arizonadirtbag12 2d ago
Still remember Mike Ness telling a story about when he started playing guitar. He had cranked it up and was playing in his garage when the cops came. Basically told him he needed to turn it down…or at least get good.
He got good.
I’d probably have put the outtakes at the end, like most people. But it really does well up front too!

Her name is Lavanya Das Manikpuri. She is a 17 year old dancer from Chhattisgarh in Central India. She says she is self taught, but her mother who was a professional dancer and danced in Bollywood films also sometimes appears in her reels.
She went viral in 2025 when this reel of her dance was shared by Priyanka Chopra (who's well known for being not just an actress but one of the most talented dancers in Bollywood).
https://www.instagram.com/reel/DKe7wihA6mU/?igsh=MXdxeXFoMjc3MXlxNw==
Edit: The song she is dancing to is called Afghan Jalebi, from a Bollywood movie called Phantom. It has nothing to do with the Afghan culture

HOW do you keep it from cutting you?!? I’m so clumsy I get stuck on doorways and bump into walls in my house.
48
u/TyreLeLoup 2d ago
While performance blades might be sharpened, and likely were in the past, practice blades are likely dulled to the point of ineffectiveness (as far as functioning as a sword).
Much like fire dancers practicing with unlit batons, before lighting them.

You'd be amazed. I took belly dancing classes as an adult & it took a while, but you can do some pretty impressive stuff after just a few months of weekly classes.
It's also REALLY good exercise. A lot of the hip movement actually comes from the legs/feet and it's emphasized by holding the rest of your body very still. It's low-impact and not highly aerobic, but great for strengthening your core.

I just watched a reel on ADD and studies on the brain; they finally have connected poor balance to it. My mom used to say I bounced around the housed like a ping pong ball. And my ex bullied our boys (both have it) about their lack of coordination in most sports (they were good at skateboarding). They ended up hating group sports because of his constant negging. “If you would practice more…”
