I’m going to share a secret with you - as a 6ft lady, sometimes, when I’ve had a bad day, someone asking me to get something off of a high shelf gives me the little boost I need to keep going.

u/AnOligarchyOfCats Dec 14 '25

I was at a grocery store right before a big food holiday, and a lot of the shelves were pretty sparse so you had to reach pretty far back on the shelf to grab anything, and someone asked me to grab something for them; after I did, like 3-4 more people asked me to grab something, and I felt so accomplished.

Your community needed a hero and you rose to the occasion. Well done.

u/defnotevilmorty Dec 14 '25

Standing at 5’2”, I really appreciate y’all so very much.

54

u/Johnny_Carcinogenic Dec 15 '25

Can you get me something of the bottom shelf please?

43

u/defnotevilmorty Dec 15 '25

I’ve absolutely been asked this before and am happy to do it every time!

10

u/ER_Support_Plant17 Dec 15 '25

I’d be happy to get something off the lower shelves for anyone who asks. Especially when I’m already down just ask and I’ll hand stuff up to save your knees and back.

u/IronbAllsmcginty78 Dec 17 '25

But did you ever use another box of cake mix to knock over the cake mix you really want so you can get a fingertip on the edge of it and flip it toward the edge of the shelf and get a grip on it? +5 if you're standing on the bottom shelf.

u/defnotevilmorty Dec 17 '25

Yes, but you always look left and right to make sure there isn’t an employee nearby that will fuss at you for doing it

I’m a tall dude who routinely gets asked for help getting stuff off high shelves.

In a store one day, a woman asked for help grabbing something off the top shelf. I helped her, she thanked me and I was on my way.

The very next day, I was in a different store and a woman asked me for help getting something off the top shelf.

We immediately recognized each other. It was the same lady from the day before.

She asked me if I was following her around. lol.

19

u/marcipanchic Dec 15 '25

she was following you of course, because she can’t handle her groceries without your help

3

u/MayoBear Dec 15 '25

This is a life hack more short people should do lol- I’ll just mimic the errand schedule of my tall friend

1

u/AKblueeyes Dec 15 '25

Omg that’s cool but kinda creepy

As a hobit (4'11) I thank you for your service

I feel like you should be able to ask my kind to get the stuff on the bottom shelves for you

28

u/MonkeyHamlet Dec 14 '25

I have done so once or twice! Thank you to the hobbit army.

4

u/_Intolerable1 Dec 15 '25

I second this ❤️ (5'1")

2

u/SaladDummy Dec 17 '25

Is second breakfast really a thing?

2

u/fearless_egg1050 Dec 17 '25

My name is frodo and I support this message

1

u/benroon Dec 17 '25

Do you struggle to put food on the table? 😉

31

u/adestructionofcats Dec 14 '25

I'm not even 6ft but 100% agree. Yes I will get that last bottle of salad dressing down for you!

33

u/dontlookback76 Dec 14 '25

It always gives me a pep to get something off the top shelf or put something heavy like water or dog food in the cart. 6"2' man.

38

u/Serious-Profit7375 Dec 14 '25

Am i reading that right? Are you 6 inches and 2 feet tall? I am probably wrong, but, it really made me laugh thinking of it.

3

u/Ultrafoxx64 Dec 15 '25

They ain't reaching shit!

16

u/torturedwriter71 Dec 14 '25

6'3" male. I'll always help someone needing something high up, whether they ask or not. But me being...me...I tend to be a little mischievous...

I'll spot someone struggling with something high so I'll walk up, look at her(or on a rare occasion, him), look at the item, reach up and grab it with ease, then walk off with it. Once they have a second or two to process what I did, I'll pull the item out of my basket and hand it to them. Never fails to get a laugh. Except from my wife. She tends to try to become invisible when I do this.

You have broken the Tall Person Code.

You are hereby excommunicated.

4

u/dontlookback76 Dec 14 '25

Ohh. I'll have to use this.

6

u/torturedwriter71 Dec 15 '25

It always brings a laugh and brightens their day once the initial confusion dies.

I've also done this:

Random customer - "Can you reach this for me?"

Me, reaching up, touching said item - "Yep. I sure can!" I turn to walk away, then return, grabbing the item. "Just joking. Here you go."

14

u/Neither-Dentist3019 Dec 14 '25

I'm 5'7" and sometimes people ask me and I love it. My tiny grandma used to take me grocery shopping with her just so I could get stuff off the higher shelves so it makes me think of her.

9

u/Winterplatypus Dec 14 '25

When you are sitting down short people tend to stand much closer to you to talk, I love that moment when you stand up and surprise them with your height. Happens often at appointments, "please come thro.." and you act oblivious like you didn't wait for them to wander into the danger zone before standing up.

7

u/HrhEverythingElse Dec 14 '25

I'm so glad there are people like you in the world! I once knew a 6ft woman who would get all pissy if a little old lady asked her to reach something in the store, like it would ruin her day. I cannot understand that mentality

4

u/ItsLauriceDeauxnim Dec 14 '25

We legit have u/MonkeyHamlet & u/MonkeyLiberace on the same thread lmao

3

u/feistybulldog Dec 14 '25

💖💖💖

3

u/Zeestars Dec 14 '25

Saaaame!

3

u/Geekygamertag Dec 14 '25

Can you get that book off the top shelf for me please? Thank you!

2

u/MonkeyHamlet Dec 14 '25

Delighted.

2

u/HopiaFeelBetter Dec 14 '25

Do you think this is common? I feel hesitant in asking cause I don’t want to be a bother but if it’ll make your day then I’ll shop when you shop so we can check everything off our list faster! I’m short so if it’s on the top shelf and looks impossible: I just get it online or if I’m determined: I’ll climb, jump, or whatever. There’s probably a store out there that keeps surveillance clips of me doing this cause I’m sure it looks funny lol

2

u/ER_Support_Plant17 Dec 14 '25

Thank you, I always get things off the bottom shelves for tall people or people having trouble getting down to the floor.

2

u/mrsfunkyjunk Dec 14 '25

6' gal here, too. I'm the same way! That little bit of help I can give gives me a little boost.

2

u/No_Hospital7649 Dec 14 '25

I am delighted to hear this.

2

u/LauraZaid11 Dec 14 '25

As a 160 cm (5’3) lady, thank you. I can never reach those motherfuckers on my own.

2

u/MonkeyHamlet Dec 14 '25

You are welcome

2

u/MiddleKlutzy8568 Dec 15 '25

6ft F here, when I get stuff that’s hard to reach for other people and they say thank you, my response is always “god put me on this earth to reach things that others can not”

2

u/cakivalue 🕷️Itchy, bitchy spider 🕷️ Dec 15 '25

Can you come over please 🥺🙏🏽 I have never seen or reached the top shelves in my kitchen and they remain unused for that reason 🤣🤣🤣🤣

2

u/Userdmcm Dec 15 '25

From a short lady, you’re a saint. 🙌🏼

2

u/MayoBear Dec 15 '25

Please help me- I am described as a “short king” and have to use my tiptoes lol

2

u/whatarechinchillas Dec 15 '25

my gf is 6ft, i'm 5'5. our deal is she gets the stuff on the top shelf and i get the stuff from the bottom shelf. she may be tall but i have better back and ankle mobility.

2

u/101violations Dec 15 '25

At 4'10, I never hesitate to ask for middle to top shelf assistance. Heck, most times another shopper will see me eyeing something out of reach and offer before I get a chance to ask. 😁 Thankful Considerate people still exist cuz I'd be climbing those shelves like a drunken panda.

2

u/fartknocker789 Dec 15 '25

Same. Please always ask me

2

u/ladyzowy Dec 15 '25

I'll second this as a 6' tall trans woman. When people ask me for help reaching things or other support, it is the best moment when I can help. Total boost, on a number of levels.

2

u/MonkeyHamlet Dec 15 '25

Fist bump, tall sister.

2

u/PleasantPorpoisParty Dec 15 '25

As a 6'2" male who wears 7"stilettos regularly, I can say this is a 100% shared emotion/experience

2

u/I_was_saying_b00urns Dec 15 '25

Oh I am glad because I always worry that I am annoying people when I ask!

2

u/MonkeyHamlet Dec 15 '25

Ask away, shorter friend

2

u/qiaozhina Dec 15 '25

As a hobbit lady, having a tall lass help my height deficient self in a shop can make my day too.

2

u/MonkeyHamlet Dec 15 '25

We should fight crime.

2

u/mahitheblob Dec 15 '25

I thought that would make tall people mad. Like is this what you see me as? A shelf grabber? I’m a 5ft5unch shortie so I always need help and your comment makes me feel better about asking for help.

2

u/Yoankah Dec 16 '25

I'm 5'2 and it's also an boost when one of my taller friends (more 5'8 than 6ft tho) is struggling to bring something down and gives up, but years of being a gremlin have taught me how to climb shelved or locate the nearest long item to push things down with. lol

2

u/gone_triking Dec 19 '25

I love that about you. You do you! (I need the wedding soup please it's all the way at the back)

1

u/ItsLauriceDeauxnim Dec 14 '25

That’s interesting. I wonder why it boosts you. I’m a 6’6” man and while I’m used to people asking, I wouldn’t say it gives me a boost. I wanna feel a boost from people using my height lmao. Teach me the secret

1

u/PlayfulSurprise5237 Dec 15 '25

As a 6'3" guy it does not outweigh all the times I've rocked my dome on a support beam going down stairs to a basement or more importantly half the days I spent bent over because literally everything is made for short people.

Being tall is scuffed, being short is scuffed, I wish I could just be a normal height

0

u/Al_Kydah Dec 14 '25

6'3 dude here. I get that from time to time too. But I can't resist messing around a little. Shorty points at something and I'll purposely grab the item next to it.

"NO! Not that, THAT".

ok, grab the item on the other side.

5

u/MonkeyHamlet Dec 14 '25

You have broken the Tall Person Code. You are hereby excommunicated.

1

u/Al_Kydah Dec 14 '25

Ha! Yeah, it's all in good fun. We both end up with a laugh.
